  1. The only problem I had with guns was new guns being.junk. Everything old I bought online has been great. Including blackpowder items. You could ask for more pictures. Typically private owners have been great online. A good rated gun shop should be ok. Pawn shops might be more of a toss up. A bit of.rust inside is not rare. If it's a deep woods gun, it'll be dropped scratched sank in a creek. They get abused. Thanks for the post I forgot to double check my 870 Remington. I fell through ice up in the adirondack's while rabit hunting. Always bring a way to clean the barrel and some wd40. I have those small otis kits.
  2. Randy hunter, You need a used 7600. Go on gunbroker. Best bet. If you live in long island or hunt in dutchess county, why not get an autoloader shotgun then. Buy good lightweight binoculars, good gps, good pack, good boots, and a way to layer clothes. After that a way to keep warm at night, like a woodstove tent. Then upgrade the gun. Maybe add a peep sight to that 30-30. If I'm wandering far and it's warm, I use a Glenfield model 30 with lyman 66 peep sight and fiber optic front sight. Good old 150gr corlokts. If you want a scope, 2nd vote for low power. I bought several bushnell elite firefly model 3200 in 1.25-4.5x32
  3. I don't get the whole deer drag solo thing. I have had deer in over a mile before. I've just quartered them and pack out the meat on a frame pack. Some deer it's one rough trip, or if the terrain is rough, I bring half and hang the other half in a tree. In spits in PA, I've walked maybe 2 miles in. I usually glass well at each hill peak until I get to where I want, then go slow. Anyone boat in from stillwater reservoir or did big moose plains area? Just wondering how crowded it gets. There's a few camp struggling in the stillwater big moose rd area. The lousy winters have dwindled the hunters and snowmobilers, and thus the membership.
  4. Does the gamin text just go to a predetermined phone number, or you can pick on the go? Far as hunting clothes.... What good jacket did you get? Fleece I find is too thin. Typical hunting coat too warm. White over layer camo jacket holds in moisture. A good lead would be great. Also, I'm still looking for a comfortable non sweaty back pack. With the pack, do you bring an extra layer if you get lost? Or do you put an extra layer on when going the slow slow pace. In PA during flintlock season I wear traditional Woolrich mackinaw. That works good, but the density is high enough where cursing for tracks is futile. There's enough around to slow stalk. Are you a pants or bib guy? Amy places you tend to avoid, terrain wise.
  5. That guy doesn't hinge cut he topple the tree roots and all. Smaller maple trees like 6 inch or smaller. How big do the maples get before they don't grow new shoots? Also, when a hinge cutted tree I'd almost dead, can you cut it off lower and regenerate new shoots? My plot work for next year will be planting 100 yellow birch, and pruning them to shrub shapes. If you see any tips on that, please share.
  6. All those maples and no hinge cuts..... Any reason you leave them cut 3 or 4 ft high? Tip them over with the bucket. I know one guy who just pushes trees like that over with a front bucket, uncut......
  7. I judge by what growing there already, if possible. How well it grows. What is growing, and the color of the leaves. My finger nail beds sting in acidic soils when I am pulling roots or working in the soil. Never knew the baking soda trick. I have yet to see a soil that doesn't need some lime. This is in Greene and Columbia county areas. I may and usually test. However, I have yet to find a soil above 6.5ph near me. If it's a real quick plot. I just put a 1/2 ton per acre of lime. What alot of places do not say is the tilling depth. The shallower the till you get, the less lime you should use. Alot of advice is for 6 inches of till out there. With the equipment we use and the rough and rocky places many people do these plots in, you're lucky to get a 3 inch deep till.
  8. People who are against hunting will be attacking squirrel hunters first.... There's no big support organizations like deer, duck, trukey, elk, and pheasant hunting have.
  9. Red squirrel have a stronger nutty flavor. Grey squirrels I bone out the backstraps and shoulder flanks. Red squirrels are considerably smaller. Just grab the rear legs. Look up squirrel cleaning videos on youtube. Squirrel hunters have some big advantages over big game only hunters. Ability to stalk. More time in the woods. More practice shooting in field situations, less of the "buck fever" response to shooting game. Slow cook them in broth, then discard the broth, then cook with what you'd use with the meat. You can brine them before cooking. Either way the gaminess gets soaked into the fluid.
  10. Padre, Tell me more about the Delorme inreach? Does it have a subscription fee. How much. I'm seeing a few for $300 or less. I could live with that. What model do you have? How long do that batteries live? Is there an akaline backup battery module? Does it have a low power mode? Also, Do you hunt with others. How do you find a hunting partner. I know many who hunt, but few who would be into this.
  11. Im pretty good with a topo map and compass. I always remeber an out, like head east to stream, then take stream down to car. Stuff like that. I use topos all the time in the catskills, but have a GPS as backup or for marking interesting features. Like spots to sit for deer, locating rubs, oddball water holes, etc... What else you like in the woods? I have a woodstove tent, but not really portable. It's a USGI 4 man tent, like the ones used in WWII and korea war. It was made in 1993 though. 13ft octogon. If I had a group of 3, I'd set it out back. But, might be getting a lightweight tipi and packable stove soon. Got a nice frame pack. Could use a better day pack. I'm looking for some great hunting clothes for stalking. I got plenty of regular stuff. Just looking for a thick fleece or wool. Columbia and Cabelas have some nice snow camo in wool. Any advice there. I got a browning BLR in 450 marlin with a 1.5x scope. I reload the gun to a milder load. A touch less than 45-70 power levels. Easier on the recoil, which makes a followup shot a touch quicker. Tempted to get a 7600. I am assuming autoloader are frowned upon, due to ice jambing them up. For now, my backup would wither be a remington 870 20ga with iron sights, or my marlin 336 with lyman peep sight.
  12. The NYC watershed lands can be good too. In Ulster or Greene County theyre hard to avoid. They can be your friend when deer hunting. Sometimes they bark when a deer goes by. Was asleep at a vase of a tree. One barked. I woke up and a deer was 40 yards away.
  13. Where would you like to hunt other game. Might as well learn some public land. If you take to upland bird hunting, examining red squirrel spots can help you find grouse spots. They like most conifer trees. Talk to a nysdec biologist or their forester in the region you'd like to visit. They're small and take alot of skill to harvest with a 22. Not extremely difficult, but theyre more restless than a grey squirrel. When they bust you, they don't hide. In fact they scream out their location.
  14. I think it's 6j. I am east of tug hill, near the stillwater reservoir. I travel to work up to st lawrence. Whole different game here. There are differences in the northern tier farm versus forested area. In terrain and the rules show that. DMP allotment ts. In my 6j area, you can not harvest a doe during muzzleloading season. Turkey hunting I think is different too. I hunt on logging compay leased land. The deer numbers are noticeable better. But luck does not come easily. You need to know how to hunt thay area, and you need to know the area as well. So, what wold you change? Compare NY hunting to other areas of the northeast. We have a long tine to hunt. However, many do not hunt past the 2nd weekend of gun season. I generally avoid early rifle season and gladly enjoy later rifle and muzzleloader season. Less pressure, likely snow too.
  15. I like the earlier season. I think it helps bring in money to the northern areas. I think this also saves a few hunters lives by being in warmer weather. And is easier on herds before 18 inches of snow or so makes them travel to yarding areas. My club hammers them when the yarding snow comes. I'll never complain hunting season is too long. I'll let the girlfriend do it.
  16. Yes. Trappers have luck too on livestock farms. Woodchuck too.
  17. Maybe he's a 3 pointer. Antler points that curve in are not considered a point. See nys SB B.S. 8675309 bill for more details.
  18. Why oay. Get your foot on farmland. Orchards and vegetable farmers need small game hunters more than deer hunters. Offer rabbit and squirrel hunting solutions. They'll let ya deer hunt later.....
  19. Is it too early to plant oats or wheat? I have a reclaimed lawn I rototilled in november. My goto plot is wheat oats and clover, but planted on recently logged spots in august. This spot needs more work for the fall, but will add clover if it's doing well and I want to keep it. Could only rototill to 3 inches. Sod was thick and soil was moist. I see temp down to 30 this weekend.
  20. Don't feel obligated to buy an expensive inline. I've seen plenty of bottom end CVA and traditions do 100 yard cloverleafs. I'd buy another t/c omega in stainless steel again, even used. However, I enjoy flintlocks and just use them. My t/c is a loaner gun, or I use it in shotgun only areas. If you live near PA, you can hunt deer in January for $126 a season with an iron sighted flintlock I've seen numerous public spots in PA beat ny private land.
  21. Check your brake balance. Off road vehicles even not do old one get horribly abused with junk and muck in the system. My buddy has a pioneer 1000, but the convertible to a back seat type. He put aftermarket tires on it. It does very well on wrecked up muddy logging trails. Get the awd, a locked axle has a tenDancy to spin around like you did. Awd is better for manueverabilty. 4wd has more ultimate traction. Switch modes is even better. Awd is easier on the tire wear and easier on trail erosion, drive train wear, and lawn wear. On a turn the outside wheels turn faster. Locked axle induce skidding much easier.
  22. Hey..... I use all the power of my 450 marlin lever gun. 85% through the deer and 15% on my eyebrow from the scope. Too stupid to know any other way....
  23. I do have to say not many use tractors to their potential. Lots of 10+ year old tractors with under 200 hours. If you have an atv, you may need a cart or tow behind mower and your good.
  24. Do you have chains all around or just 2 tires. I have a 2003 ze2 blazer I only drive in winter. A 1986 old cutlass gets the played front may to end of october. Was thinking of just getting snow tires. I'm assuming moose river plains is not plowed
  25. O live in the catskills. Thr few public places they log make a huge difference in both small and big game hunting. We have to share the woods with everyone. The more people enjoy public land, the better. Deer and grouse go where hikers avoid. The next generation should be enjoying outdoors however they want to, as long as it's responsible. In PA, you can't camp in SGL property, only forests. I think camping in allowed in all designations, except for specific spots.
