  1. Welcome Jason!! Everybody KNOWS the best slice in Brooklyn in at House of Pizza and Calzone on Union Street in Carroll Gardens!
  2. check out the thread is started about hunting apps thanks!
  3. To the best of my knowledge this proposal for changes to the license regulations has been in the works since well before Sandy Hook and the recent attention to the gun issues in our country. While it's not perfect, it has had the attention of many people across the state from sporting goods makers and retailers to conservation groups. Whats amazing to me is how fast a discussion of practical rule changes that can give us all more time doing what we love to do degenerates into a mud slinging name calling hate fest. I've no love for politicians of any sort but the moment our voices become vitriolic everyone stops listens and we lose our collective voice. I'd say this proposal is a good start but I'll never stop being wary of all the mechanization of government politics and the personal goal and ambitions of politicians. We MUST be the voice of reason, We MUST speak in an intelligent manner and we MUST get out and VOTE! No one ever changed anything by leaving it for others.
  4. I live in Ronkonkoma and have been hiking and hunting Otis Pike a few times this past season. I've seen lots of game of all sorts. Count me in! If you guys check out my other thread on smartphone apps maybe we can test a few while scouting the area. I'm going there this last weekend for a brisk hunt Saturday evening and Sunday Morning gonna try calling a fox. Buzz
  5. I was also told i can set up a tree stand as early as September. The requirement of putting your info on the stand should discourage squatters. From DECs site: http://www.dec.ny.gov/regs/4081.html w. No person shall erect, construct, install, maintain, store, discard or abandon any structure or any other property on State lands or subsequently use such structure or property on State lands, except if the structure or property is authorized by the department or is: 1. a geocache that is labeled with the owner's name and address and installed in a manner that does not disturb the natural conditions of the site or injure a tree; 2. a camping structure or equipment that is placed and used legally pursuant to this Part; 3. a legally placed trap or appurtenance that is placed and used during trapping season; 4. a tree stand or hunting blind that does not injure a tree, is properly marked or tagged with the owner's name and address or valid hunting or fishing license number, and is placed and used during big game season, migratory game bird season, or turkey season; or 5. a wildlife viewing blind or stand that is placed for a duration not to exceed thirty (30) days in one location per calendar year, does not injure a tree, and is properly marked or tagged with the owner's name and address or valid hunting or fishing license number. x. On State lands, no person shall erect, construct, occupy or maintain any structure that is affixed to a tree by nails, screws or other means that injure or damage the tree except as otherwise authorized by the department. y. No person shall erect, construct, maintain, occupy or use any tree stand that is used, operated, accessed or reached by methods or means which injure or damage a tree on State lands, and no person shall gain access to any structure in a tree on State lands by means that injure or damage the tree.
  6. I am currently giving ActInNature Hunting - ActInNature Company ApS the workout. I am using the free version and if i am impressed enough after all the testing I may buy it, The radar map of your immediate area is pretty cool. Unfortunately my test with other hunters is going to be limited. Anyone interested please try it out and lets get some feed back going. We can vett these pretty quickly and have another tool at our disposal. I'll be out for fox at Otis Pike in Suffolk giving some of them a try. Thanks!
  7. Warning: Coyote Sounds - PhotoBeat is trash, it installs a shortcut for something different every time you start it. DELETED! Testing continues... I'm with you guys when it comes to technology in the field, I'll set the phone to reject all calls and texts except from those hunting with me. Knowing how to do that is a help and many aren't aware you can do that with the new breed of phones. Tell us how you use technology when you do use it or have no choice but to use it (wink). For example, when scouting new places Google Earth's 3d modelling is a real help to find hallows and pine thickets. I have a lot of game call apps, i prefer mouth or hand calls over electronic calls but at least they are examples of calls i can learn from and imitate.
  8. This may have been discussed before, It can certainly use updating. With the power and sophistication of the new breed of smartphones, GPS', Tablets and Home PCs there has never been a time with so many tools available to hunters and fisherman of all types. I'd like to know what if any of these tools you're using and how. I'll start off with Devices and Apps I'm using or testing. On my PC Google Earth and the KMZ files available from the NYSDEC have been an amazing source of information. All of which can be accessed on most smartphones. I have the Galaxy S2 (samsung) loaded with these apps, ALL ARE FREE, I aint paying for nuttin i aint tried out before. 9. Done signed that thing! These are the same people who would cringe and cry how can you eat a bunny rabbit. I grew up eating rabbit every Sunday my whole life in my Brooklyn home. The same one's who drove all the live poultry markets out of business, who prefer a meat from some unknown source or huge multinational. ah don't get me started! ...and squirrel hunting is one of the hardest hunting there is.
  10. I agree I'm going to have to work on getting permission on private land but in case the answer is no I'd like to have some sort of back up. ...and speaking of spring gobblers in Suffolk this photo was sent to me by a friend who went out east to wainscot to work today. as cousin Vinny would say " youse gots a turkey season for youts only?"
  11. Ooops! I meant Clayton, NY close but no cigar! sorry
  12. Wow great thread! Up until i had kids exactly 17.4 years ago i was an avid and some would say crazy 4 season backpacker. Here's some of what I've learned. Sleds are a great idea, here's how cross-country ski or snowshoe enthusiasts use them. You need sticks the proper length for your gait you can make them or buy them usually made of nylon plastic that doesn't get too stiff and break in winter but I've seen them made of aluminum and such. These sticks attach to a waist belt putting the pulling effort at your waist and keeping the sled from hitting your ankles on the down hills. A sled will increase your comfort level by allowing you to bring more comforts. Sled shapes vary but a Jon boat shaped sled with plenty of lashing points is what I've found works best. For sheer fun check these guys out: http://www.mountainboysleds.com Tents for winter come in two varieties, the small wind resistant bubble dome types, very tight but not hard to heat and the I can stand up and walk around type which will require a heater. both are expensive and somewhat specialized. My solution was the two person 4 season dome which i mostly use just for me i couldn't stand up but i can spread out. Other than all the other common sense safety issues already mentioned here I want to say pick your tent-mate carefully! Winter camping isn't always easy but I feel with the right company it is never boring and has rewards unique to the season. There is so much more to winter in the woods than just cold. Buzz
  13. I'd like to ask if there is any member(s) here who is a member of the Millerton Gun Club? If so please PM me I'd like to ask you some questions about real estate and the club. Hey TPHunter! Watertown eh? Last time i was there the most spectacular northern lights were on display so much so that all the major papers wrote about how far south they were. I watched them from Grindstone Island a guest of Watertown's more prominent (notorious) citizens. Beautiful place with the Adirondacks at your doorstep!
  14. Hello All! My cousin and I are looking to go on our first spring turkey hunt. I live in Suffolk he lives on Staten Island. Since Suffolk has no spring season for old farts we have decided its going to have to be one of these areas. Sterling Forest State Park Stewart State Park Any of the M.U.A.s along the Taconic Parkway specifically Taconic Hereford, Lafayetteville or Roeliff Jansen (I am at least familiar with these three being an avid hiker.) So if anyone has any information, suggestions or cautions please let me know. If you'd like a hunting partner to help scout any of these areas I'd like to help out. I'm not asking anyone to give up their "favorite fishin hole" Just a little help avoiding revenuers, meth labs and corn stills! Thanks! Buzz
  15. Hello All! I'm an Avid shooter who has gotten back into hunting with my cousin and his son. Looking forward to advice and answers to what may well be stupid questions. Anyone looking for partners to share the load or help scout an area can give me a shout. Thanks! and good hunting! Buzz
