Yeah, lawdwaz is handicapped... All his rifles have the bolts on the wrong side.

Nice perch, Lee ! Some succulent eating there... Sodus ?

Biz...I am sure that the quality bluing job on your Weatherbys helped a lot also... I have had a few cheap firearms over the years, and cheap polishing/bluing jobs rust MUCH more easily than quality firearms... I hunted rabbits quite a bit over the years with a New England Arms single shot .410. It killed bunny rabbits just fine, but the damn thing rusted if I SNEEZED on it..

Yes I am...I don't post much but I have lurked there for years.

On a couple of my wilderness hunts, there was no room for the rifles in the tent during nasty weather..We could put them under a tarp, but they still were wet.. On a two week hunt in Alaska, the only things that I had that were dry were my sleeping bag and ONE pair of socks, which I kept in the tent as my greatest creature comfort.. Prior to that hunt, I had prepared all of the metal surfaces on my rifle with several coats of automotive wax (Turtle Wax) , but I still had some rust after two weeks of being soaked every day. Still today the bluing looks fine,,What light rust that occurred cleaned off very easily...To see the rifle right now you would not suspect that it has led as hard of a life as it really has.

I haven't seen the one in Gainesville, but the one standing in the Anchorage Airport Terminal certainly lets you know that when you arrive there, you are no longer at the TOP of the food chain. I've seen some big ones on the hoof while hunting in Alaska.. Even the medium sized ones were impressive...Defintely an animal to respect...I would just as soon go my way and them go their way... -

MOST of the guys who shoot big bears with archery tackle are nonresidents and therefore have to hire a guide in either Alaska or the Canadian Provinces to hunt grizzly/brown bears and also polar bears. That means that while they are shooting the bear with thier bow they have a guy with icewater in his veins and a rifle with a bore as big as your thumb standing beside them, and frequently the guide has to finish the job to keep the bear from either escaping, or ,often from charging in and killing the silly son of a bitch that just shot him with an arrow. Fred Bear had to shoot several polar bears with his bow before he could enter one in the record books, because his guides had to keep killing the damn things with a rifle to prevent them from shredding Fred's skinny, plaid clad ass. Anyone who takes on a grizzly, brown or polar bear with a bow WITHOUT backup of a heavy rifle has a death wish, IMHO... -

I'd like to post an analogy, but since this is a family forum, I'll decline... Just picture a beagle having a meaningful relationship with a German Shepard..<<GRIN>>.... Of course, I'M the beagle... -

Sense of adventure ? Guess I'm just a pussy that way.. I never had the urge to hunt something that might tear me to shreds or trample me into the dust if I happen to screw up my shot placement. I also don't skydive, jump motorcycles across canyons, or play with highly venomous snakes... -
Thanks, Wooly...Due to a different existing medical condition, I have a thorough blood work screening at least twice a year. If I drop dead tomorrow morning, I'll be sure not to blame YOU..<<grin>... COMING NEXT WEEK : Pygmy's Home Remedy BRAIN SURGERY tips.....

I readily agree that stainless/synthetic has advantages in wet weather. I have been on several extended wilderness hunting trips when my blued/wood stock rifle was soaked daily with no good way to clean it up or dry it, and yes, the wood did swell and I had some surface rust to deal with. I never noticed any shifting of zero, but perhaps I was just lucky. All that said, asthetics are important to me regarding my firearms and I really prefer the look and feel of wood stocks and blued steel over stainless/synthetic. In day to day hunting when I have the means to clean up and dry my firearms every day after use, it is much less of an issue. I don't care for the looks and feel of stainless steel and sythetic stocks. I'll continue to enjoy my walnut and bright blue steel, thanks you ! Some guys like blondes, some prefer brunettes, and some have no preference, as long as they FUNCTION properly.. I lean toward the brunettes, myself..<<grin>>...

I have tried bananas and it didn't help..Perhaps I didn't eat enough of them

Keuka is completely frozen over and the guys have been hammering the lakers jigging through the ice. I hope to get over and give it a try sometime this week. I have caught hundreds of lakers vertical jigging in open water, but I've never caught a trout of ANY species through the ice.

Good idea Doc.. My fishing gear could certainly use some organizing. I have been working on a fishing related activity, though. I tie my own hair jigs and I have been tying up a supply of the ones I use most, 1/16 oz. and 1/8oz. brown and black. I have my tying vise set up right beside my computer and I have perhaps a 2 or 3 year supply tied up so far.

As I get older, I have more and more problems with leg cramps..Many times I have scrambled out of bed to get weight on a leg to relieve a calf or thigh muscle that has knotted up. A friend of mine told me to relieve the cramps, swallow a teaspoon full of regular yellow mustard .. I tried it and it WORKS.. I have not used it as a preventative, mostly because I really don't even LIKE the stuff, but it sure works to end the cramps when they have started. I have since read some stuff online about it.. No one seems to know for sure WHY it works, but it sure does relieve cramps, usually within a couple of minutes after swallowing it.

The Stevens 555 is reviewed in the March issue of American Rifleman. They gave it a favorable review.. The test gun had a surprisingly nice piece of Turkish walnut in the stock..I also like the fact that the gun is adonized/blued rather than tacky looking stainless. The auther didn't mention the doubling issue..

I've spent some time around grizzlies and brown bears..I never had the urge to open hostilities with one, unless he was trying to eat me. Those things just LOOK like bad news. Many bear guides consider the .300 mags as minimum for big bears. For sure, if I were hunting them with a .300 mag I would want to use a heavy, stoutly constructed bullet.. I'd much RATHER have a .338, a .375, or my 9.3 x 62..
