Shooting a barrel threaded for choke tubes WITHOUT a choke in it is a definite no-no. Perhaps you got lucky and did not damage the threads. At the very least I expect you will have to clean the lead out of the threads to screw in a choke tube. Good luck..

Hehehehehe...I went through all of this with my daughter about 20 years ago, and my wallet STILL hurts !!! Good luck to you all...

Yeah...I'm just happy to see them go to a good home. Nothing wrong with them..It's just that I can't fit my fat ass into them anymore.

Pretty cool pictures just the same, Wooly. That little feller reminds me of MYSELF when I was younger...

I have a Pennsylvania Tuxedo to give away. Red checkered Woolrich coat, size 40, and matching pants, size 34. Both are in good to very good used condition. Face to face within in the Addison/Corning area, or I will ship and you pay shipping.

Any Axe or Hatchet Aficionados?
Pygmy replied to NeverSeenNorHeard's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
I checked my hacthets and actually I have three. The one I use the most is a Boy Scouts of America Genuine Plumb. It is in good shape and has the original handle. The other two are a Collins and a Dunlap. All are quality American made tools, but the BSA Plumb appears the most valuable..Perhaps I should clean it up and retire it and use one of the others. -
Any Axe or Hatchet Aficionados?

You have got me thinking, NSNH... I have a couple of hatchets and have never checked them for MFG marks or whatever. One of them looks a lot like the Husqvarna hatchet that Lawdwaz posted..I have used it for a lot of little chores, like chopping off heads, wings and feet when butchering poultry and small game and various other chores. I'll have to check them out for markings.. I think I got them both at yard sales. -

I know nothing of such things, but it sounds like a worthy endeavor. Good luck, Pilgrim ! May you fare well. -
Geeeze, the way you guys describe it, it kind of reminds me of a good.......Ummmm.....errrr..... Never mind.....

Nice bows, skillet ! Glad to see your boy got a nice one... I didn't fish opening day..Too cold for me.. Getting to be a wuss in my old age. However, I did fish Thursday morning and got 4 wild/holdover browns, including a beautiful 19 1/2 inch male. I released 3 but kept the biggest one because he was hooked deep. One of the unfortunate hazards of fishing bait. I had another big brown break me off...My own fault..I considered retying after catching the big one, but felt the line and felt no nicks, so I let it go. Sure enough, I hooked another big one in the next hole and he broke my 6 lb. test just above the hook... Dumb rookie mistake..You'd think I hadn't been DOING this stuff for 60 years....<<blush>>..

Quite true, Wildcat, but the same thing could be said about a 30-06 with good 200 grain handloads. When I think heavy medium caliber bullets, I'm thinking .338 or .358 or .366 or .375 with 250 grain or heavier bullets.

" Wood stock and blued steel"....Gives me goosebumps...<<SIGH>>... I love you, Man....You are hereby formally invited to go out and get drunk and pick up chicks with me and a select few from this forum... Borngeechee can be our DD since he doesn't drink.. Nice batttery you have there, despite the overlap...Who cares if there is some overlap ? Actually, with light bullets the 25-06 makes a dandy long range varmint rig, unless pelt damage is an issue. All you need now is a medium bore, heavy bullet thumper, in case you need to stop a grizzly or take a ranging shot on a heavy animal like an elk or a moose.

I don't know how it is out that way, but everything here in Steuben County is pretty much blown out..High and muddy. It will be a couple days before they are fishable. You can check the USGS stream flows for the waters you fish..It will tell you the flow on selected streams.

Happy Birthday ! I hope you both get lucky, but not together ! <<wink>>....

I'll bet they didn't let you keep it, did they ? Probably " Officer Ferdip" has it in his private collection right now...hehehe.

I have two guns that I use often for turkeys. Which one I grab when I go out the door sometimes depends on a whim or my mood. Both are efficient turkey killers One is a Rem 11-87 SP 3" 12 gauge with treebark camo, a 21" barrel and a Kick's .665 Gobblin Thunder choke tube. Currently it wears a Leupold 1x4x20 scope on a cantilever mount. The other one is a Rem 1100 3" 12 gauge with a fixed choke 26" full vent rib barrel. Sights are a front bead and a mid bead. Currently I am using Win XX 2 oz. # 6 turkey loads in both guns. I have previously used Win XX and Fed premiums in both #5 and # 4 with good results. I bought a box of Win Longbeards this year to try on the patterning board.

Nice find, good buddy !! I had begun to wonder if you had given up shed hunting for more productive, like chasing wild women....

Locator Calls for St Lawrence Valley Turkeys
Pygmy replied to wildcat junkie's topic in Turkey Hunting
The barred owl call works well wherever barred owls are common. However, I've hunted areas where barred owls were absent or scarce, and they don't work as well there...Crows are everywhere...My go to locator call is a LOUD, open reed crow call... Having said that, I don't use locators too often, pfrefeering as reeltime said to let nature take it's course... The times I DO use them is to try to get a gobbler to reveal his location if I decide to move on him, or as a last resort to entice a gobble before I move to another location. -
Biz...I agree that the Weatherby mags excell at shooting flat at long range...That is what they are designed for... However, in order to do that they burn a LOT of powder compared to conventional chamberings and the ammo costs a LOT of money, especially if you are not a handloader. They just are not as practical a choice as a hunting rifle for Joe Average Hunter as perhaps, a .270 win or a 30-06, and for MOST hunters the long range advantages that they offer are not necessary.
-
That has been my philosphy, Culver. I once won a Ruger M77 MkII .270 on a raffle ticket. My main hunting rig then was my M70 .280. The two chamberings are very redundant, with the .280 having a slight advantage in bullet selection ( if you are a handloader). This was before rifles were made legal for deer here western NY, but pistols WERE legal, and I did not own a long range pistol. SOOO, I sold the Ruger NIB and used the $$$ to purchase a Rem XP-100 in .260 Rem. That Ruger was the only rifle that I ever owned that I never fired.

I was just being a smartass, Dom...<< blush >>... To be honest, I really don't know, but I have never heard of it being illegal, although I have never used it for trout or even SEEN it used for trout in NY. I used to use it as carp bait. I know it is quite popular in Virginia as trout bait, as evidenced by the empty corn cans that the rednecks discarded along the creek bank while they were fishing.
-
Common corn is legal anywhere that doesn't specify fly fishing only or artificial lures. However, the evil "assault corn" has been restricted under the "safe fishing" act and can only be possessed on a trout stream if it is registered, and then only in quantities of 5 kernels or less.

I saw a flock of perhaps 30 yesterday afternoon just noth of Addison, feeding in corn stubble. This morning at coffee, one of the Mermaid's neighbors said there were birds gobbling up a storm across the road from his house this morning.. They are probably gobbling right NOW, since it is thundering out there..
