  1. Proper name, white fronted geese.. Common name, specs, or specklebellies.. When I hunted ducks and geese in Texas a few years back, the specs were common.. They were easier to decoy than the damn high flying snows and blues. They are also reputed to be the best EATING geese.. I gave mine away and never got to try it, so I can't personally confirm that.
  2. Very cool Zem...Thanks for sharing... Can you IMAGINE making a functional, quality firearm for less than Ten bucks...??
  3. I WAS being serious... My Uncle Jethro caught Chirpes after having an intimate relationship with a chicken.. He woke up one morning with FEATHERS growing out of his butt..HORRIBLE disease... True story... Honest...No kiddin'... Oh by the way ,COOL on the double bands...
  4. There's a venereal disease that you can catch from birds. It's called Chirpes...Be careful... Be sure to wear a condom whenever handling any of our feathered friends.
  5. Glad to hear you are meeting your goals, Growie.. Jamie Lee Curtis...EAT YOUR HEART OUT !!...<<smile>>...
  6. " Hitting the sauce" always meant booze to me, too.. I don't know nothing about no stinking steroids !!! Except the prednisone I took for a couple of gout attacks..That stuff worked GREAT. Knocked out the gout like nothing else.
  7. Speaking of the GOOD ol' days.... Do they make that juice in flavors like " Acapulco Gold", or " Panama Red "..?.. " Don't Bogart that JOINT mah friend...Pass it over to MEEE" ...hehehehe...
  8. Congratulations to your son for his accomplishment !! Congrats to you too, Dad..I'm sure your support had something to do with his success also. You both deserve to be proud !

    Beaver

Beavers never cease to amaze me.. I was fishing one time on Keuka Lake outlet at Dresden, where it flows into Seneca Lake.. My partner and I walked past a cottonwood that the beavers had dropped, a tree that must have been nearly 3 feet in diameter.. My buddy, who tends to be prone to understatement, stopped, looked at the tree and then said... " The SOB must have been out of his MIND !!"....
  10. Hmmmmm... Nothing here yet down along the Pennsyltucky border... You all keep it up NORTH of here if you can....
  11. Actually, " It's So Fluffy" reminds me of one of my old girlfriends... They don't happen to have a " Tuna at Dawn" flavor do they..??
  12. " Buttery Nuts" sounds interesting... I'll pass on the " Fruit Hoops".....Not that there's anyhting WRONG with that....
  13. Larry, you have me drooling all over my keyboard looking at that sandwich.. TAKE me there, next time I come up !!
  14. I used a .17 HMR as my primary squirrel rifle for a couple of years. It was very accurate and flat shooting, but as Elmo has said, meat damage was excessive. I now use the Mach II, which shoots essentially as flat as the HMR out to 100 yards and is much easier on the eating meat. I also often use the .22 LR in my old ( late 60s vintage) Ruger 10/22, which is currently set up with a peep sight and a Wiliams Firesight fiberoptic bead.
  15. Buck does a nice job.. I have one fixed blade that included lifetime free sharpening with the warranty. I send it in every year and it comes back sharp as a razor. My only expense is paying to have it shipped to the factory. They pay the return shipping. I have never sent my 110 ..I received it as a Christmas present in 1971, and I retired it a few years ago for sentimental reasons..I have enough other knives to use that I don't want to risk losing the old 110.. I can see the blade on yours is honed down considerably..Mine is the same way. Lots of memories with that knife.
  16. Glad that nobody was hurt, my friend !!! Scary stuff !!
  17. It is relatively common in Maine and parts of Canada to bring moose out whole...Often it requires hiring a logskidder, but many moose are killed close enough to woods/logging roads so that they can be winched to a vehicle with a long cable. When I shot my bull in New Brunswick, my friend, who is a dairy farmer ( and licensed guide) sent for his hired man with a huge 4WD tractor...The guy drove across a clearcut, going over and around stumps and downed timber, hooked a chain to the moose and dragged him out to a logging road. He then picked up the moose with front end loader on the tractor and set him in the bed of a pickup truck.. Having previously done three bulls in Alaska the HARD way, I thought that was pretty cool.
  18. From this discussion , I have decided that I am an expert at farting. However, even with all of my experience and expertise, on occasion I have a "mishap"... OOPS !! Another pair of jockey shorts bites the dust....<<sigh>>... Life is indeed a continuous learning experience...
  19. Just last spring when I was gobbler hunting on The Mermaid's property I was right in the middle of 3 or 4 barred owls just going crazy with the hooting, barking, laughing , "monkey calling", or whatever....I wish I could have recorded it..It was wild....Sounded like I was in a Tarzan movie... Damn gobblers weren't impressed ,tho..They never said a thing....
  20. Very nice picture of a barred owl, Wooly... I have had them follow me around the woods when I was trolling for turkeys...Walking around, stopping and calling, hoping for an answer. They also respond very well to barred owl hoots, even at noon...In fact one of my hunting partners ( former NYS Owl Hooting Champion) claims they are easier to call in at mid day than at dusk and dawn, because in low light hours they are busy hunting, rather than socializing with other owls.
  21. Wooly...I have a photo of a screech owl.. The little bugger was sitting in the road in front of my truck..I got out and walked right up to him...He didn't appear injured, so I took a couple of pictures of him and then gently nudged his butt with the toe of my shoe..He flew away, apparently healthy. If I can find the picture, I'll PM you and send it to you..Perhaps you can reproduce it and post it here.
  22. Pygmy owls would be very unlikely here in the east.. Good chance it was a saw-whet..They are quite common here, but like cuckoos, heard much more often than seen. Screech owls aren't very big either, and they are very common. Short ears are cool... Most folks would think they are hawks when they see them flying low mousing over weed fields just before dark. This is SUMMER to them..They live and breed in the far north and only visit here in the winter, same as rough legged hawks.
  23. If weight is an issue, consider one of the low end bolt actions. The Ruger American in .308 is lighter than most single shots, under 6.5 pounds. Hesselson's in Elmira Heights has them on sale this week for $250.
  24. Nice video... You're supposed to shoot 'em a couple miles back in the muskeg..The butchering is the EASY part.... The FUN part is packing them....<<SMILE>>.... Nice bull...Good job...
