Hey Pistol..Did you vote for Nixon ? " I want to make myself PERFECTLY CLEAR "....LOL...

Any experienced moose hunter will tell you to keep shooting as long as the moose is on his feet. Better to chance ruining a little meat than to run the risk of losing the animal after he is hit.

Stripper clips have been the standard way to load military firearms since the late 1800s. Even with rifles such as the Brit Lee-Enfields, which has a detachable 10 shot mag, the mag was left on the rifle when empty and was reloaded with 2 5 shot stripper clips. US troops learned the superiority of the clip-fed system during the Spanish American War. Our troops , armed with Krag rifles( which was not a clip fed design) were seriously outgunned by Spanish troops armed with clip fed Mausers. We learned from the experience and shortly after the turn of the century our armed forces adopted the 1903 Springfield which is a modified Mauser and uses 5 shot stripper clips. And THAT is Pygmy's History Lesson for today..<<smile>>...

I went up on the hill yesterday and checked my 2 acre brassica plot.. The snow is all gone..The entire plot looks like a barnyard, riddled with deer tracks and droppings.. The rape is long gone...After the rape, they went after the turnips. Although they have eaten a lot of them, there are still enough there to present a sigificant food source. Last but not least, they have started eating the radishes in earnest. There are chunks of turnips and radishes all over but still plenty of untouched roots. I checked my winter oats/clover also. The oats are all brown and dead, but there is still green clover in the patches where the ground is bare.. They don't to be eating the clover much at this point, preferring to walk over it and get to the turnips and radishes. Add that to the fact that there was a good acorn crop in the adjacent woods, I'd say that SO FAR, the deer on the property have had pretty good vittles.

Moose aren't all that hard to kill, but sometimes it takes them a while to REALIZE that they are dead...<<grin>>..

Given the min and max for the H4350, I would load 4 rounds each of 39.0, 40.0 and 41.0. I shoot 4 shot groups when working up loads..Allowing 1 shot per group that I might pull, or whatever. Then I look for a trend...Groups expanding or reducing.. If groups are getting smaller with increase, I work up a grain at a time. If none of the groups are acceptable, I'll generally try another bullet or another powder. With case capacities of 40 grains or more I don't generally mess with 1/2 grain increments..That is for fine tuning. Of course, with smaller case capacities like some of the .22 or .17 centerfires, a half grain ( or less) would be much more relevant.

This is from my Hodgdon manual, No. 26. .243 with 100 grain bullets IMR 4350 starting load 39.0 grains Max load 42.0 grains H 4350 starting load 39.0 grains Max load 43.0 grains

Shawn..I just did some more research... Opinon seems to vary some...Some guys interchange them, and some say that they are SIMILAR , but not interchangable. H4350 is slightly slower burning than IMR 4350. Most people feel that it would be safe to interchange STARTING loads, but to use caution with higher end loads. There is a bunch of discussion on the net..Google up " are IMR4350 and H4350 interchangable" and check them out and you can come to your own conclusions. Good luck .
-
I don't for the .243 , but as far as 4350 goes, I have read that IMR 4350 and H4350 are interchangable, unlike some other granulations such as 4831. As always, start low and work up carefully.

It seems like many of the posters feel that it is fine to enjoy HUNTING deer, but it is somehow not as acceptable to enjoy KILLING deer... That video looked like FUN to me.. I enjoy pulling the trigger, but have never had an opportunity to be in the situation of having that many tags and that many targets. Besides...I prefer not to shoot fawns( personal preference) and to sort the kids from the adults in a situation like this takes some time.. That's just me. Could I or many other posters on this forum execute the same thing, given the opportunity ? Hell YES...!!.. Put me there with my 1100 and give me 4 tags and I'll give you 4 dead deer every day of the week. I am sure that there are many experienced hunters on this forum that could do the same. Basically, it was 4 easy shots...3 were stationary ( or nearly so) and one was running, but it was CLOSE... Whether you like the OP or not, saying that he was taking questionable shots is pure BS.

I got mine ( Steuben Co) just today. They have 4-6' apple and pear trees for $18-$19. Is that a good price ? Has anyone had any experience with the " Blake's Pride" pear ?

I'll bet they'll eat the mush, Growie.. More than once I have seen them happily eating mushy, brown, half rotten frozen apples like they were candy. I'll have to take a walk and check out my turnip/radish plot and see what's going on up there.

Let me start out by saying that I am a reloader. My .280 has never fired a factory load. Handloading makes nearly every chambering more versatile regarding bullet weights. It is a 7mm and takes the same bullets as a 7mm08 or a 7MM Remington mag. Bullets are available from 100 grains to 175 grains to handle anything from woodchucks to moose. .270 bullets are generally available from 100 to 160grains. Factory loads are more limited for the .280, but in a quick check in the Natchez catalog I quickly found factory loads from 139 grains to 175 grains. There are lots of .270 factory loads out there in 130, 140, and 150 grain weights. As far as performance in the field goes, the .270 and .280 with equal bullet weights are so close that it is not even worth arguing. If you want to split hairs, the .280 has marginally more velocity with equal bullet weights. I bought the .280 because I wanted to have something that was efficient, versatile, and a little DIFFERENT.. Every Tom, Dick and Harry has a .270 or a 30-06. If I were not a handloader, I probably would buy the .270, simply for the reason of ammo availability. As far performance on game goes, you could all your life with a .270 and a .280 side by side and neither you nor the game animals you kill would ever know the difference. -

I remember back when I was into collecting military battle rifles..I'd get into a shop where there were HUNDREDS of them and nearly have an orgasm. It works the other way too though..I got to a point where I just had TOO many guns..Some of them I hadn't used in years and had no good place to display them , so I sold a bunch... Some of them I don't miss, but there are several that I wish I hadn't parted with, mostly for sentimental reasons.
