  1. Don't worry, JB... At my age my "small nub of a hammer" wouldn't impress anyone....
  2. I like the option of being able to use the handgun single action if I want, for the reasons Culver mentioned.. Smith makes ( or DID make at one time) a model that is hammerless but has a small nub of a hammer that would not hang up , but you could still cock the revolver for a single action shot. I can't recall the model without doing some searching.. If I did not intend to CC the gun, I'd definitely go with an exposed hammer.
  3. Yeah, sure, Lawdwaz... They laughed at Fig Newton too, when he invented gravity... You traditionalists naysay EVERYTHING modern....<<sigh>>.....
  4. But wait a minute, Elmo... I AM a grumpy old man...No argument there...<< grin>>...OOPS...I mean ...<<FROWN>>....
  5. NAAAAAW... Long range rig like that might even handle a Leupold 6X ( my .280 wears one) and 165 Remington Bronze Points.... <<< GRIN>>>....
  6. And now you're going to put put some big, horrendous , high power variable, bulbous objective scope on it.... I'm going to go snuggle up with my sleek and graceful blued, walnut stocked sporter with it's 4X Leupold... Poor Jack O'Connor is rolling over in his grave...<<sigh>>...
  7. LOL...!! I was going to call you a RACIST, too... I wonder what THAT might inspire for dinner ?? Nope, better not GO there...hehehehe... I'm making homemade turkey noodle soup. That shouldn't offend ANYONE, except maybe the Turks.
  8. I thought I was going to see a picture of an OWL.... Nice shots just the same, Larry...
  9. I'm an admirer of the .260 Rem and it's ballistic twin, the 6.5 x 55 (6.5 Swede).. What makes the 7MM08 a better choice is the fact it offers FAR more options for rifle choice and ammo. Not too many choices out there for the .260 or Swede... They are both sweet calibers, though, and performance on game is very similar to the 7MM08. I have had personal experience with the .260..I had one in a Rem XP100 pistol and killed half a dozen deer with it.
  10. Hehehehe..The .257 WBY ain't no GIRLY caliber... It's like a 25-06 on STEROIDS... Probably one of the best LONG RANGE deer and antelope chamberings out there. However, there is a price to pay for that performance..It needs a 26" barrel and it burns a lot of powder. It's also chambered in expensive rifles that simply DRIP with snob appeal. If you are into long range riflery ( over 400 yards) that is it's specialty, along with all the rest of the Weatherby mags. For most of us, hunting at normal ranges where most of us shoot game, there are many less expensive, more efficient, and practical options.
  11. There's nothing wrong with a .243 for deer sized game IF you use bullets designed for big game rather than varmints. Generally suitable bullets for deer are from 85 to 100 grains. The 30-30 is has been killing deer for over 100 years at woods ranges , probably 200 yards max. However MOST rifles offered in this caliber are lever action carbines, and the triggers are generally not as good as modern bolt action rifles. All things considered, probably the best choice is the 7MM08. Mild recoil, flat shooting, enough bullet weight for adequate penetration at any angle and a readily available selection of factory loads. There are many servicable, accurate , moderately priced bolt actions available in this caliber. The next category of chamberings, such as the .270, .280, .308 and 30-06 have noticably more recoil and muzzle blast than the 7MM08 while delivering similar terminal performance on deer sized game.
  12. DANG..!! That would be more fun than being dropped off in a Mexican cathouse with a washtub full of quarters !! MAUDIE..!!..Sell my CLOTHES, I'm goin' to HEAVEN..!!...
  13. I have the Smith 637, which replaced an Interarms Firestar compact .45 as my CC piece.. Less firepower, but lighter and easier to conceal. I think the older Colt snubbies such as the Cobra or Detective Special are the EPITOME of cool, as far as snubbies go. Another one which I covet is the Smith M12 Airweight..It is a K frame, so it's a little larger than the J frames, but is a classic carry revolver.. I happen to know where there IS one, but it would be somewhat "complicated" for me to obtain it...Nuff Sed....hehehe...
  14. This is getting WAAAAAY too complicated for this old fat country boy... I'm mostly interested in getting loads that I can put in my rifles and KILL stuff with..
  15. Hmmm... Some lucky coon-ass down across the bayou probably got himself a nice buck AND a new rifle... Maybe it was one a them gator catching swamp people...
  16. I've seen some videos of them shooting pigs from helicopters in Texas, both with rifles and with buckshot.. It looks to me like more fun than I've ever had with my clothes on. Controlling wolves by aerial shooting from light airplanes has also been used in Alaska at times, much to the despair of the Greenpeace types.. It's effective at wiping out entire packs. Helicopter shooting might be somewhat less effective in parts of NY where the pigs have access to dense overhead cover.
  17. Did you shoot that M70 yet ? We rifle loonies are waiting for a report...
  18. Don't get me started..I was married to a teacher for 35 years and had the unfortunate experience of getting to know some of her liberal academic type friends... I don't want to categorize people, but many of them seemed to feel they were much superior to us commoners... The sad part is, while these people seemed to think they were much smarter than most of the rest of us mere mortals, many of them are really not very bright, and they are teaching and influencing our children.
  19. Congrats and glad that everyone is doing fine !!
