Honestly my wife has never complained about me going hunting. Since marriage and kids I have voluntarily cut back on the amount of time I spend hunting. I don't hunt a fraction of what I used to and I am fine with it. That is the proper and responsible thing to do in my opinion. Life is not all about hunting and family should come first.

Not a hockey fan here, but having the best record during a hockey season and maybe $4 might buy me a hotdog and that's about it. What good is the best record when 18 out of the 30 teams make the playoffs? I guess the real season starts now, anything prior to now was sort of a long winter training. The 6 month season is officially over and now starts almost 3 months of playoffs! So funny! LOL

Provide an atmosphere for learning and not necessarily to teach?? Is that why they are charging $40K per year on the average, only to provide a learning atmosphere?? Hell, I can set up a real nice room for my kid where they could do some learning for a lot less. I agree that it's up to the student to learn, but for the money these colleges are getting these days, one should expect a little more than an aromatic atmosphere. A good teacher can go a LONG way in motivating students. If teaching wasn't important then why even need professors? Might as well just show everyone videos of the subject matter and be done with it. Not having to pay live professors should surely bring tuition down also. I know that it can be tough without a college degree, but these colleges are becoming quite a racket. I think where they fail miserably is hooking up students with potential employers when the student is getting close to graduation. In most cases they could give a crap about you once they got all your money. They need to do a lot more in helping students find jobs and internships. I think a student coughing up $160K or more in the 4 years would deserve at least some assistance. And it should be for all students, not only the ones in the top 1% in GPA.

Come on guys, Deerthug was talking about his daughter in this thread. I don't think he ever envisioned her "working on the railroad" or growing up to be a boilermaker, roofer or sheetmetal worker. Not that there is anything wrong with these other jobs, but I don't think a lot of fathers ever pictured their daughters working in such trades. I think a guy can get away without going to college if he has good skills in a trade. He can surely make good money in many trades. For females however, I really do think college is VERY important these days. If some think making $40K within 5 years of college graduation is sad, just think what the average female without a college education will be making?? Not a pretty picture, that's for sure.

Queens, Brooklyn, and Baruch colleges all have very good reputations. They are part of CUNY. For around $7K per year without room and board, you surely can't beat them.

Grow, I wasn't saying you were contradicting me. I just think it doesn't make sense for someone living close to NYC to go to a school upstate for numerous reasons, when there are a slew of schools in the NYC area to choose from. Living close to family is NEVER a bad thing from my perspective, be it when a kid attends college or when the kid turns 55 and it's the parents turn to be helped and looked after by the kid. I know American society is a mobile one, but I sure as hell would love to have my kids and possible grandkids close by when I am getting old and feeble and need some help. If they live across the country somewhere, you will not have such comforts, I can assure you. Maybe this is a selfish thought on my part, but I know that it was very gratifying for me (and my father) that I was there everyday for him when he was on his death bed, and I want to be there for my mother when it's her turn. I think some of us just take family bonds more seriously than others, so that's probably where our disconnect is on our philosophies here.
-
I think having your kid attending a college 20 minutes away makes a parent way MORE aware of what's going on with their child in college, then having them be a 7 hours drive away. A lot of kids take full advantage of these new freedoms they get being in a school far away from home, and many can't handle it and start screwing up like they never did before. Going off to college doesn't mean a parent should not have a say or still have some authority over the kid whose college education they are paying for. Authority is not a bad thing. Those who respect authority and know who the boss is usually end up as the more disciplined and productive people in the long run, so in my view having some parental authority close by while the kid attends college can't hurt.
-
I think there are numerous advantages to not go far away from home to attend college. Many times kids leave to go to college and then they end up working and living elsewhere for the rest of their lives. I know most parents would surely prefer their kids to stay closer to home than live somewhere far away where you only might get to see them on holidays and special occasions. I would agree with First-light that St. Johns is probably overrated, but what school isn't these days? Absolutely NONE of them are worth the money they want, that's for damned sure. If your daughter is being offered a good deal by St. Johns she absolutely should go for it. Can't beat it, plus the advantages of not being too far away from home and having to travel for hours just to come back home for a weekend. Believe me, being close to home will benefit both the parents and the kid. The kid may not realize it at this point, but they probably will somewhere down the road. NYC is also the center of the world. Like the song says, if you can make it there, you can make it ANYWHERE. If she can get the education here and then have job opportunities once she is done, why go elsewhere where there will surely be less opportunities?? My .02.

What do sales have to do with being smart? iphones are bought by a lot people too, but I'd bet all of the buyers aren't the sharpest knives in the drawer. The word "platform" itself here has got to be a creation of the AR crowd. Never heard this term used for guns before AR's became the rage. Not like the you could attach a kitchen sink to the old Mausers and Enfields that those hip hunters brought to deer camp for the first time in the old days. Maybe a bayonet to finish off that buck with, but that's about it! LOL

Come on now guys, you are trying to tear Stubby apart for his comments, when there definitely is truth to the points he is trying to make. I sure as hell see his point. If you guys think that there aren't a good many fellow gun owners who don't see eye to eye with you on AR guns, you would be terribly mistaken. Because there most certainly are. Of course these people are viewed as stupid and traitors in the eyes of the AR supporters, but you can't deny people their opinions so you will just have to live with it whether you like these opinions or not. All I can tell you guys is that AR owners surely aren't getting much support from the non-gunowning segment of society, and if they are also not getting ALL gun owners to support them either, maybe that should tell you something? Of course, of course. We are stupid so what do we know?? LOL
-
I honestly can't disagree with Stubby on the Rambo thing. I surely can't stop anyone from hunting with an AR if it's legal to do so and if they want to, but just look at any gun magazine, gun catalog or walk into any gun shop these days. It's para-military this or para-miitary that from freakin head to toe without even getting into the gun section. I go back a ways and it sure as hell wasn't this way when I started hunting and getting interested in guns. And I'm sure it wasn't when those before me starting bringing the Mausers and Enfields with them to hunt. No way! The guns being marketed these days have a MUCH greater emphasis on military and law enforcement than they ever did before. Is this a good thing for gun ownership in this country? My opinion is that it surely is NOT. But gun owners are making their own beds here, so I reckon they will have to sleep in them.

This is interesting to me. I wasn't aware that there has been a downward trend in trophy bucks in these areas. My guess would be that these areas are simply getting overhunted. Becoming a well known trophy area doesn't exactly work to the advantage of big bucks. You get outfitters leasing up land and getting hunters in to kill these bucks, and before you know it there aren't that many big bucks around anymore. This happens in LOTS of places. A place is great for a few years and then everyone wants to hunt it and after a few years the place becomes a wasteland. This should be a lesson for all those that think it would be great for NY to become a big buck state and to try to attract non-resident hunters to come in. Yeah, it would probably make some landowners and outfitters some money for a few years, but if you overdo it things will go down hill pretty fast. Lets not even begin to talk about where all this would leave the resident hunters.

You aren't kidding there! I once fired my .270 at a 10 X 4 foot piece of plywood at 1000 yards and damned if I didn't hit it. I was about 4 feet low and 2 1/2 feet to the right of the bullseye, but I connected. And this was with open sights. My next two shots I could not even find on the plywood. They must have gone thru the same hole as the first. Now that's accuracy for sure!!!
-
If you want the .270 just to have another gun then I guess you should get it. If you want it to hunt with, then it doesn't make sense since you already have a .30-06. The NY gun season is a few weeks long but how many times do most of get out to hunt? Probably not too many days in total, so honestly it will serve little purpose having a .270 since you already have an .06. In my opinion it's best to hunt with one gun instead of picking up a different one each time out.

I have a .338 Win Mag, and you definitely won't find it everywhere. I don't fire it much at all, but the last I checked it was not very easy to find. Since we no longer can mail order ammo in NY, it definitely makes things tougher. I would suggest taking a drive to the Cabelas in PA and stock up that way. It's a nice place to visit if nothing else. Oh, make sure you take a good amount of money with you because .338 Win Mag ammo is not cheap. Probably averages close to $50 a box. If you want the premium stuff it will set you back even more.

Could have figured that this thread would turn into a debate over AR's being suitable for hunting. LOL I for one will stick with my bolt actions. To me that's what a big game rifle is supposed to look like. And yes, I have killed 3 deer one after the other with it, so multiple deer can surely be taken with one. Most especially in a state like NY I'd never even consider hunting with an AR. You get stopped by a state trooper or DEC officer and then all of a sudden they get more interested in whether your rifle is in violation of the SAFE act than they are whether you violated any game laws. That there is enough of a reason for me to stick with a bolt action or other more common hunting arm where there will be no room for anyone to bust my balls over the type of gun I have in my possession. If any of the rest of you are fine with potentially being given this extra special treatment by law enforcement, then knock yourselves out hunting with them!

I think a hunt on SI was briefly discussed on this forum before. Could you imagine the media circus that would be? A hunt in the media capital of the world?? Oh man, I think it would do more harm than good to hunters. I don't think I'd want to be that hunter legally hunting on SI. You'd be tarred and feathered and you wouldn't be able to escape the wrath of anti-hunters and the media. Just not worth it. I guess someone will have to come up with some sort of solution if deer numbers keep getting higher, but I really doubt legal hunting will ever be considered for more than 5 minutes.
-
Wow, that's something. Now did these guys really think they'd never get caught?? Not like Staten Island is some remote wilderness area where in many cases a poacher might never get seen or caught. I still find it mind boggling that deer have taken such a strong hold on Staten Island. They will definitely become a big problem if they aren't already. And NO one needs to even bring up legal hunting as a solution because it will NEVER happen within NYC limits.

I would agree that they shouldn't advertise these products to work outdoors if they can't, but there are and always have been untruthful claims by sellers. Most definitely in the hunting world. How about all the game calls, buck lures, Walker game ears, etc. that claim to work like magic? They've been selling this stuff for years and they are still suckering people into buying it. I would put game cameras in the same category. You buy at your own risk with a high probability of failure. And with game cameras if it don't fail it will probably get stolen, so there isn't much going for it whichever way you slice it.

You guys have the sense of humor of doorknobs. I actually have no idea how and from whom these prizes were given out. I have absolutely NO interest in any of this. I only tried to make a funny comment to Joe asking when his prize would be sent out. For those who are too young to remember around here, Rice-a-Roni used to be a popular consolation prize on many TV game shows during the 60's and 70's. Instead of sending contestants home with nothing, they gave them a years supply of Rice-a-Roni. Better than nothing I guess. LOL

People are paying $100 or more per month for phone/internet/TV. The various services are probably charging people way MORE than they should for this, but really what can anyone expect from a $100 camera that as others have said is being exposed to the elements for months at a time? Honestly you won't get anything of quality for that kind of chump change. Shouldn't even begin to expect that it will last very long really.

That's cool for sure! Really nice to see these majestic birds, our national symbol, reestablish themselves in the Buffalo area.......

Hopefully he was only joking, and only trying to make a point. You'll never have all your property patrolled 24/7, even if you live on it. Plenty of property owners have been given a lot of grief by trespassers and neighbors who set up stands right on property lines. Standing tough with them like you think you will be able to isn't always a sure fire solution either. People can be insane and can take revenge when you least expect it and in many different ways. Instead of having a hunting utopia of their own, many property owners only end up with a lot of headaches. Hopefully that won't be your case, but I think that's the point that poster was trying to make to you.
