  1. Plastic Snapple bottle...QUIET, plastic cap, refill with whatever I want...usually ice tea.
  2. Been passing doe and small bucks since the opener...After hunting hard, in areas where I have 2 "shooter" bucks on camera, I decided I had to fill one of my 4 doe tags. This afternoon that happened with a nice mature doe, 1 shot, clean kill...BUT I hate shooting doe with fawns...I let them walk all week, and just had to get it done....I have done this many times in my hunting career, but it bothers me every time. I know the odds are very good the fawns will survive fine, and end up hanging with the herd this winter, I just wish every big doe I see, didn't have little ones in tow, Anyone else feel the same?
  3. The deer on my avatar was 2.5, and was 139 3/8....Its awfully hard to judge age by antler size, mass, ect...genetics and food are HUGE factors....Just my experience.
  4. Sunset today was 4:37pm....I am sure you will get many opinions regarding the time of your kill here, I will leave that to others.....Congrats on your first buck/deer.
  5. Uncle Charlies is the BEST!...Don't go anywhere else..
  6. A lot to digest here BUT, the deer was not "faking dead"....My guess is It was in shock from being shot. When you kicked it, it was startled enough to regain whatever it needed to continue it natural response to get the hell away from you. I hope you ended up killing and recovering it. Lesson learned.....Finish a breathing deer!
  7. Ahhhh, this is what hunting is all about...and something the anti hunters will never understand. Congrats to both of you, not on the biggest buck in the state, but by far the most important! My dads been gone 21 years, and I would do anything to have one more hunt with him. God bless you and pop.
  8. VERY sad....Condolences to family and to shooter, who's life will never be the same. At 51 years old, I still can't understand how ANYONE, EVER, shoots at movement or noise in the "brush". I have shot many, many deer, and I have always know the sex, and size of the animal before shooting. AND, I have always made sure whats behind the deer is case I miss. Hunters safety courses spend hours on this....How does it happen almost every year?????
  9. JJ, takes a lot of courage to 1, not get sucked into that mess...2, to come here and share your thoughts. I was brought up in a hunting family that occasionally bent the rules. When I was young, I may have bent a couple myself. Back then we had "party permits" for doe...it is exactly what it sounds like, 2-3 people on 1 doe permit. You had to decide who had it for each particular "sit", so only 1 doe was taken. Today, with all of the permits available, there is no need to not tag a deer. As I sit here today, I can legally shoot, 1 buck and 4 doe during gun season. I know not all zones are this liberal, but still, everyone usually get a least 1. Sounds like your people "get off" on breaking the game laws while killing deer...That said, unfortunately they are not the only ones. My advice, be honest.....tell your dad how you feel. He may not change, but also may respect you for your convictions.

8F, relatively quiet both days....BUT, it was one of the top 10 worst 2 days for weather I can remember for a opening weekend...Warm, full moon, unusual SE wind, high winds Sunday with rain. As we all know, these words don't describe ideal whitetail hunting conditions. My prediction is, those who continue to hunt, will see much better activity, and have success as we get into colder, calmer weather. I passed on antlerless deer both days....I know I can fill those tags later.......I was hoping for 1 of 2 bucks I saw during bow. Good luck, and be safe.
  11. Congrats...put him on the wall.
  12. I agree Catskill....highs are forecasted to be in high 40s in 8F, with light winds...I have hunted opening days in pouring rain, thick fog, high winds, and 70 degrees.....Not thrilled about wind direction, (SW), or full moon, but they will be moving. As long as the winds are relatively light, and temps are below 50-55 I am happy Good luck and be safe!!
  13. Law, I have used them several times....Don't remember if I paid tax or not, but site should tell you that. If they are located in or ship from NY state, then there will be tax. Any decent garage will mount and balance for reasonable amount.....Obviously do the math to see if what your saving is worth it...if savings isn't great, I would buy local.
  14. Been "lurking" for a while....Thought I should join in...Thanks. BTW, my status says newbie hunter, I've been deer hunting for 36 years...So I guess it's a designation for the site, eh?
