I roosted a bird last night and made all the preparations to head in this morning with hopes of getting a bird with my new bow. Morale was pretty low since I've had a rough turkey season so far with 1 missed turkey and some sloppy weather on all of my days off. As soon as first light came I gave a few clucks on my caller and heard a gobbler going absolutely mental about 70 yards from me. I heard him fly down and start coming in, but got hung up around 40 yards and was scanning the horizon. I went silent and waited to see what he'd do when he spotted the Decoy and started bee lining into it. I saw an opportunity to draw when he went behind a huge rock pile and waited until he was about 20 yards out. For the first time in my life i was able to calm myself down and go through all of the steps in my head. Make sure the pin is on him, bow is leveled, and that i'm looking through the correct eye ( unfortunately I've missed this step before) He stopped 20 yards broadside and I drilled him with one in the chest. He jumped up and flew about 50 yards away and hit the ground running. He must have went another 40 yards and piled over. Got in the woods at 4:45 and had my bird by 5:30am. Cleaned him up and was at work in the city at 9:00am. I had a plan and stuck to it and it worked out perfectly. I was so excited to get my first turkey with the new Mathews!! Cant wait to make some Turkey Scarparello tomorrow night. Picture posted below!

Thanks man... yea I'm all ears on this one. Love the opportunity to learn and potentially put some meat on the ground. I splurged and bought the Kuiu Chugach rain set. Pretty penny, but super light and relatively quiet. Of all the boots that i've used in the past, my $30.00 Kamik's have outlasted them all. Super comfortable. Wore them for a week straight while pushing bird / rabbits this past winter. I have 2 pairs, so will prob bring em both

Another pic of it. I deff think it was from last year. Backbones, pelvis, and ribs were everywhere. Shame, great deer I also found this one... Great mass, too bad it got chewed up Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Woo glad someone started a thread like this. Going to do some scouting this weekend and take a look for some sheds. I pulled my cameras out 3 weeks ago, so not sure if they are still holding on to their antlers

Thanks! Its the 6" brace. I honestly can't wait to go. Just have to practice as much as I can and hope for the best. Regardless of the outcome, will certainly be an incredible experience!

I just put a deposit down for my first ever guided hunt and first ever Elk trip! Going to be hunting Idaho opening weekend for 6 days and legitimately couldn't be more excited. 2015 / 2016 I've worked my butt off and decided to treat myself with this trip and a new bow. I have been a Hoyt guy for the last few years but after holding the new Mathews Halon 32, I legit fell in love and made the switch. Gonna be shooting FMJ's with Grizzly Stik Massai 125g single bevel broad heads. Got a Hogg father single pin sight and the new Axion 2 in 1 stabilizer. The bow feels so good and I feel much more balanced while full draw. I legit couldn't be more excited. Now I just need to make sure i'm in the best shape possible and am shooting dimes at 60 yards for my trip!

There is some public land in Westchester county. 45 minute drive from the city. PM me and i'll give you some details on where a few of my buddies hunt.

Agree, no way that thing opened up. Look at the first picture. Lucky you didn't slice your hand open while getting/butchering it. Pretty cool find though!

Just had a basket 6 walk by at 20 yards. Young deer with some good genetics. Cold, cloudy and still. One of those perfect hunting days -

Tomorrow will be the coldest morning of the year so far here in Westchester. My camera has shown an absolute buck parade the last 7 days. We'll see if I can get one on the ground just in time for thanksgiving. -

I noticed that all the deer at my spot were coming from infront of me in the evening.. and walking away from my cameras in the morning, so I decided to follow the trail and move my stand to a choke point where they are going to/from their bedding areas. I found one good spot that had some rubs and a good heavy trail. I hung my lone wolf ladder sticks and was attaching my life line when I hear crashing behind me. 40 years behind me (while i'm in the tree hanging my stand) I see a doe walking down the path and a beautiful 8 ptr on her six. They walked right by and headed up the hill to where I suspected they have been bedding. I leave for Florida tomorrow to fish for two days.. but next Wednesday its on!! -

Tough morning.. Up at 4:40am and couldnt find my keys! Ended up taking a taxi to my buddies spot (I leave all my gear there). Got in at 6:30 and bumped what looked like a real nice deer. Very still cool morning. Praying to redeem myself! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -

How Early Before Sunrise Do You Get In Your Stand?
StevieSacs replied to buffalojay83's topic in Bow Hunting
I deff try for 30 minutes but always end up running a bit late. 1 hour would prob be perfect. really give the woods time to chill -
I am off this weekend ( Going to DC), but am taking the day off on Monday to hunt. Just realized monday is the full moon and apparently the biggest full moons in 70 years! Wondering how that will affect the hunting if any? Last year I had my big boy come in on both of the full moon days... so hopefully he sticks to the pattern! http://www.space.com/34660-closest-supermoon-full-moon-in-69-years-forecast.html ^ a link to the supermoon article

I switched to 125G last year. I bought all 125G field tips that I practice with before the season. During the season I take one arrow and one of my broadhead and make it my target arrow.

When I show my first buck it haunched over and walked away slowly. Luckily I was able to shoot em again and he took off. Never found the 2nd arrow but the first one was covered in stomach matter. Heard they typically walk off when they get hit in the guts. -

Have to go to DC this weekend. Think i'm going to go into work late for the next 3 working days and hunt 6:00am - 8:15am and get into the office at 930. I feel like the mornings are on fire in Westchester. I've been after this 8 ptr on my buddies property for the last 3 seasons ( 5 1/2 year old this season) that I named "Thor". Cams showed that he only came out 3 times in daylight last year and so far once this season. I have a feeling he's beded down infront of my stand right now. -
I have a buddy that swears on the skunk cover scent and he literally puts it on HEAVY. I didn't know if it would actually spook the deer or not, since it they spray when they feel threatened/spooked. I've had a few bucks come down wind of me this season and they have been spooky as hell / will walk around since they know something is up. Obviously not much you can do when wind starts swirling. But i'm looking to step my game up a bit.

Hey Guys, I'm sure there is a post like this somewhere, but figured i'd start a new one. I was wondering what everyone scent control regiment was for storing their clothes, airing em out..ect I typically wash all my gear and put em in a plastic sealable container with one of those earth dryer sheets. I hang my outter layers outside the night before I hunt and wash my base layers every 2-3 sits (Depending if I'm sweating like a pig walking in) Always take a shower with scent free soap before I head in. I'm sure some people have some other things they add that I could include in my process... or maybe some people don't go as hard. Just trying to see how you guys manage your gear/scent Thanks! At this morning on a new piece of land and had a beautiful 6 come in down wind. Was deff spooled cause of this sloppy wind. An hour back and forth of some light grunting rattling until he finally walked away. Closest he came was 60 yards. Just got food and came to location #1 to see if i can put some bone on the ground / surf in this damn tree. Last few days have seen alot of activity. Safe to say its on in Westchester Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
