I haven't been on here much since moving to Indiana, mostly because I haven't had a ton of time in the field. over Christmas break I opened up Facebook to see that a former employer and friend had lost his oldest son to a drunk driver. His boys are good men (I still remember his youngest son getting of the bus as I was loading one of the work trucks. As he's walking up the driveway I hear "Call me any time Just ring 36 24 36 hey I lead a life of crime Dirty deeds, done with sheep".) Apparently mike had started a guiding service and had taken out a little boy as his first client. He had already introduced his younger brothers to the outdoors. If anyone feels called I'm sure Gavin and E.J. Here is another buck a friends father shot a couple years ago in Allegany county. I did this wood buring last year for him.

Its a wood burning - pyrography. Its burned into the piece of wood with an instrument that is somewhat like a soldering iorn. His name is Josh and he is one of my college roomates. His nickname is trout (his handle on here). I bust his chops about that thing he calls a beard (although Im not one to talk). So I named it the Hairy Trout (Now you can get your mind out of the gutter ) Hobby really. Ive done a couple pieces for money but not a lot. Ive thought about charging for them but it wouldnt be cheep. Im not sure I could do that any cheeper than $400.

I just finished this up for a buddy of mine and member of the forum. He shot this buck a couple years ago. There is 20 hrs in it and I took a photo after every two hours if anyone wants to see the progression.

Shot a doe yesterday in the AM. Saw a couple small bucks but the property owner doesn't want anything under 130 shot.

In Indiana Ive been largley absent from the woods for the past two hunting seasons since moving to Indiana. This years archery season didnt go as well as I had hoped. So tommorow the pumpkins take to the woods. Im glad to be getting out but a little bummed i cant use my 257 roberts (no rifles in Indiana). Now i get to see how Indiana rednecks stack up against the lot that hangs out on this site.

I have an 835 which is close to 20 years old now. Originally i got it as a turkey gun (and it throws one heck of a pattern) Winchester HV rounds work the best in mine with an extra full turkey choke (dont remember the brand). You cant use the turkey choke with steel shot but it shouldnt hurt the barrel as Mr VJP stated. The barrel is protected by the shot cup all the way down the barrel, its just that the steel shot wont compress like the lead when it leaves the barrel and could split your choke. I switched out to a kicks mod choke and it doubles as a waterfowl killing machine as well. Ive been thinking about doing the same thing with a cantilivered rifled barrel as well. Now that i live in Indiana i cant use my rifle anymore so i need something to throw slugs with. This year I am using my Winchester Model 12 (sweet 16) but next year i think i am going to be getting a new barrel for the 835.

8 is an interesting number, care to elaborate? And as far as confession go's Catholics do Confess to God directly. When a Priest hears confession he is acting "in persona christi", in the person of Christ. And no I am not saying that priests are gods they are Gods instruments. The apostles were given the authority to forgive sin by Jesus and that authority was passed on to the apostles successors (Catholic priests). John 20: 21-23. Belo the Church isn’t looking all that great here or in Europe but if you look at Africa and the Pacific Catholicism is booming (there are 1.2 Billion Catholics worldwide). Vocations are up and the church is growing. Catholic means "Universal" or "of the whole" it comes from the Latin, kata holos. The Church is not something that is unique to our little piece of dirt. The relative peace we have had over the last couple hundred years is unusual. At most times in the Churches history she has been persecuted but yet she still grows. As far as loosing followers that’s to be expected from time to time. Look at John 6. In vs. 35 Jesus says he is the bread of heaven and his followers are upset (vs 41). So how does he respond? Vs. 51 he intensifies it by saying that his flesh is the bread and again his followers are upset. Finally he drives the nail home in vs. 56 by saying "whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood" (drinking blood was a huge no-no for a jew). His disciples say "this teaching is difficult who can accept it" (vs. 60) and finally they leave (vs. 66 "Because of this many of his disciples turned back and no longer went about with him"). I’m curious what you hadn’t thought about before and what "man made" laws you are referring to and what have the popes adopted? Culver I'm sorry about the way you and your family were treated. And on behalf of the Church I apologize for any pain and grief you or your family suffered. There is a problem here though. We are not talking on the same plain. By your above post I take it your definition of Orthodox to mean a grumpy old nun with a yard stick or a arrogant priest who thinks he can tear people down. It seems to me that what you like about the priest is that he was compassionate and showed mercy which I applaud. When I say orthodox what I mean is a teaching that is true or accurate to what the Church teaches. Which has no bearing on compassion, sympathy or mercy. You can have and Orthodox priest who is not compassionate and you can have a un-orthodox priest who is compassionate. About a year and a half ago I went to confession and afterward I was talking with Fr. And mentioned that at Mass I abstained from communion because I was in a state of mortal sin. I was told that I shouldn’t abstain from communion unless maybe I killed someone. That was an un-orthodox thing to tell me and it goes against Church teaching which is to abstain from communion if you are not in a state of grace. Fast forward to a year ago. I went to a very Orthodox persist for confession. I got ripped apart during confession and felt like never going back due to the lack of compassion. That being said the vast majority of priest that I have met (the orthodox ones) are very compassionate. They strengthen and encourage me and build me up. I hope you will consider coming back to the church and returning to the sacraments. Ill be praying for your family, dad and priest.

Yup, Ive commited more mortal sins than I can count. But thats what confession is for. I wouldnt say that the author of that article is going to martyred in any form, hes not saying anything that popular culture is going to come after him for. Religion is loosing ground because it dosent actually stand for anything anymore. There is no spine to Christianity because everyone creates a Jesus that agrees with them. They pick and choose which passages of the bible support there particular view and then they claim there right. I wouldnt say we know whats right and wrong, we know what we like and dont like, what will draw scorn from our peers and what they will applaud us for. Our laws are based off of group consensus according to whats in fashion. The ultimate sin in our society is to draw a conclusion "to judge". I always find it ironic that in order for someone to say dont judge they must first make a judgment about the other persons judgment. There are something like 45,000 protestant denominations at the moment (or 45,001 if you consider the Anglicans upcoming split), 23 Catholic Churches (1 Latin right and 22 Eastern although they are really one because they all recognize the Popes athority), and the Orthodox Churches (not sure how many). Not sure where other faiths stand. I dont see God slapping your hand for being a hunter or for fishing (especially not if your spiritual father "preist" told you to do it). God might have some words but they wont be for Culver they will be for his priest. I wasnt raised with any faith. My parents taught me morals (all be it with a relative world view), I had manners, got good grades, was polite. Everyone always told my mom "your son is so great why didnt you have any more kids". Its possible to raise that type of child without religion but i would sure say religion isnt going to hurt your chances getting there. And my point isnt that he shouldnt spend time with his dad in the woods. He absolutly should. My point being is as Catholics we are mandated to go to Church on Sunday. If we trully believe that we are recieving Christs body, blood, soul and divinity in the eucharist there is nothing more important. I would be concerned for the priest not Culver. Culver may or may not have believed it but that preist took an oath when he was ordained and telling him to skip Mass on Sunday flys in the faith of what he commited to. And yes the woods will do wonders for a childs soul. Hence why I am re-doubleing my efforts to get my kids outside this year after a two year absence from the woods.

I can understand that you would stay for compassion but I cant say Im supprised you left. Ive met a lot of Catholics who have left the church and had similar stories. The largest Christian group in America are Catholics. The second largest group are fallen away Catholics. Preists are called to imitate Christ and die to one self for the sake of the people. Sometimes they dont like that idea and only want to focus on what wont ruffle feathers. Unfortunatly that is becoming fewer and fewer topics these days. If you look at the preists comming out of seminary now they are extremely orthodox. One joke thats told at seminary is "we didnt go into the preisthood to be celibit social workers". They are young and the parishes they lead are vibrant, young, large famileis and they are growing. I think thats because they follow Jesus and are not afraid to pick up there crosses. Ironically that inflexibility is one of the big draws to the Church for Converts like me. Your not going to last 2000 years if you compromise.

Let me guess that was 1960 / 70'sh time frame? He advised you to commit a mortal sin. Presits like that are the reason the church is in the state it is now. I quit hunting Sunday morning to set an example for my kids and that was before I even entered the church.

I applaud the man for speaking his mind. Its not going to be long before your sued or arrested for comments like that because its considered hate speech. I don't watch the show but Ive got a lot of respect for that family. It seems as though they are about the only ones who will stick to there guns and speak there mind. Ive got to imagine the politically correct police have put a big target on there backs. I also find it amusing that they get to "define" what all Christians believe.

When i met my wife she wouldn't have hurt a fly. I got her to go turkey hunting one day with me when we were dating. We were at a field edge and i was calling (cut and run) and i was about ready to pack it in. She said she herd a bird over the hill and i didn't believe her (I didn't here it). But i figured we would cross the corner of the field and tuck into the woods. Next time I called the gobble about knocked my hat off. I ended up shooting a nice bird with a 8 inch beard. I took her deer hunting a couple years ago and shot three doe opening morning. At that point she started thinking about hunting. Next year got her through the safety course but she was pregnant during that years season and didn't feel up to going out. Its been hard finding the time to get her out. She wont go without me so we need to have a sitter for the kids which isn't easy being so far away from family. Not many sitters will spend the night or show up at 4 or 5 in the morning. I hope to get her and some of my kids out this next season. Now i just need to find some land to hunt here in Indiana.

And this is why you listen to your hunter ed instructor, dad, gramps, mentor etc. etc. about approaching a down deer. I got a good laugh. I would have gone a whole different route about the time i saw it "breathing". Not so dead deer.

Well to say that I am some what bummed that i cant get into the woods this year would be an understatment. Some of the deer I have seen just makes it that much worse. I thought i was going to get the chance to pick up a nice 130" - 135" road kill last week but it got "claimed" by an off duty sheriffs deputy before i could get ahold of a C.O. and secure a tag. So this morning when I saw this guy lying on the side of the road i had his head off and in the back of the truck in about 30 seconds. Just wish I had both sides of the rack. Apparently the whoever hit it or another passer by could only manage to cut off the left side where the skull plate was busted and didnt think to cut off the head. I figure he would gross around 150" if he was uniform.

You won't regret it. Besides you will always have a excuse to be in the woods. I love taking my kids hunting.
