Town of Hume - I got to meet the current land owner of the property where Roosevelt Lucky was shot this spring while serving jury duty. Yes, soil, age, and cover are all huge. I was born and raised in CNY (Madison co.) I have lived and hunted in WNY (Allegany co. - lived, Catt and Wyoming co. - Hunted), I have a camp in the ADKs (Hamilton co.) and a very good friend / hunter who lives in Rennseleer co. Here is how i rate each of the listed counties. Madison - good food, good soil, good cover, moderate to high pressure = age can be a little iffy - overall average to above agerage NY hunting. Allegany co - poor soil, poor food, very good cover, Heavy pressure = not much age - overall poor to below average hunting. Wyoming co - good to great soil, great food, good to very good cover, moderate pressure = great hunting Catt co. - poor to good soil, good food, very good cover, moderate to high pressure = average to above average hunting (the area i am most familiar with (SE) is more like allegany co which lessens what was harvested a bit but the more north and west you go the better it gets). Renseleer co. - poor soil, poor food, good cover, Heavy pressure = below average to poor hunting. Hamilton co. - poor soil, poor food, Great cover, LOW pressure = few deer but the ones you do see have a better chance of being a quality buck with some age. As for dbHunters comments about hunter mentality I question if he has ever been in the WNY woods on opening day. My experiance tells me its not much diffrent regardless of where you are in NY. The only noticeable diffrence i have ever observed from WNY to CNY to the ADKs to Eastern NY is the habitat change and how that affects biology / development of the animal and how the habitat effects pressure or lack there of. I now live in Indiana and i am seeing almost the same exact patterns of record deer distribution out here. And to add to the conversation my In-laws live in NW Ohio which is has Really poor cover, Great Nutrition, Average soils and Heavy pressure and you dont see squat in that area. I also dont see a mentality change in hunters in IN or OH. But both states have a one buck per season limit. Not that i think that has much of an impact on NY since so few hunters actually connect with two racked deer a year. If anything i think poachers have more of an effect.

Ive taken rabbit, grouse, and squirrl while deer hunting. I keep a arrow tipped with a G5 small game head in my quiver.

What he said. Its a little late to try and figure out what the layout of the swamp is but you need to key in on the terrain. A small ridge that rises up just a foot can be a HUGE find. All deer that travel or live in that swamp will know about it. I had a spot that stuck out into a swamp with a bunch of Hemlock on the finger and it was awsome. I found my biggest ever scrape on the very tip of that finger 12+ feet across. Looked like a cow stood in the middle of it. Deer will also bed on Hummocks or small hills in the middle of the swamp. Knowing where those are can be a big help. Some times you cant see this stuff depending on what time of year it is. You need to travel the area at all seasons. You need to be able to look for things when the water is down and up and when you dont have leaves and you do. In my experiance parts of the swamp "shallows" so to speak will harden up faster in cold weather and can creat new travel routes that are not used when everything is still above freezing. If you have oaks the bucks might key in on them first during daylight hours if they are protected enough in the swamp before they leave the security of the swamp for the night. I loved hunting the swamps around my home town. So far Indiana doesnt have much in the way of swamp land. P.S. I grew up in your neck of the woods and have a good friend a few minutes from you so I have a good idea of the kind of terrain you are looking at. Stick with it there are some big swamp bucks in your area.

This is the first time I have been back on since i left NY. I saw the taxes thread and it warmed my heart NOT TO BE IN NY. Sorry but im lovin this. Not quite settled yet. Had two houses fall through so hopefully the third time is the charm. Did i mention we dont have school taxes in IN. Schools are funded through sales taxes (which are still a full 2 percent less than NY in most cases). Here are some interesting statistics. NY number of state employees = 300,000 NY populaiton = 18.5 million IN number of state employees = 30,000 IN population = 6.5 million If that werent enough i met a guy through work who offered to let me hunt on his land 200 acres (he shot a 17pt that grossed 170 out of the field behined his house last year). Hes got a wall full of deer just like that one. Everywhere i go i see RACKS on the walls and the biggest sets of sheds you ever saw, HEHE its like being a kid in a candy store.

Slight changes but we still would have saved over $400. Same thing happened to my in-laws when they moved to OH.

Interesting Indiana fact of the day. My current auto insurance in NY = a hair over $1000. My insurance in IN is .....................$500

As far as I can tell house prices are comparable if not more expensive than they are where i currently am.

5 years ago Unfortunately Indiana no longer offers a lifetime license otherwise that would be my first purchase there.

That SUCKS!!!!!!!!! I feel for ya.

Not in Indiana yet. Still packing my house up. I have seen multiple P&Y bucks on the walls of some of the houses i have looked at. I'm pumped about the deer hunting. I wont disappear from the forum completely. My parents still live here and i have a lot of ground i can hunt up in 7J. I also just got back from one of the farms i currently hunt and he said i will always have a place to hunt so long as he owns the land.

LOL - That would be me. Glad its getting some enjoyment.

Working with invasive species control for Indiana DNR in SE Indiana. I'm going to cover an area from Indianapolis down to the Ohio border by Cincinnati. Just put an offer in on a place near Brookville. Did i mention the tax rate is 1/8th of what it is here.

A couple of weeks ago i got a job offer in Indiana - SO LONG NEW YORK. For my celebration I blew off work and went fishing. The 8lb'er was the first fish of the day. The 12lb'er was the largest. All in all we caught 12 fish none under 4 lbs.

I was started reading this thinking "wow a civil AR thread" then i got to the bottom of the first page. Sure dosent take long for these things to degenerate. Ineviteably the argument i see most predominatly with this issue is there are not enough bucks or at least enough "big bucks". I dont see the point in DEC regulating all the other hunters in the state so a minority can get what they want. I know its for the "health" of the heard. So i would assume a viable substitue for not teaching our kids to use a gun to fix there problems is to hard. So logically we should turn to the government to regulate the guns. It is for the kids "saftey" after all. I have had the pleasure of meeting many, many hunters in this state who consistantly take big deer. They are young, old and everywhere in between. Farmers, carpanters, plumbers government employees. But they all have one thing in common. They BUST THERE A$$. Weather its the willingness to go the extra mile to get away from other hunters, hike 10 miles through the ADK's to track a buck, buy there own property (sucsessful buisness men), or literally repel down a cliff. They all put themselves in a position to kill deer (weather its through the use of money, time or physical effort). And for the record i admire guys who practice voluntary QDMA. I put them in the category with the guys above, there doing something. -
I know, I know. The evolution of my vehicle owner ship went like this. First truck 94 F-150 with an in line six. - modify my first truck with a 4" lift and 35" tires and mudding / trail riding locally. - Further modify the truck with a 8" lift and 38" tires, 9" rear axle with a Detroit locker, and another locker in the front, winch and a bunch of other gizmoe's and going on hard core off-road trips out of state. Then the realization sets in that chances are pretty good im going to break down out of state to the point where i cant fix it. I.E. disintegrate a tranny, motor, Axle etc. etc. In comes a 2001 3/4 ton Dodge with a 5.9, 6 speed to trailer the above - God i miss that truck. Then i get married have kids sell all my toys and i pick up my current ride from my father in-law.

I dont think it was a wise decision on the nurseries part to sell the plant but there isnt anything in regulation that prevents it. A nursery could sell poison ivy if it wanted. Its a horticultural oddity that is attractive to many people. Giant hogweed was brought here for the same reasons. Unlike Castor plants hogweed is able to establish itslef and there fore is considered invasive - i.e. something is done about it. I have seen castor plants for sale before, although it was with a warning. Its not all that uncommon.

Wallmart does not pay for any plant material until it passes the cash register. If you are a grower and you "sell" to Wally world you don't get paid until they do. So if there employees don't water enough or leave it inside a shipping container too long or disease or insects hit the stock they just throw it in the dumpster because the grower takes the loss instead of the store. What do they have left? This should work fine, this is how most nurseries carry over potted perennial stock. -
There's other things in life other than this site. I dont know to many farmers who can spend this much time online.

If you bothered to take the time to see what the church taught you might understand it some day. Democracy works - when you have absolute concrete beliefs. Right now our society has no absolute beliefs Moral or otherwise. We will continue to see our society erode until it is nothing more than a nanny state where the government knows best and you are "free" to do what you want so long as it is in line with the current administrations view. We have already seen the erosion of our rights here in this state with the SAFE act and the compromising of the 2nd and 4th amendments. Compromising the 1st amendment is coming its just a matter of time. Below is a quote from the Arch bishop of Chicago Francis George. "I expect to die in bed, my successor will die in prison and his successor will die a martyr in the public square. His successor [meaning the martyred bishop] will pick up the shards of a ruined society and slowly help rebuild civilization, as the church has done so often in human history." This in response to a question on the increasing secularization of society. The only organization which i see standing its ground is going to be the Roman Catholic Church. You can accuse priests of all being pedophiles but it doesn’t change the fact that sexual immorality is rampant throughout ALL of society. Answer this if you can. Statistically 1 in 4 girls is a target of sexual abuse and 1 in 8 boys. Are there really that many priests? When do they have time to hold mass? The church has stood for 2000 years in the face of every persecution possible and the church will continue regardless of what anyone says. Or would you prefer to continue with the character assassination. After all if you can’t win a fair fight what incentive is there to fight fair?
