  1. In the military I was in the Infantry(Inf) and Military Police(MP), I'm a hunter(duh), and 32 is my hockey number. You know, all the important things in life.
  2. Everything lookss green, depending on the quality of the scope you can't make out a lot of small details but you can see enough to know what you're looking at. With a real good one you can see everything you need to and more. They're fun to play with. Even better when they belong to the Army. You don't feel bad if it breaks that way.
  3. It means once the gun is sighted(zeroed) in, does it stay where it's supposed to or do the crosshairs move without touching the scope. Some scopes can't take the jostling of a truck on unpaved roads or a bump on the way to the stand and the crosshairs will not be where they were when you zeroed the scope in. Your POI will be off where you're aiming.
  4. 600 bucks is a lot of cash for a piece of clothing, what about the Kelvin jacket from Sitka? Seems to be billed as a super warm type jacket also and it's nearly 1/4 the price on Cabela's. Unfortunately they only have it in medium and they don't have the forest camo pattern. But I'd look around and see if there's a shop near you that carries it so you can check it out. Even on the Sitka website the Kelvin is 1/3 the price of the Incinerator. Take the extra money and get him some real good layering clothes underneath it.
  5. It's a neat coincidence this thread came up, was listening to a radio show and the other day and they were talking about how when you travel through NY you don't see the cars with deer strapped to them like you used to, and the hosts speculated that it was due to less hunting, which is why so many areas are over populated with animals. On the other hand I always sort of attributed it to the potential for clashes with antis and the fact that it's just easier to conceal the animal instead. It's interesting that some guys still do it the old fashioned way. Someday I hope I'll need a plan for getting a deer into soft top Wrangler.
  6. That's pretty cool right there to get two pics of the same deer definitely doing some growin' up.
  7. I'm gonna sue Budweiser. I've never had a raging kick ass pool party erupt anytime I've cracked open one of their beers. Who's with me?
  8. Yeah that's cause Dutchess is a shotgun only zone. Not all of region 3 is shotgun only.
  9. That's for shotgun only areas. In rifle areas you can hunt day or night for predators with a rifle.
  10. I'm definitely just gonna say "damn the torpedos" and hunt the area anyway. I haven't had much chance to scout it so if I don't see anything I don't see it, but I can always get lucky or use that time to try and pattern deer and see where they may be. I'll take my old weatherproof army notebook and keep a log o what I see. Then I can get in there next year and really put the work in.
  11. Thanks guys, that's about what I figured and it makes me feel better to hear it. I don't think he meant it like they're poaching, but more a case of the locals filling all their tags because they're around every day and he and his father and uncles only get up there on the weekends. Most of them also haven't hunted regularly in a couple years due to age so that may play a part too. I just figured I'd get some non-biased advice. Heck it could just be they're not very lucky hunters. Man I wish it was deer season already.
  12. I need a little advice from the Sullivan/Ulster hunters here. My great uncles have had a piece of property up there for as long as I can remember. It's where I hunted as a kid before I gave it up for hockey. Now that I'm looking to get back into hunting again of course it's great to have a private spot to use that borders some state land. I don't have specifics since it's been about 15 years since I was there but I know it's in the area of Liberty/Grahamsville. The problem is the reputation there is that "the locals shoot everything and there's no deer anymore so it's not even worth it to buy a license." Of course the family members I'm hearing this from are usually a bunch of opinionated blowhards when it comes to this stuff. Would I be wasting my time there? I mean success is not the end all be all of hunting of course, but I don't necessarily want to spend all day being cold in the woods just for the great winter scenery you know what I mean? I'd like a little excitement and maybe a chance at filling the freezer for the first time. Thanks.
  13. Any tool that can make the dirty work easier can't be all bad.
  14. I was flipping between that and the baseball game this afternoon, looked pretty neat. Did he say what kind of rifle he was using? I caught the shot he made on the running hog with open sights but couldn't tell what rifle he was using.
  15. Going back to the previous page about hunter gatherings/members getting together to hunt, the old forum had a "find a hunt/find a hunter" section where people could list lease or camp openings, trip openings or just find say someone that might be looking for a hunting partner in a certain area and things like that. Might be nice instead of posting in a more specific forum and hoping someone reads it and replies. If it's in it's own forum it might be easier for members to coordinate. Just a thought.
  16. FMJ's don't expand like soft points, they're made to more cleanly penetrate, which on a coyote might not be so bad, less mess that way. Now I've only fired 5.56mm FMJ's with the military, so I'm not sure how that would impact a larger round like the .303 or .308 though. You may still get a big mess just from the size of the bullet. You may want to check too and make sure they're legal. I believe for most species they aren't, and that might include varmints/predators too. For plinking though, there's nothing wrong with them. It's also entirely possible I'm completely wrong. My only experience with larger rounds so far is in machine guns!
  17. That's what I'm trying to dig up, I was either 12 or 13 at the time, whatever the minimum age is for a junior license, so it was back in the early 90's and my uncle who took me at the time can't remember the exact place, I know it was a sporting goods store somewhere around the Pearl River area and near Rt. 59. Real specific right? I'm hoping maybe if I get "close enough" info the DEC office can help me out. If not I have no problem taking the class again, it might not hurt to get a refresher. It does mean missing 3 nights of baseball though, but I think I'll manage.
  18. Hey everyone. I finally decided to get back into spending my free time in the outdoors. I haven't been hunting since I was about 14 years old, I'll be 30 in October. My uncles own some property on the border of Sullivan and Ulster county, and I have friends in Esperence that have some spots too so I'm looking forward to this year. It's weird to be a rookie at all of this again. I enjoyed the old empire hunting site and used to read it regularly, I decided to actually post an intro on this site though now that I found it. I've had trouble finding my old hunter ed. certificate so it looks like I'll be going to the class in New City next month then waiting impatiently and probably going after some ducks, geese and fall turkey. I'm not sure if I'll be deer hunting this year. I'm looking forward to participating a little in the discussions around here. Neil
