Looks like there may just be statewide Antler Restricts.
JFB replied to Four Season Whitetail's's topic in Deer Hunting
Yes, because it's a shared resource. You want to over harvest or wound every tree you own on your property... go for it. I too own a large business, pay large taxes... has nothing to do with it. -

In a situation where deer density is so low and bucks are rare, it makes even the smallest of bucks a challenge and it's all relative. In that situation, if fork horns or 6pts are rare, I'd call it a challenge and harvest it too. I hope you were able to get meat in the freezer! -

If they have a one buck or AR, I will so enjoy catching the neighborhood slobs who can't resist shooting every running animal they see. With AR (which I don't feel is a good statewide solution), it would force identification. And with one buck, it might also make them think twice before lobbing their shots and make them decide if they want that buck. -

Well if my single comment is enough to make alter what you shoot, thats pretty sad but I can't say I'm surprised. Nor am I surprised when I see the camo clad moron at the gas station in his rubber boots, or at Dicks buying his gun the week of the season, or when you shoot yearlings year after year after year despite hunting a high deer density area. The world is full of under achievers and entitlement. Personally I'd settle for one buck rule and if they shorten the gun season or make it a touch later it would be icing on the cake. I just returned home from Ohio... They have a one buck rule, a one week shot gun season (three round limit per gun), and just under a week ML season along with a long archery season. My goodness, how do those poor poor Ohio hunters ever survive (sarcasm)? You'd probably implode if you had to obey such laws that nurture the resource rather than deplete the nuisance. If NY makes regulations that fit each area of the state based on their needs as is being suggested, the overall herd will be far better off. -

Just curious if, hypothetically, you had the power to vote in a one buck rule... Would you? -

Are you just being cruel? Too good to be true. Too many entitled 'hunters' out there who like being able to shoot whatever they see for months straight. Not to mention the DEC treats deer like nuisance rats. -
Why no rifles in some shotgun only areas
JFB replied to Borngeechee's topic in Rifle and Gun Hunting
No one knows for sure; but to play devils advocate it seems like so many of those quick 5 shot vollys come from slug guns and wounded deer often just die later- so that certainly doesn't age deer any. Seems like when riffle came in to areas I used to hunt, there were more one shot sequences so perhaps that tags a guy out quicker as compared to multiple wounding sequences. I'd love to see guys put one round in the chamber and the second in their pocket... bet they'd harvest more and wound less. Heck, I say one buck a year and one bullet at a time and no matter the round I think it would be safe. -
WTB slug gun or cantilever 20 gauge 870 rem barrel
JFB replied to thunnus's topic in Hunting Items For Sale and Trade
Can't say enough about the Savage 220f 20 gauge. It replaced my 870 and I have a riffled 12 gauge for the 870 I'd sell. -
I'd attempt to speak to him for an attempt to work it out, and I'd also tape record the conversation on my phone knowing that he will probably admit to doing it to bother you. NY is a one party consent state and that means your own consent is enough to legally tape him without knowledge. Then, like stated above, when he continues and you call the DEC you may force their hand for them to press this guy to stop. With a pattern, warning, and possibly a tape recording you may get traction with the lazy DEC. Lastly, it's hard not to over pressure 20 acres. Consider hunting the state land to lay off your own a bit.

Not as much money as I would have guessed; but still a chunk. If you have pics of the finished structure that would be cool.

Mine are hang on's... bring back chain instead of straps. Make sure the seat goes up and that there is decent foot space directly below the seat area so you can stand perfectly straight against the tree and not have the cables interfere with your leg. Lastly, NO squeeeeeek.

What is a ball park price of something like this?
-
Also curious what was charged? I know alot of taxidermists sub that out for pretty low costs and then charge quite a bit.

NY already has a terrible "management" system with long gun seasons, etc. Extending it any longer simply keeps some slobs out driving the woods to holy hell. How about we earn a buck system to force doe take in needed areas. NY management a joke and unfortunately enough yahoo's out there to keep it popular rather than going the other direction and making it more selective or treating deer like a resource. Such stark contrasts to other states who are not addicted to shooting nearly every deer they see.

I have a friend looking to do a Fox mount. I've got some great deer taxidermist references but have never done a fox first hand and curious who you've used before I search their web sites for fox photos. Anyone recommend a Rochester area taxi for a fox mount? Any pics? Thanks in advance.

Doug, will send you PM.

It sure is sweet when you find a gun (especially a slug gun) that you like. My question is where did those two shots hit on the deer? People often talk about "knock down power" but it's usually a function of hitting certain bone or parts of the body such as the scapula which I believe in the shoulder drops them, but other shoulder shots at times are not as deadly. I aim to miss shoulder but to get both lungs and only once in my life have I knocked a deer over with this shot (oddly enough it was this year ML using a new Parker Ballistic Extreme); but they all die quickly with a double lung obviously. It will be interesting to see if these Ballistic Extreme continue to transfer energy such that it knocks pure lung shot deer over which has been contrary to my experience.

sbuff the new one is still unopened in the box. The other riffle was returned.

Yes the other gun was a Triumph as well. Triumph got excellent reviews, and I liked the handling, but there was a problem with the hinge pin when it was broke open. I could not get it repaired by TC in time so they sent me a new replacement riffle but it too was too late for this season so I used my old Encore. Will be a good deal for someone looking for a new TC.

I have a brand new T/C Triumph Bone Collector Weather Shield Realtree AP still in unopened box. I received this gun after having issues with a different riffle and I was unable to use this replacement gun in time for the NY season. It sells at Bass Pro for $629. It sells at Muzzle-Loader.com for $580. I will let it go for $540 firm if I have to ship, $550 if it's local. Please send me PM and I can answer any questions. I am in Rochester. Thanks, will post for sale on craigslist shortly.

My biased opinion would be to stick with the compound. Keep this in mind... many people shoot well on the range with field tips but then they put on a fixed broadhead and don't realize they can amplify any shooting form errors causing them to miss their mark. A fixed head can obviously also shoot differently if the bows not tuned perfectly. For those reasons, a good mechanical can be an advantage. Fixed are great, but only when form is good and bow is tuned very well. What heads you shooting? Also, beginners often take real poor shots and "miss" but it's often because the shot is hard or low percentage. Take only shots that are broadside and within your range. As for buck/doe fever, see if you can put yourself in a position to start letting more deer walk under you (and not try to kill them). May sound funny, but the more times you put game under you where you don't go into panic mode, the better you become when the moment of truth is there next time. If you hunt an area where sightings are rare, that advice may not be realistic. But if you let a couple pass under you, or draw on some but don't fire, you become much more relaxed and in control. Also no one says you can't go in the woods in the off season to let some deer walk under you and pretend (without bow). Chances are that makes the real hunt much more calm and in control. And a good mentor is priceless.

Surrounded by some of the best bass fishing in the country, literally.

I've not yet shot the Aerolite Powerbelt (or any other PB) but heard good things about them. What specifically don't you like about them? Seems like the other side of the coin says that Sabots gum up your barrel more due to plastic contact. Regarding the SST's... many love them because they are so accurate and others equally say they don't expand. I tend to side with superior accuracy because if I know I can put it in the lungs it's in the freezer. But I like to hear opinions from people who understand bullet performance better than myself.

Random question, but did you see any other hunters in distance or hunters tracks while on your hunt (I assume it's state land)

The local gun smith says the wiggle in the open position will cause accuracy issue and he appears to be right based on my results. He said it can effect how the gun locks or seats. Not to mention it's not great for confidence when it's tight one moment and wiggling the next.
