  1. Obviously large box stores would not be a check station. In Ohio, they used to register all sorts of mom and pop stores, gas stations, etc. I bought a license at a local bar once. They have since got away from checking in deer but most in Ohio wish they'd go back from what I understand.
  2. Went to Runnings in Canandaigua and no real deals. They did have an affordable one by Big Game (the Spectra I think it was called) for $140 range but they sold out. Nothing else in the price range and features I'm seeking. Same at Dicks/Walmart anywhere near Rochester. I'll keep my eyes open
  3. Disagree that earn a buck is any harder to enforce than any of their other regulations. Heck, they just put off entire WMU from buck hunting for the first 15 days and I'm fairly certain there were those not playing along. Things seem to change every year. How hard is it to not print a buck tag until a doe tag is filled? If you have to, charge an extra $5 to predesignated stores and DEC offices who you show the doe to. Cheaters will always cheat, but it could be done.
  4. I got one of these earlier in the year and they are decent. The platform does come to the tree. I'm tempted to go the Sportsmanguide route because that stand is tax and shipping free and is bigger. Keep the info coming. Thanks again.
  5. Thanks, I saw these two stands and they are the type where the seat frame does not go flush against the tree. Unfortunately, thats a deal breaker for me. But appreciate the heads up!
  6. If anyone stumbles on a good sale price, please share. Looking for a two man stands and the only real "must have" (other than price) is that the seat flips up and the platform goes all the way back to the tree so you can stand comfortably. I see one in Sportsmanguide for $135 but I'd love to get them cheaper because I'd like to buy several. Thanks.
  7. It blows my mind that this announcement and post does not WAKE hunters up. You posted 14 pages about how many don't see the deer like you want to, or looking for a new place to bow hunt etc, and right under your nose an announcement comes up (as was predicted) that an all out war to basically wipe out deer is next. Bend over, we're too lazy to do anything about it so get ready for phase 3. So much for land values as I just purchased 257 acres and all it takes is one "stakeholder" to light up the fields in August and do just about anything they want. And you thought nuisance tags were bad? I'd love to see sportsmen organize and boycott buying licenses for a year or two. And the organizations that I thought would care (such as QDMA) appear too stumped about which food plot to plant next to care there will be few deer to eat at it. Never mind we just had two record severe winters and numbers are clearly down. NY could have widespread EHD and they would move on with their proposal.

One friend of mine started using it this year and so far he says he's seen a difference. Personally, I don't like the thought of carrying it or screwing it in to each location but I do feel it could scientifically work. But I also wonder about the safety of it. To the guys who say "play the wind"... I agree but even when you do often I let deer pass me who are eventually down wind so I'll do whatever is reasonable to remain undetected and largely I do. Deer used to "blow" and "snort" but very rarely do that now after a long routine of scent free tactics I employ. We as hunters buy some pretty elaborate equipment (from bows, to bullets, to scopes, and soaps that all have their place so it's kind of funny to hear people so quickly dismiss something that may some day prove effective. It's got to be better than the "deer view mirror" anyway lol (and no I did not buy that either).
  9. Thanks, this was very helpful. I guess the only thing not covered was how a straight on shot to the center brisket typically performs on a big whitetail and 270?
  10. Long time archer and gun hunter but never really had much opportunity to hunt with riffle. I now have a place in Livingston county and just curious if you riffle fanatics change your shot placement because of your riffle (mine a 270)? I've heard of the old timer neck shots, etc. I myself am a tried and true double lung broadside guy but just curious what shot you like to take with a riffle such as 270?
  11. Bob is a great tracker and I've learned so much from him. And Thor is an awesome little dog! I joined deer search a couple years ago and have learned a ton and also have a dog learning. It's a free service but we do take donations and thats what keeps the club functioning. The absolute biggest thing I see in my short time doing this is two fold: 1) poor shot selection specifically 1/4 toward the deer hitting shoulder 2) Hunter loses the blood and continues to pursue the deer far too soon and jumping a deer that otherwise might die in it's bed over night. Bob is the one who taught me an intestine hit takes 18 hours to expire as compared to a true gut shot which takes 8. Thanks for sharing the great result.
  12. Which knocks do you use? Seems mine do not show up all that well in full day light. I agree, WAY too many people push deer too soon and they never find deer they otherwise would have.
  13. That is a fatal shot every time if you got stomach. Stomach will take roughly 8 hours so hopefully you did not push it after the shot. If it was not pushed, it is often within 200 yards. Go back tomorrow to search for body. Google search will give you alot of information on various shots. Best of luck.
  14. Thanks all. Which Nomad jacket was thick?
  15. I'm looking for suggestions on which brand of 100% waterproof jacket and pant you are happy with? I'm looking for uninsulated bottoms that are "form fitting" so that they are not baggy and like a wet sack of potatoes when rained on. For the jacket, I'm looking for WARM which might require a layering system. This will be used for gun season and late ML season on out of state trips where you hunt regardless of the weather. So far, I found an Under Armor jacket that is not bad (but it's $400) but many are that expensive. I've not been able to test the fit of their UA pants that are 100%wp. I also considered Nomad which looks like a nice pant but seems their jacket is pretty light. I was not a fan of the fit on Sitka waterproof pant. Thanks.
  16. Lots of possibilities. What broadheads are you using and have you practiced to see if they are flying the same as your field tips at ALL of your effective ranges?
  17. According to some, the only accurate way to age is by study of the sliced teeth (usually lower front two teeth) studied under microscope. Basically to count rings and confirm age. Everything else is an estimate and most of the ones I've sent to the lab came back a year different. So someone is wrong frequently.
  18. No, not when someone just gets a picture of a nice buck. I just thought it was possible seeing that the buck seems to pose front and center, several different days, several minutes at a time between pics, from different directions, appearing to focus on the same spot. I'm not trying to ruin any trail cam fun, but I'm also not a fan of hunting over bait (not accusing b/c I suppose anything is possible). Odd thing for me is that someone putting food out for early trail cam pics does not bother me (and I realize thats illegal too). But the thought of someone hunting over minerals or food does not sit as well.
  19. Great pictures, especially the one with the second buck in the background of the big bucks rack. Not trying to be difficult, but I'd be careful if there is a mineral lick type attractant bringing that deer in so consistently, especially if you are hunting near it.
  20. I admit I didn't read all the posts, but it appears Doc is the only one who is seeing thru the DEC's ploy. They want to be able to say "well that didn't work, so now we must".... Doesn't it anger you to sit here and be exploited? I can't believe the various organizations did not put up a more vocal stink about what the DEC is doing. Can't wait for next years archery/ML season. And god help us if that doesn't lower doe to their satisfaction.
  21. With so many different preferences, and some people trying multiple brands... I wonder how many people fall into the trap of not being sure how a particular broadhead fly's in their set up (or with their shooting form). I'm not saying any of you would do such, but I've seen a hand full of guys in my day just put on broadheads and never do the hard part of being sure how they fly. (not all "100 gr" heads weigh the same and even some in the same packaging are different). I used to be so anal with fixed bh flight that I was toasting too many targets and too many arrows. For that reason alone, I shoot mechanical and I still test the flight thoroughly. I don't think there's a head on the market that does not kill a deer quickly when you put it in the lungs... not putting it in the lungs because of bad flight or shot is another thing.
  22. What many of you are missing is the DEC is effectively removing any accountability measures they currently have imposed on them. They want to get rid of the red tape so they can just nuke the nuisance (deer) any way they see fit and no one will be able to say a darn thing about it. Not to mention they are making nuisance permits easier and all things easier to get numbers to a pathetic level. The 15 days are smoke and mirrors, they want the ability to change regs easier in the future so they can NUKE. DEC is not the sportsman advocate here when it comes to quality hunting experiences.
  23. SUCH BS! Read carefully, this is like reading the Safe Act and it creates lots of loop holes for the DEC to just nuke deer to please "local stakeholders". They clearly have no interest in pleasing hunters and admit failure to control the herd to these stakeholders liking. I bet there were lots of lawyers involved in writing this so that they know later on they can legally make quick and rash changes to nuke deer and get away with it without accountability. What really makes no sense is forcing doe harvest in bow season (this is a small segment of hunters) and even if that group arrows the heck out of doe, it won't dent things. They need to force the average hunter (the ones who flood the field for a couple weeks of gun season) to earn a buck and also for everyone to earn a buck. WHO CARES WHEN I SHOOT MY DOE? I'd happily earn a buck by shooting three doe and I'd get it done in the first few days or week. But to wait 15 days makes no sense. I also love how none of this was in the earlier release proposed reg changes.
