  1. That'd be good too! I'll concoct somethin'. Ya'll got me craving leeks!!!! and springtime!!!!
  2. I agree with all of that and you aint kidding about tracking with a red light! At minimum, I carry a small 1AA light, but usually a cheapo medium sized light. Since we're bustin out tips, I'll add that hand held lights are less cumbersome when carried on a strap around your neck. It allows you to drop your scan light and have both hands to prepare for the shot or to coax in a wary critter. WNYBuck, I see what you're saying about post 14. I forgot we had pics from that perspective.
  3. Oh heck yeah! Salt & pepper or whatever to taste. The leeks give a little crunch, replacing the celery and give that great onion/garlic taste. I always throw a pinch or 2 of sugar into my tuna. A little fresh parsley couldn't hurt either to keep your breath somewhat fresh! lol
  4. That is pretty rough to be standing in front of a rack of firearms and have one pulled on you. I guess the part of the safe act which monitors mentally ill gun owners hasn't taken hold, Buuut was the handgun registered to that coward???? I wonder if the media will divulge such info. If he wasn't permitted to carry/own that weapon who's gonna be the next unarmed citizen to take crap from another coward? Ooops! I started rambling and forgot this incident took place in PA. Yes he took the cowards way out, but he was obviously under mental distress. Atleast he didn't shoot anyone else. He could've been a contributing, taxpaying member of society, but just came to a bad spot in his life??? Dicks might be changing a few things after that! Reminds me of Gander Mtn. here in Broome Co. They got sued after they sold a vietnamese guy a handgun and he went and shot 13 people down at the American Civic Assoc. in Binghamton. a few years ago. All because someone there commented on his lack of English dialect.
  5. Looks like obama and the guy behind him are chewing tobacco.
  6. I may try to revamp that. Although I'm sure it's great, I cannot stand cheez-whiz. Nor can I deal with alot of cream cheese. Off the top of my head It may go something like this. 2C roughly minced leek 3C white sharp cheddar 1C mascarpone cheese 6 oz. queso fresco cheese 1 sm. jar of pimentos(4 oz.) 1/2 of a chipotle pepper "aka smoked jalapeno"; finely chopped or 3/4 tsp. ground Blend all ingregdients. A dallop in a warm bowl of new england clam chowder or tomato soup don't seem like a bad idea! Can ya'll tell that I skipped lunch? lol -side note- Laughing Cow brand has chipotle flavored queso fresco in 6 oz. packages if you'd rather not buy/make chipotle peppers. Thank you F-150 for the idea!
  7. The young tender leeks or "ramps" are delicious! I'm definately gonna try that recipe. They give tunafish the perfect zing too. I agree it's a bit early yet. When the daytime temps start hitting into the 50's it'll be time to be on the lookout.
  8. All of the above!.........(besides my previous comment) !!! I dont use a rangefinder. They can be an asset, but I personally practice more than enough. A good bow sling can put that wrist torque in check.
  9. Ol' Johnny Hart was a native of my hometown and a buddy of my grandpa. It's said that he based the characters on his friends. Millions?? Now that's pushin' it. Calm down Eddie! lol
  10. Any noticeable pattern or do the yotes just skin out for the next county? Just curious.
  11. Nice! How far away do your pups usually range on a yote? How's the fur lookin'?
  12. I'm gonna remain southpaw on this comparison(for scanning). The last pic shows a consistant red halo on the left. It's my personal belief that the light is sort of like a shield which the yotes/fox can't see past. The light on the right seems to have some gaps in the halo. On the other hand the "Lo 2" seems great for close quarters scanning. I usually (if I have time) switch to a small red filtered headlamp if the critter is closing in. Just enough to keep eyes illuminated so I can track them until I hit em' with the kill light.
  13. Turkeys also like to eat morels. Like I mentioned before, remember where you find morels and check the spot often because when they pop through the leaf litter, they won't last long!
  14. I'd still choose the left. Even though it doesn't carry as far, I like a softer light for my hunting area. If I were hunting more large AG fields I'd tend to reach for a brighter light. For scanning, a huge light is not needed for picking up eyes within 2-300yds. Around here there is alot of brush, trees, fences, obstacles, hedgerows in my hunting grounds, so a bright light illuminates them so much that eyes are less visible. For my gun mounted shooting light, I like bright so that I can quickly ID the animal and take the shot.
  15. Darn, Bumble Bee is my brand too. Guys, try a pinch or 2 of sugar in your tuna! MMMMMM MMMMM! Just like Gramma used to make it! I often eat tuna plain outta the can when I need a protien boost while doing strenuous work or working out. Can't beat it!
  16. Not only for hunting, but the apple trees would fare alot better from a more gradual temp increase. They all got shocked last year in my area when it warmed up nicely, apples blossomed, then bang hard frost. I didn't get a single apple outta the orchard my g-g-grandfather planted over 100 years ago. They are the most delicious apple I've ever had and bigger than store bought varieties!
  17. I noticed something a little fishy, but has since been corrected.
  18. My opinion is somewhat the opposite. The left has a wider field, but also a tighter beam. Where the right has a wider beam and a very large halo. Put that large halo downrange and you're lighting up your foreground(not good). I would choose the left. Tight field for close up but also a tight beam for reaching out. Maybe a deeper reflector on the right would give a solid red beam. Shawn, what were you using for red filters?
  19. I'm all for snow & cold for a few months, but am anticipating t-shirt days! A little more precip. during the growing season this year couldn't hurt either! I still remember my brother last year during a spotty rainshower out in the field yelling up at the sky," IS THAT ALL YOU GOT". Funny thing was it actually started raining harder! lol
  20. Funny you mentioned AXE bodywash. One evening a couple weeks ago I used it and then decided to go out coyote hunting. No time for another shower! Not 10 minutes outta the truck I had shot my first coyote ever. He ran into 30 yds before I plinked him. Wind in my face obviously! I think scent "dampeners" have their place. What dampens the scent inside your lungs? Brushing alone won't touch those hard to reach spots. Orbit won't do it. Carbon granules can't taste good. Silver is too valuable to inhale, not to mention hard on tooth enamel. Oh I can see it now, scent blocker inhalers! BreathBomb! LOL
  21. Scent what? ......Phfffft, not with the amount of trekking I do over hill and dale! It only takes a tiny bit of sweat to negate efforts of being "scent free". How much deer urine is needed to catch a deers' nose? Not much. Don't get me wrong, I do use it through season, but I don't get that crazy about it.
  22. At the very least you should have a field guide(book or human lol). It's not a good idea to put all your trust in photos. That can be dangerous as most edibles have some look alikes. There are tests you can do. Such as spore tests. This is where you place the mushroom on a piece of paper so you can see the color of the spores. Some tests call for white paper and some are better with colored paper. When trying a certain fungi for the first time, always consume just a small piece to determine if you'll have any adverse reactions. Some edibles don't agree with everyone, some can cause belly distress. There are tons of mushrooms that I won't even consider eating. The "woodstock" type that you're talking about is in the catergory of LBM(little brown mushroom). There are many mushrooms in this catergory and I wont even touch them! Back to morels, they are good at hiding and there arent boatloads out there, but they are welcome on my plate anytime! They are very particular about soil temp, moisture, so when you find some keep that spot in your memory because they will most likely be back(if conditions favor growth). Never pull fungi out of the ground as this can pull the "root" and will ruin chances for future growth. Either cut or pinch the stem above the ground.
  23. I'm right there with you! They're delicious with fresh wild turkey! I spent most of last turkey season scouring the ground, but I did manage to bag 2 longbeards! After morel season I get just as excited for chantrells and trumpets!
