  1. Well she was down a steep embankment approximately 125yds off the road next to the Delaware river. I think I recall some sort of law against the disposal of carcasses/entrials near a NYC watershed or any body of water for that matter and dragging her out would have been brutal. So my New York State bowhunters log will not include any text of me taking a game animal without the intention of recovering it. As for me not calling the DEC, that may have been the wrong descision but that's the one I made. Also, why would I call upon the 4 ECO's in my region when they could be nabbing game law violators(that we obviously have in NY)LOL!! But seriously, I enjoy my privledge to pursue game animals in NY and I will not risk losing it because of "stereotypical ethics"! Anyone ever heard of the Interstate Wildlife Violator Compact? IMO that's a good move on NY's part!http://www.dec.ny.gov/permits/29049.html
  2. sorry if I post this twice but it didn't go through(I think). But That is what I am, a hunter not God. In that case should I also be responsible for the repair cost to the vehicle that hit it?(if that is how she got injured)
  3. I realize my shortcomings in this matter and guys I appreciate the input but I didn't want to bring any more pain and suffering to her no matter how shortlived it may have been by putting an arrow through her. Hmm nature, the survival of the fittest. Well the way I look at it is that maybe GOD has a plan for her. May she rest in peace.
  4. Hi folks, while bowhunting yesterday I walked up on a doe with a broken neck. Her tounge was hanging out and I don't think she can eat because she was pretty emaciated.I could have easily harvested her but I did not. My reasoning for not harvesting that beautiful animal, while it may sound selfish or greedy is due to the license fees. I (we) pay good $$ for a chance to bag some deer. I am a NYS resident hunter and I got declined this year on both of my DMP premits, but we all know that happens from time to time. I'm not a rich man nor am I just another trophy hunter. I consider any deer(buck or doe) a trophy. While it was disheartening to just walk away,I did find myself saying to her "just lay down". That's nature, it's just too bad that nature brought with it a vehicle capable of traveling much faster than Mrs.Whitetail. On a lighter note,I hope this evening's hunt goes well. Good Hunting!!!!
  5. I just got done shooting my Jennings T-Star XL. I think it'll put one down this year!
  6. Sorry to hear of your shoulder problems. I hope you can get out hunting soon. This should be a good year, so if you have to wait a few weeks you should still be able to score. Good luck!!!
  7. Other than washing my camo all I need to do is make sure my broadheads are tuned in. Then I'll just keep an eye on the weather and decide which set-up to hunt on opening day. I'll be in Delaware co. on weekends and back home in 7r-7s during the week.
  8. Got my 1st bowhunters log today. Now just gotta' wait til' the 16th. I've been seeing lots of deer and the turkeys have eluded me thus far.
  9. I have wondered about this scenario and I may be able to put it to use! Ok say that you know where another hunter is going to be sitting approx. 250-300yds away. If a deer gets this guy's scent, what do you think that deer will do, bed down, do a 360', slink off through cover? This is a pretty general question and I know that deer aren't quite that predictable, but I just wondered about some way to use it to my advantage.
  10. Hello guys,I'm pretty new to the forum. I just sent the E-mail to participate in the Log. How long before I should expect a reply? Will they just send the log or just some info first?
  11. Hence the nickname "Whiskey Joint" LOL
  12. I do partake in 3-4 man"pushes" late in the season. While it's not my preferred method of taking a deer it can be productive. To say that,"doing deer drives isn't hunting" would be like me saying that using a scoped rifle capable of taking a deer at 2-300yds isn't hunting when I can only use a shotgun with a range of 1-120yds max. Sure I could travel to rifle zones , but so could someone wishing to get away from hunting pressure. If it's legal then so be it. I'm not trying to push anyone's buttons, but I'm just saying that all we can do is accept it and if you love hunting as much as I do, that shouldn't be too hard to do! Last year while on stand I watched a nice 10pt. get "pushed" straight to my neighbor who was just still hunting.
  13. I agree totally that booze/drugs and guns don't mix! I don't judge people because of their alcohol consumption, but there's a time and place for that(not in the woods toting a firearm)! The creator of that cartoon, the late Johnny Hart was a good friend of my grandfathers. He passed a few years ago, so that cartoon may be a little old(not that it matters). Apparently, the BC stood for Broome County where we hail from and the characters were based on people who he knew.
  14. Well I'd say just try not to be nervous. It's hunting not just killing. Be focused and calm. You're doing the right thing by asking questions. Enjoy the time you spend hunting and always be safe. Every outing is a learning experience even for veteran hunters. Every hunt will not go as planned. Try not to get discouraged. Every animal taken buck/doe, big or small is a trophy. Be patient, stay safe and have fun! Do you plan on hunting with another person/people? Public or private land? Use every resource available ie. topo/satellite maps. Try to locate deer trails to and from feeding and bedding areas. Try to get into your hunting area before daybreak so that if you do jump a deer it might not go very far since it can't see what it was that spooked it. If you know where their bedding areas are, try to stay downwind of it when entering your hunting area. One of the first things I do when I get in a stand since I don't have a range finder is to pick out spots or objects and visually judge the distance, so that if a deer moves through I'll kinda' know what range it's at.
  15. I was told by a someone who hunts near livestock that the afterbirth from the cows drive the yotes' crazy! From what I understand coyotes will eat anything from carrion to citrus fruits(leaves a pretty wide array of choices). I joined the Bark At The Moon forums last year and 1 tip I picked up was to freeze bait in a 5 gallon pail. Some people were using coon carcasses. They were mostly doing it during the winter when the "baitcicle" wouldn't melt so fast. They'd wait til' the bait was getting hit(sometimes a week or two) then hunt over it.
  16. My grandfather was a NYS falconer for years up until a few years ago when the license fees increased to like $100 annually. Those Goshawks,Coopers hawks, redtails,Kestrels are magnificent creatures and proficient hunters as well. I can remember beating the brush trying to flush bunnies for the hawks when I was 7-8 years old. We used to raise 500 bobwhite quail and 200 ringnecked pheasant every year just to feed the hawks. Then the neighbors cut holes in the flightpens, lots of quail and pheasants escaped. I do agree with the decline in population numbers of many small game animals, although the past couple of years I have noticed alot of woodcock and I've seen quite a few grouse in the past month. I do my part by hunting the heck out of the coyotes and fox after deer season. Twice last year while coyote calling I almost had a great horned owl land on my head! I jumped and waved my arms, they got about 3 feet away from sinking their talons in my skull.(then it's self defense)
  17. Thanks guys! I'll be targeting coyotes until the Oct. 16th bow opener. I can't wait!!
  18. The bolt/scope are bout' to tag him in the eyepiece!!
  19. I hunt the southern tier of the state Broome,Chenango,Tioga,Delaware
  20. I have a Rem.700ML .50cal This will be the first year that I use it exclusively. I've been shooting 100gr. of T7 pellets behind a 250gr.shockwave. It shoots well! I'm going to switch to loose powder and a heavier sabotted bullet. I recently converted it to use 209 primers and I'm very pleased with it. The #11 caps were giving me a very bad delay.
  21. I got a few on trail cams. Cant wait to zing an arrow at one.
  22. Hello all, I live/hunt/work in New York state. I am very much looking forward to bow season. The buck in my avatar is one that I'll be targeting. The pic is from a few days ago. I'll target coyotes and fox after deer gun season. I hunt deer with bow, shotgun, muzzleloader. I hunt some small game such as grouse, woodcock, rabbits, turkeys, but I've seen a decline in #'s of these animals which is part of the reason that I hunt predators, the other part is just that I love to hunt. I'm only 28 yrs old but I like to share my knowledge with newcomers as well as anyone I feel that I can help. I don't claim to know it all and don't think I ever will, but the experiences that I have afield will forever be implanted in who I am and what I strive for. I cherish this sport and my right to partake in it. I love to have fun and the camaraderie between hunters is priceless. I hope to learn all I can by using this site and pass it on too!!
