  1. Anyway, no deer sighted this morning and now frozen pellets falling on me.
  2. Sitting in a tree reading these posts and remembering all the family and friends that have passed ... And when I got down to walk a bit, I came upon this guy. He followed me the length of the pond making little mink noises at me the whole time. Wonder which of my deceased relatives/friends that was.
  3. Ahhhhhh! Last chance doe from the shooting hut at 45 yards and I missed. First miss since rifle became legal here. I figure it must have been ( insert every excuse ever used here) so it couldn’t have been my fault. Tracked it for a half mile and no sign of a hit. Gave up when the tracks went right thru my back yard... time to get the muzzleloader ready to bark.
  4. Not exactly live from the field. More like from the field to the kitchen. Made 24 lbs of jalapeño summer sausage and 6 lbs of Cajun snack stick. Smoked in the Bradley and finished in the oven.

    Beer

...and I agree, Southern Tier has fallen off in the last few years. Since my buddies son left there from being lead brewer. He’s down in NC at Foothills Brewing now and playing bluegrass music.

    Beer

Finished brewing our Troegs Perpetual IPA clone in our home brew setup and enjoying an Abandon 60 Cycle IPA. Really good stuff.
  7. From the field to the hearse to the barn. Great day with both the weather and the deer cooperating.
  8. Well, it just got better! Standing by the doe I just shot and I look up to see four more coming from the opposite direction. The freezer is full!
  9. Yep, there’s movement with the warmer weather. Doe down. Five came thru the woods and the biggest stopped here.
  10. When I (very rarely) get a wally, I carefully field dress and take it to my taxidermist. He capes it for free and that way has the cape exactly as he wants it. Says it makes his job easier and I agree. I cape all others myself along with all butchering, grinding and packing. Along with cooking and eating...
  11. The rain stopped. The ‘Cuse are looking OK and the tree stand is calling. I must go. Hoping for some late action for all sticking it out or back out.
  12. I’m thinking this feels like the right thing to do also... Go ’Cuse!
  13. Hunting on my buddies land in the hills east of Nunda today. Temps are up (22) but wind is howling. Gusting over 30. Fun to be in the big woods next to state land.
  14. Low last night was -11 in 8H. Five degrees now but 33 in the blind with the buddy heater. Just too crunchy getting here. The deer could here me coming from hillside to hillside!
  15. My thermometer is at 0 now. Crystal clear and the temp is falling. My buddy shot a doe and it died in the middle of the creek. He had to wade in to get it.... not sure I could have done that tonite.
  16. Thought about spending the afternoon still hunting around the property but the snow is way too crunchy. Sitting on a field edge hoping they start gathering in the woods to move out into the field after dark.
  17. Sitting warm, dry and out of the wind. Seeing no deer but at least I’m comfortable doing it. Almost feels wrong but I put in plenty of years sitting in trees without even a stand... just climb up, wedge a foot into a limb and hang on. Im liking this a whole lot better.
  18. Conditions are great in 8H. 26 degrees and light wind out of the SW. Just need a little cooperation from the deer.
  19. Last bow season I arrived a nice doe and she ran up the hill onto neighbors property. You have to know this woman to appreciate her. Has a large horse farm where people board their horses. I have had numerous occasions where her clients were riding their horses on my land and I had to tell them “no, this isn’t her property, did you see the posted signs?” The deer runs about 50 yards onto her property and falls. Right there in the open woods. I call her on the phone and explain the situation to her. She says “hang on, I’ll be right there “. Pulls up on her 4 wheeler and starts yelling at me about shooting “her deer”. She says there’s no way I’m going on her property to get that deer and she’s sure it’s not dead. After a few go rounds, I end by saying, “can you at least go over and pull my arrow out of your not dead yet deer? The one that’s been dead for twenty minutes now. She says she’ll call me when she finds it. I tell her good, I’ll need it for the next horse that comes on my property! Yep, lost my cool. Not good but that carcass sat there all season and made good coyote food. Sad.
  20. Crunch, crunch, crunch.... Deer? What deer? Don’t worry, I’m scent free. Here’s hoping for some deaf deer to be wandering through.
  21. Walking down my driveway to get to my stand after lunch (driveway is near 1/4 mile) and three doe, mamma and two young ones are grazing along the driveway. Only 30 yards but only 30 more to the road. Besides, my wife has asked that no one shoot this doe. She has raised twins for five years in a row. Taking them up close behind the house all summer. Need to see a buck!
  22. Very quiet here in 8H. More shots before sunrise than since but nothing close by.
  23. First shot at 6:32. Good luck all. Stay safe and “Aim small,Miss small”. Get ‘er done! Yep
