  1. Who’d a thunk it? The most definitive post on this topic comes from Al Bundy. A very good friend of mine is DEC officer and he confirms that they do not have any special investigative powers. They cannot trespass, search or anything else without observing a crime being committed or a warrant. That’s why they wait at your vehicle or in your driveway. That being said, they are very skillful at getting you to talk and walk. That way they can gather evidence in a legal way. They cannot enter any structure without permission or warrant. They cannot inspect your fridge or freezer without permission or warrant. DEC is state law enforcement and works under all the same constraints. Educate yourself and be a straight shooter, literally and figuratively.
  2. Not seeing anything from this stand. I decided to play the role of good hubby and drive my wife to Philly for a job interview. Five and a half hour drive and it’s much faster than flying...ridiculous. Hoping to be home for an evening sit but either way, scored major points with the wife. To be redeemed next week.
  3. Close but no luck. Saw three deer across the cut bean field about 250 yards away so I let out a few grunts. No response. Quit paying attention to them for five minutes and when I slowly turn to check on them, there’s a big buck heading straight towards my stand. As luck would have it, he stops about 70 yards out and is trying to see where the challenger is. This lasts several minutes before he turns 90 degrees and wanders into the swamp. Very exciting and definitely gets the blood flowing.

    Beer

A good evening of beer and music at Noble Shepherd following a cold and windy day in the stand. A Harvest IPA was a good choice tonight. Go ahead, ask what a goat impression is....
  5. This is what I wear when it gets cold and windy. Lil Buddy heater and I’m good for the day.
  6. I just left from a meeting in Linden Oaks and watched a six trot across the parking lot after a doe.
  7. My walk to my stand got interesting today. Walking along the creek when I hear something coming down the hill towards me. I crouch down and nock an arrow when a dog comes trotting out of the brush. He trots over to me and sniffs around a bit before trotting off into the brush again. Looking back up the hill I see a guy coming after the dog. I ask him what’s up and he says he and the dog are tracking a deer that was hit yesterday. I tried to talk with him but he hurried off in a different direction than the dog went. As I (slowly) processed what just happened I realized that the guy was carrying a rifle. I don’t know the particulars of tracking with a dog but I smell fish on this one. Now I’m hoping that he and his dog send some deer running my way.
  8. Just like he does every year, my neighbor is out sighting in his rifle. About 200 yards from me and parallel to the property line. Certainly helps keep me awake in my stand.

    Beer

I wish it were so. But no, company flew her in and put her up for the night for two days of interviews. On the plus side, beer and unlimited hunting for two days. Not at the same time though...

    Beer

Dinner tonite. The wife is in Boston interviewing for a new job.
  11. Built that and raised it with the help of friends. Have a lil buddy heater, two chairs, a blanket and lots of little conveniences in there. Six by eight with a two foot wide deck. Great to hunker down in when the weather gets cold and nasty. May wife calls it the deer porn shack.
  12. Just posted to the wrong thread. Oops! Anyhow, I sat out a storm line that passed thru with thunder and lightning in my shooting hut. Back out in a tree again now hoping for post storm movement.
  13. There are many nice suburban bucks in these no hunting towns. And they trash all the nice expensive suburban landscaping. He,He.
  14. Unbelievable! The rain has returned in 8H. Just had some thunder and lightning nearby. I’m calling it quits for today as the forecast says rain till 4:45.
  15. Hanging on as the wind is picking up in 8H. No rain since early morning here. Sorry to see so many getting soaked in the rain.
  16. If you want to hunt big, mature whitetails, you need to have every advantage. Young deer will walk downwind of you, yes. Mature bucks, not so much. Maybe during the peak of the rut but othwise very rarely. Big bucks don’t get that way by being careless. Killing young deer is not anywhere near the challenge that killing mature deer is. Make your choices on every aspect of the hunt but if you look at the hunters that consistently take large, mature bucks and learn from them you may just find yourself elevating your hunt to that level. Nothing wrong with hunting for meat but it’s a different strategy when you hunt the big boys.
  17. Second day in a row where the wind does a 180 about two hours before sunset. Driving me crazy. On the plus side I checked a camera nearby and saw a nice 10 here yesterday at 5:15. That would be great.
  18. My buddy just got this one. His wife already told him that there would be no taxidermy this year...

    Beer

Celebrating my doe kill tonite! Bronx Brewery Built for This NEIPA. Very tasty with a dry finish.
  20. Well, leftovers for dinner but my lovely wife is happy to see a nice doe hanging in the barn. Celebration beer. Bronx Brewery Built for This NEIPA very tasty.
  21. Doe down. Eighteen yards. Of course, I told my wife I’d be in shortly after 6:00 to take her to dinner. Better get to work.
  22. Pheasants were the first game I pursued back in 1974. We used to limit most days around the dome arena in Henrietta where Wegmans stands now. All wild birds then. Now it’s just stocked birds on state land. Still fun but definitely different.
  23. 8H and 8N. The printer failed on the next guy and there were five others waiting.

    How many

Our first year in the village of Livonia, we woke up on Nov 1 to find our yard filled with over 100 political campaign signs! Courtesy of one of my students. He went on to sing professional opera in Europe before becoming a Catholic priest. There were many grumpy neighbors the next day collecting their signs from our lawn. And we had only moved in four days before.

    How many

Zero trick or treaters. Haven’t had one for at least 15 years since the five kids my neighbor has grew up. We’re 900 ft off the road which is a mile outside the village. When we lived in the village, we would get 400 plus each year. Pouring down from the hills. It was a blast.
