What it means is ONE and only ONE hunt for the first split (typically until December when the zone closes) anywhere near this incredibly food rich and productive water when a little common sense would have left plenty of good hunting for the entire season. Meant only as an example. Stupid, slovenly and selfish. And it happens every year.

Just wanted to say thanks to all who helped make Carters Pond the waterfowl wasteland it always is after opening weekend. Not so much as a feather to be found amid the rafts of shells and wads. We do ourselves proud by busting the roost and laying waste to every wood duck we see.

The Ruffed Grouse Society has released its fall forecast. Spread the seemingly good news. New YorkNew York had good weather for nesting in May, however above-average rainfall in most of the state in June may have negatively affected nest success and chick survival, or alternatively resulted in abundant food resources for woodcock in the form of earthworms and other soil surface invertebrates, and for grouse in the form of insects, leafy plants, and berries. The drumming rate from this spring’s turkey hunter observation survey was 0.24 grouse drumming/hour, which is a 9 percent increase from last year. The spring drumming rate has shown to be a good predictor of the fall flush rate for grouse. “This would suggest that the flush rate this fall will be higher than last year,” remarked Mike Schiavone, New York Department of Environmental Conservation’s (DEC) lead upland gamebird biologist. According to Schiavone, “The breeding population index (singing males/route) for American woodcock from the singing-ground survey (coordinated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service) increased from spring 2014 to spring 2015, so we anticipate that we will see an increase in the number of birds hunters encounter this fall. It is contradictory. If it's encouraged; it's condoned. Damned semantics. As I said, I wouldn't do it but I understand it. I was thinking about a shop I once visited that had gear on its shelves that I was pretty certain didn't come from the manufacturer. It was clearly new stuff, hadn't been used. I've wondered ever since how that stuff got there and arrived at the ethical scenario I put forth here.

That's a good one. I like that. I didn't meant to suggest that theft or any other criminal enterprise is condoned, only that our "get rich or die trying" society encourages such schemes.

True enough. So much for entrepreneurial zest. While I wouldn't do this myself, I can certainly understand others doing so and wouldn't be comfortable passing judgment on them. I believe our culture at large encourages such behavior, life itself being primarily a for profit enterprise.

Valued member of the game community. If they displaced a native species or negatively impacted habitat I might change camps, but that's a long shot. There's a brief bit about this in the new issue of Grays Sporting Journal from their resident culinary contributor. Unfortunately not available on the net but worth the quick read at the newsstand.

That's the not so helpful or detailed map that prompted my post. But thanks just the same. Back to the drawing board (weak pun intended).

Does anyone know of a map that shows the waterfowl zones in more detail? Those directions on the DEC site ARE helpful and I've outlined the zones in ink on a road map but it just doesn't do it for me. Hell, I just might have to make one and digitize it.

If you can name a breed of sporting dog, there's a rescue organization dedicated to finding homes for them. Whether they were lost, abandoned, whatever, they're out there. Most are familiar with the breeds they take in and don't mind sending them to hunting homes, some even prefer it. But, buyer beware, sometimes these fellas were given up with good reason and you might be inheriting damaged goods. Meet and greets and interviews with the rescue group are always a good idea. Our greyhound was a rescue and he's worked out better than I ever could have imagined. It took some time and a lot of love but I've never owned a better dog.
