Almost looks like that tree in front of him is drying up and wilting. Did you cut that tree down from another area and put it there as a rubbing post? Good looking buck.

Nice bucks John.....good luck!

Paula if youve never been there its worth the trip. Lake George has got some breath taking views. We rented a 24' deck boat for 4 hours one day and the scenery being out on the lake was awesome. I could have just drove around for the entire time but the kids wanted to do some tubing and fishing.

Yeah got some smallmouths, largemouths, bunches of sunnies, some nice yellow perch and a 20" chain pickerel. Caught some fish in Lake George and caught some in Glen Lake also. Saw a giant bass under a floating dock on Glen Lake....he was chasing all the tiny bluegills around. He/she wouldnt take any lure or live bait. Fish had to be 5 or 6 pounds easy

Just got back from Lake George RV Park tonight. 10 days there......we had a great time. Now its time to start concentrating on bow season.

Oh ok thanks John. I thought it was like the rest of the state lands. I haven't hunted out there too many times.
-
Forgot to mention once Nov.1 hits if you want to hunt a weekend day you have to call the check station a week before to put in a reservation. If you just show up on the weekend without a reservation you can hunt only if that spot is open.
-
Virgil you can use your access pass and parking permit from Oct. 1-31 without having to check in at the check station. The Ridge check station opens up on Nov. 1 and then you have to actually go to the check station in the morning, wait in line and pick your spot. It's kinda a pain in the ass. Whatever parking spot your in allows you access to the state land up to the marked boundary lines on the same side of road your parked on. Some areas having parking on both sides of the roadways but you can't legally cross the road to hunt the opposite side. Most spots allow one vehicle and 2 hunters per vehicle. As far as Sarnoff, I have hunted there 2 times bowhunting and once during January shotgun season. As some of the fellas have said there are some real thick areas but you can find more open areas if you scout around. It seemed to me that most of the deer sign seems to be congregated around the thick spots which does make for a tough hunt. Another thing I found is that some areas have real small diameter trees (typical of some of the Pine Barren areas) which makes using a stand difficult. I use a Summit climber so I had to really look for some decent spots to use the stand. That being said, I had found some huge rubs on the property and heard of some real nice bucks being taken out there. Unfortunately the few times I hunted there I was skunked. Saw a few does and a decent 6 point but wasn't lucky enough to have a shot. Good luck if you decide to give it a try.

Great looking buck there Sam!!!!!!

Its possible it was just a brush fire. Either way it should be beneficial and generate some new growth. Is this the field by Whiskey and Rocky Point Rd.? If it is, I have seen both deer and turkeys in that field in the past.

Thanks Elmer I'll check them out. I appreciate the info. Good luck with the boat or camper.

My buddy had a similar problem with his pond. We live on Long island and he couldn't figure out what was stealing his fish. He had some ghost Koi which were over 24" long. He finally caught a heron flying down and sitting at the pond one day trying to eat some more fish. He solved the problem by putting a plastic mesh netting over the pond. I believe he bought it at the shop where he got his pond supplies. After he did that....no more herons....no more lost fish. The netting does take away the beauty of the pond a bit but he felt it was better than losing all his fish.

Ive been a life member for about 15 years now. Figured it was a good deal being I was in my late 20's. Kinda had the same experience as you guys. Calendars, books and so forth looking for money. I must be missing out on the field testing because in all these years I don't remember them sending me anything to test. I know they sent me a questionaire a few years back if I was interested in field testing. I sent it back with a"YES" but still never had anything sent to me. I got the jacket and the gun pad too for being a life member. I do like the magazine. It's funny though because last week I received an envelope in the mail from them with an inquiry if I wanted to still receive my Lifetime membership benefits because they haven't "HEARD" from me in a while. Maybe they think I kicked the bucket.....LOL. I'm supposed to contact them if I still want the benefits. There was additonal info in the envelope to see if I wanted to upgrade my Life membership to "TROPHY LIFE MEMBERSHIP" for of course.....more MONEY. Sounds to me like the NAHC is in need of some new funds and they came up with this scam. Let me upgrade to a different Life membership so I can send them more money and still see no benefits...... NOT GONNA HAPPEN.I threw the whole thing in the garbage.

Has anyone made any plans for camping trips this year? We are going up to Lake George RV park for 10 days in August. This will be our 7th year in a row going. Kids always have a great time. We might rent a boat this year on Lake George and do some fishing and tubing. Anybody have any recommendations of a good marina with decent prices? Thanks, Rich

John are those deer from upstate or on Long Island? I saw a 4 pointer the other day down in Shirley. Seems like some bucks are holding their antlers a little longer this year.

LIWater I'm looking to get off work Friday and go out on standby. I'm gonna keep an eye on the weather for the end of the week. My buddy is supposed to do the same and go with me but if he cant get off I'll PM you and let you know. Just a note..... we asked at DEC about standby out at Barcelona and the girl said they dont do standby out there so I guess it's either Rocky Point or Otis Pike.

We hunted Barcelona Neck on Tuesday. Weather was crappy on the drive there but it cleared out for the morning till early afternoon. Rain moved back in after lunch but we stuck it out all day. Too bad we had nothing to show for it. We did see 6 big deer run across in front of us as we drove in to the property and then saw a huge flock of turkeys right on the golf course( about 30). Not sure if the deer were all does but definitely didnt see any racks. We really didnt see too much action in the woods all day.One of the guys saw 5 deer together while we were hunting but had no shot. We saw another group of 5 as we were leaving right behind one of the buildings on the edge of the golf course. I did find some massive scrapes from last years rut. One scrape had to be over 6 feet wide and was dug down a good 2 inches. Someone was bowhunting it cause I found a Tinks scent bomb hanging by it. Also found tons of rubs. I might give it a shot out there during bow season. I may try one more day next week on standby if the weather looks decent.

Mike, Congrats on an awesome buck!!!! Great job on the video too. It was done with class and the way you captured your excitement made me feel like I was part of the hunt in the tree next to you. Better than any of those "canned hunt" videos that you see on Outdoor Channel with the "big TV pros". Again man way to go!!!!!!! Rich
