  1. Been fishing Chautauqua lake the last couple weekends. good thick ice and the perch are there in about 25-30 feet of water, went out off long point state park and came home with about 40 keepers. Got to watch out for the snowmobilers now, they must think they own the lake and buzz your tent.
  2. Thanks everyone for your comments. The hunting bug has now bitten him. Thanksgiving is coming and we are spending the whole week in the woods. Can't wait.
  3. I shot a 5 point about 6 years ago, was not that the leg was gone was was severly impacted by something. While butchering the deer my father and I found a .22 round lodged in it's front leg. Hmmmm, can someone say poacher!!
  4. Went out yesterday say 2 small bucks and a doe. Wind was not in my favor, seems to be the common thread this year. Back up in the tree now, actually had a some snow flakes falling this morning. Nice day but no activity yet. However I have a scrape and a couple new rubs up here.
  5. I hunt for many reasons. First is the experience of being in the woods at daybreak. Listening to the woods wake up. Watching nature do its thing. Also for the tradition, the time with my father, and the fun of just getting away. To be honest I could care less about getting a deer. I get more enjoyment watching a doe with a fawn/yearling than just blasting away at the first deer I see. Grant it there is also the fact that I love venison and that saves money on food as well. But it is more about conservation and passing down the traditions for me at this point in my life.
  6. Hey everyone. Just curious how you react to people actually asking for permission? I understand the tresspassing argument, but what about the folks that ask. Do you let them hunt or tell them to beat feet? I myself as a land owner, grant permission as long as they check in at the cabin in the morning. We have a log book that needs to be signed and a map where they put a push pin on where they are hunting. All we ask for in return is one weekend of work to maintain the property. Win win situation on both ends.
  7. I have not had time to post this, but thanks to a slow day at work on a Friday here it does. My son Brandon is 14 years old, and just like his old man has a passion for hunting. Now I was divorced 10 years ago and he lives with his mother in Virginia. It sucks but it is what it is. When he has time with me, we are all about the woods. I have taught him well. Fortunately he has family in the area that hunts as well. This year, September 25th was just like any other day here in NY. Got to work, started doing my thing. Then out of the blue, my phone rang. "DAD! I got one!!" The shaking and excitement in his voice made me laugh. I listened to his story and it was like sitting around the table at deer camp. All the things I have showed him, the safety factor, the scouting paid off. Long story short. He got a doe at 85 yards with my old trusty .243. I could have not been prouder, wish I was there but at least I have a good picture!
  8. Thats BS!! I tell ya what, the way I was raised in the woods and to be an ethical hunter, this stuff did not happen. I would say about the last 7 years is when we have seen the influx of the "all about me" people. Last year we had a ladder stand removed (stolen) by some guy using a 10k side by side atv. Well he must have thought we were not at camp and drove right by us on the way out. I just don't get it! 1. He was tresspassing. 2. He stole property. 3. He has a top of the line ATV. Go buy your own f'in treestand, they are not that expensive! I am very glad to hear you were ok. That far back in the woods you may not have gotten out. Time for the real hunters to take back the woods. Weather it be kicking people out for littering in the field to idiots like this that try crap like this. I know I will be checking my stand TONIGHT!
  9. I hunt 9X, Town of Little Genesee. My little home away from home.
  10. I think this weekend shows alot of promise, and next week as well. Did some scouting after work yesterday and found a new scrape a new rub line, and my mock scrape was tore up pretty good. Checked the trail cam and there is a couple different bucks moving through the area looking like they are on a mission. May be about time to bring out the bleat call.
  11. I have practiced at 40, but in real world scenario I would not go above 30. Furthest away I have gotten a good shot was a doe about 4 years ago and that was at 37 yards. But every other shot has been 20 yards or under.
  12. Awesome!! And he will now be hooked for life. Way to pass the tradition on to the next generation!
  13. Ok folks. This weekend I was bowhunting and had a male bear that had blue/green ear tags on it. The bear was not afraid of humans at all. I was yelling, throwing things at it and was about to take the animal but was not offered a shot. But at least I got alot of video. Contacted the local DEC bear biologist and he stated that there is an area in Ceres, NY off Bells Brook Road that is an "authorized release zone" for garbage bears. The bear that I saw was released less than 30 days ago. So I guess I will have to live with the face that there are going to be more bears in the neighborhood. Which really sucks because of the reading that I have done, an adult bear can take 10-12 fawns a year. Not very happy with the DEC right now. We put alot of time and effort into our land and to know that the herd if going to be effected like this is not good. I may be bear hunting this weekend. Oh and to make things better, the bear meat is not good for human consumption for 60 days after it has been sedated, but how are we to know that by the tag on the bear. Not that I would eat the meat anyway, which is why I do not hunt bear. I am a conservationist and use the whole animal. But I will take the bear rug at this point.
  14. One to add on this one courtesy of my father "Nobody go in the basement. I am shooting." This is because of an indoor 20 yard range for winter months.
  15. Ok folks. This weekend I was bowhunting and had a male bear that had blue/green ear tags on it. Two questions: 1. Should I contact the DEC on the sighting knowing that it is a tagged bear? 2. Does anyone know if there is a color code for these, if it is a trouble making bear I may not let it go by next time. I have some video of it on my fathers computer and will post it as soon as I get a copy of the file.
