  1. Just my opinion as an owner of a .410, I feel that a .410 slug at 50-75 yards would be adequate for deer but any further than that would be a crap shoot.
  2. Well I think that comes down to a few things. First is the varied terrain in NY from large open fields to cramped woods and brush land. Secondly I think alot of people have emotional attachments to their gun of choice.
  3. Tree stand hunting I will bring the scoped Winchester .270. If I am still hunting or stalking I will bring my Winchester .30-30 with no scope. I hunt alot of thick woods and brush so my small .30-30 comes in handy during a stalk or still hunt.
  4. Wow that is some great results. I am just north of you outside of Cobleskill. I hunt private land and I usually have 3-10 sightings a year and most of the time I see the same deer over and over.
  5. Damn where the heck do you hunt??? I dont see 49 deer in 5 years. And that is with hunting every weekend for bow through gun full day hunts. Do you hunt every single day?
  6. On the property I hunt most of the 1.5 yr olds have no brow tines. If they are lucky enough to make it to 2.5 then we start to see the brow tines. What I do feel is bad genetics is when I see the crab 3 pointers.
  7. I was certainly exaggerating a bit. If it was not within a dwelling then you are correct. However if someone trespasses into your home armed or unarmed you have the right to shoot. In fact you even have the right to shoot if someone is breaking and entering into your neighbors house. This law varies among cities and counties in Texas but for the most part the right to bear arms and the right to defend your property is taken very seriously over there. Not so much over here in NY. I know of a neighbor who had been sued by someone breaking into her home and the burglar won the lawsuit.
  8. Wow. I like my dog better than my wife sometimes. I said sometimes not all the time lol. That guy would not have made it off of my property. Seems to me the guy should have been charged with animal cruelty and trespassing. All I know is if somebody is on my property trespassing with a gun there will be serious repercussions. I lived in Texas for a while and live by there rule for trespassers: " Shoot first, ask questions later "
  9. My first was a 3 pointer and I certainly was proud of it and mounted it immediately and I have no regrets.
  10. 64 inches. That is a complete guess because I suck at estimating rack size! lol
  11. IMO that is a shoulder blade hit which explains inconsistent blood
  12. Cool video. Sucks that you could not recover. They are very tough animals. Not too mention I would not have gone into that brush with a wounded hog. They are nasty!

    hello

Welcome. Enjoy the site and good luck.
  14. I rabbit hunt my friends property in 4A but not in Long Island. Unfortunately none of my friends rabbit hunt so I usually hunt solo and without dogs so not very easy to do but I still try and get out there a few times a year. I personally love it and would like to rabbit hunt more often.
  15. If it makes you feel better I ran over my bow with my 4 wheeler. I inspected every component then shot about 20-30 shots out of it and it was like nothing every happened.
  16. Unfortunately as every year passes my time in the woods decreases and other responsibilities increase. I am hoping as I get older that will change but I cant seem to get around all my new responsibilities that prevent me from being in the woods.
  17. Thanks for those great instructions. Very helpful. Now all I have to do is find a turkey!! lol.
  18. Most of us are ready to give up where our first born sleep at night but not our secret hunting spots! lol
