  1. In Canada, the ravens are the best tracking tool going
  2. Wow - it is an island. I wonder if someone brought in some fawns and let them go. They might have crossed from NJ when the bay froze.
  3. The Marxists are still around and they are responsible for organizing these mobs, most of which are not from Ferguson.
  4. Is that a slug? Thats good but remember that your round is traveling up to the line of sight. So if you round drops 4" at 100 yds, that means you are 5" low at short range. why not adjust 1 1/4 left and 3 1/4" up so that you are good from 0 to 150 yards or so.
  5. Nice buck! I like the dark rack swamp bucks
  6. Stuck firing pin? My buddy and his son gave away their Ruger rifles after both froze on a cold opening day. Somehow, moisture got in there from condensation bringing in firearm from cold to warm inside.
  7. Long bows and recurves should be outlawed and compound bows at least restricted to mornings. Too many deer being wounded in evenings and not being found.
  8. That's right - 50 deer a day. And all that property is still there today and it is undeveloped and the livestock and crops are still there, the oak/beech/browse is still there but the does and buck aint. And difference is doe hunting. Now let me tell you something else. I recall drives where we pushed 40 to 50 deer! One was in Tioga County just north of rt 49 in Pa pushing a funnel between two pastures and the year was about 1972. Another drive was in NJ right off Rt 31 north of Spruce Run Reservoir and that was about 1976. Back then there was as many "No Doe Hunting" posters as "No Trespassing". That goes to show you what we were seeing happening to the herd.
  9. All you guys painting blue sky about deer populations might be fooling some of the younger folks here but not me. I started deer hunting in the 60's. Between sitting, still hunting, and driving we would see well over 50 deer a day and sometimes over 100. Those days are gone and the only difference is that we never shot doe.
  10. Well I can speak on stats and correlations and statistical significance - it is not rocket science. How do you determine the deer population from tag reports that might be 5 or 10 or 20% of the actual. Also, even if you did figure out the kill, how does that tell you the total population? It doesnt and dont let them tell you otherwise. They report what is needed to keep their jobs secure. How do you know the actual herd? By statistical sampling i.e. asking hunters how many deer they are seeing in an area - and according to the sampling in this forum, the population is down. PS, going what archers are seeing during the chase period prior to the rut is not an accurate sampling of the population since the bucks are ranging in a far larger area.
  11. The deer harvest numbers are the crudest of estimates - about as realistic as the "official" inflation and unemployment numbers
  12. I love the posters who talk about killing does and then they complain "Where are all the deer" Kill a doe, and that is one less buck next year and five less buck three years later and nine less buck 4 years later. Think about that next time you are in your stand.
  13. Why so high - most times 20' up means you are looking thru more foliage. I seldom need to get higher than 8' and sometimes I drop from that for a less obstruction.
  14. The reservoir WMU averages 3 buck kill per mile which is above average.
  15. A lucky cigarette has saved many a hunting and fishing trip.
  16. I wont hunt bow in the afternoon - chances too great that the anumal wont be recovered until the next day. I think the DEC should limit all day hunting to firearms or crossbow.
  17. Actually my friends use compound bows and the trick is not to drive them too hard. A lot of these drives are pushing back yards into small thick spots where they hesitate long enough to get a good shot.
  18. Arrow, That is done every year in Morris County NJ. It does not take much to bump deer out of nooks and crannies and into areas where it is safe to shoot with bow. That is the nature of suburban hunting these days.
  19. There are a few deaths every few years - accidents pure and simple but I cant recall hearing of anyone getting shot on a drive. I would not be surprised if it has happened but I dont recall of ever hearing of one and I have done a fair amount of research on the subject.
  20. I cant imagine any hunter that I have ever met that would shoot at simple movement or noise. I cant imagine any hunter getting shot if they have the orange on. Old fashioned deer drives with lots of noise (yes, banging pots and pans) makes it easy to know where the drivers are and its amazing how far ahead the deer will be. Its a great technique for hunting deer and safe - especially if the posters are in climbing stands and shooting down.
  21. My favorite memory and one of my earliest bucks was a perpendicular running shot - iron sights and close distance helped. When I hunt in Jersey we often use buckshot which makes close running shots during drives a no brainer - but always from elevated stands shooting down.
  22. you might want to figure which end of the rubline is the feeding and party area and which is the bedding area and sit downwind towards the bedding side of the rubline.
  23. Peas, Corn and apples are their favorite food and clover provides nutrition for good racks.
