I certainly wouldn't sit until 10pm just cause it was a really clear night with a big bright moon, but I would judge my start and stop time by the ambient light. Unlike you, I do not check the time of sunrise and sunset each day. In fact, yesterday was the first time I ever checked.

How many of you padlock your bowstring and cables together while traveling between your hunting spot and your home? Because that's a law too, isn't it? Unless it's in a locked case. I'm sure no one just puts it on the seat of their pickup, on a gun rack, or in the back seat of their car.

So then I would like to know, do all of you law abiding do-gooders, who never ever break or bend a single law of the land, check the weather channel, farmer's almanac, or what have you every single time you set foot in the woods, to hunt, so that you know the minute you're allowed to take that shot and the minute you've got to stop and unload?

What's that mean?

In light of my recent debacle, I have a question, scenario, whatever. So...the rules state that legal hunting hours are between sunrise and sunset, no? Today I got out of work early and was able to get in the woods by 2pm. The first thing I did was check the exact time of sunset on accuweather.com. They have sunset today scheduled to occur at 4:40pm. I watched the clock as I sat in my stand. Up until 5:18 I could very easily have clearly identified any animal that walked with in 30 yards of my stand(none did). So, you guys are telling me that at 4:40pm, your arrow comes off the string and goes back in your quiver, even though you can still see clearly and identify your target and beyond? That's it, you're done, because accuweather puts the sunset at 4:40. You are going to pass on a megladon, a #140 buck, because he came into range at 4:53? If you say that you are, I call BS and think that you are a liar. I think that much like politicians, people are going to say this but do that. Me, personally, I'm taking that shot at 4:53. It may be wrong in your eyes, I may be wrong for admitting it on a public forum or anywhere else, but I own what I do, right or wrong. I make my decisions after weighing the potential outcomes and live with the consequences. That's all. Flame suit on.

Got out of work early today. Said earlier today in another thread that I never have, nor had any interest in hunting public land. Got home and reconsidered. Instead of hunting in my back woods on my property, I figured I'd try this public piece a few miles away. Grabbed my climber and headed out. Passed 1,436 ladder stands within 500 yards of entering the woods. So, I went deep. Just saw a woman hiking. FML. She wasn't even hot. She didn't see me. We'll see how the rest of the afternoon/evening goes.

Does anyone know of a good website or resource for determining which WMU a certain town or location is in? I know of a few huntable areas that I have had difficulty determining what WMU they lie in, be it becuase they were so close to the line between two seperate WMUs or because I was not familiar with the roads and such in the area. On the DEC website they describe most of the WMUs as "the land south of Rt. X, north of Y road, and east of the Podunck Creek. I think it would be far easier if there were a website where you could enter GPS coordinates, or a town name, hit ENTER, and it would spit out what WMU that location was in.

Guys from further upstate may not realize just how it is in Northern Westchester, Putnam, etc. Here, if you take a ten minute walk in the woods, especially through briars, etc, it is almost impossible to not come out with 4-5 or several more ticks on your clothing. When you work landscaping, excavating, etc and take a walk in the woods during lunch, you are rarely in posession of permathin, or whatever, and if youre hot and sweaty, you're not putting on long sleeves, tucking your pants into your socks, and such. Im not at least.

If I took antibiotics every time I pulled a tick off of myself, Id have been on them almost non-stop for the last 20 years. I get bitten at least twice a year. Im pretty confident that I find them and remove them within a few hours, at most of the initial bite. Ive yet to contract Lymes (knock on wood) and have been tested several times, just to be safe. Many of my dogs have gotten lymes, they all bring ticks into the house, even with the Frontline. Just gotta stay on top of em.

Since I have already demonstrated my lack of knowledge when it comes to laws, rules, and regulations, let me ask another "stupid" question. I will preface said question by saying that I do not, have not, and have no intention of ever huunting state land. If a hunter leaves a ladder stand, lock-on, etc. on a tree on state land, can anyone come along and hunt out of it when it is vacant? I would imagine that it may be against regulations to leave a stand "permanently" affixed to a tree on a state land? Again, I dont know. Just curious.

I have a little 50 for my son. I think its called the Wahoo, not the make, that's the model. One of the cheapo Chinese companies made it. I got it for free off a guy who had it and couldnt get it to run. His sun had ridden it for 5-6 years, it has to be every bit of 10 years old. I gave it a little tune up and it needed and new CDI ($11 off amazon). Now it runs like new and has for 2 years. Good little machine for them to learn the basics on. Has a remote kill switch and governor. I consider it to be safe.
