I'm just reminded of a stupid teenage moment of mine where I was detained by a Fulton police officer for riding my skateboard to school. I was a dumb teenager and ultimately he put me in the back of the police car and gave me a ride to school. In the process he went through my backpack and yelled at me for not telling him i had a compass in the bag. He even gave the reasoning I could have used it as a weapon to stab him in the neck. Now that could have just been me being an annoying and dickish teenager or a jerk of a cop... With a rifle in my truck I don't want to act like I am hiding anything and I don't want to make problems for myself in the long run. Its not like I plan on getting pulled out of my truck and having it searched or anything... I guess overall the situation went through my head that if I didn't say anything and in the process of getting my info, if he looked in the back seat and saw the soft case on the floor if a cop would instinctively think bad.

One of trending videos on youtube for me today was a Concealed Carry during a traffic stop. The video was very informative and it got me to thinking about what to do during a traffic stop if I have a rifle in the back of my truck. Now its not the same as a CC weapon and its unloaded with the ammo in my glove box. I did some searches trying to find a reference to hunting rifles in a traffic stop and came across a couple videos of being stopped while out hunting which was also informative but already touched on in the hunters ed course. Just curious if anyone here has been stopped with their hunting weapons in their vehicle and did you inform the officer during the stop?

I noticed that I was walking on average of 1.5 to 2 miles on a short loop when out targeting squirrels. I decided to help burn off some of those christmas pounds I would park at the far end of the grounds and walk to the far end to start my loop. This also had the added benefit of providing new unexplored places to walk through. Now I have noticed my walking average is closer to 4.5 miles on average. While its not working out, its a start

Gotcha... although I'm curious just how much more direct you would explain it. Go with the whole "twig and berries" or lack of explanation?
-
Please tell me you are not referring to the whole "Friends are friends, pals are pals but buddies sleep together"? I only used bud because I was going to say "boss" but I didn't want anyone thinking I was saying that as an insult.

I had to shorten the video because the original was way to big to upload. Here is the hawk right after it took the second rabbit. Unfortunately part that got edited had him dropping the carcass before I got close to him. trim.ADABEA3A-26F5-412B-BF43-6C6BD19B66A5.MOV

It's all good bud, certainly no hard feelings on my end. I never even knew "outhunt" had that meaning. I always used putting OUT in front of a word to mean "perform better than".

I have some awesome pics and video of this hawk, it is very impressive. The very first time I saw him was two weeks ago. He was in a tree overhead and swooped out and took a mouse or mole (something small) that was maybe 10 yards away. Last week he was out two days in a row and beat me to two rabbits i was about to shoot at and a third I didn't even see. I would NEVER shoot a hawk. It was just an amazing thing to witness.

I never said hunting a hawk, I said OUT HUNTING a hawk. The last couple times I've been out there a hawk has taken two rabbits I was about to shoot at... so my reference is to beat the hawk this time out. Perhaps before you get all up in arms you may want to actually read instead of jumping to conclusions.

The weather report for tomorrow (Friday) shows its going to be a decent day. I for one will be out trying to out hunt a local hawk that has been a thorn in my side my last few outings. Anyone else going to spend the day out testing their skills?

NY village agrees to hire federal sharpshooters to cull deer
22Plinker replied to Uptown Redneck's topic in Deer Hunting
In all seriousness... I recently looked at the tax maps for that area trying to find landowners for some of the small ponds in the area looking for private fishing spots. There is not a lot of public land is open to gun use. The state parks and Erie Canal would still need state approval to even bring guns on their property. Plus is this passing of this agenda allowing the snipers to go on private landowners property to shoot or retrieve? -

I can't say that I am super familiar with fayetteville. I go to Green Lakes to fish as well as the Erie Canal but I am curious where these professional snipers are going to be shooting from. -

If people are NOT hunting state land... can someone tell that to the hunters in 7F? -

If I'm not mistaken Green lakes used to allow deer hunting. I'm not sure when they stopped but a few weeks ago I was researching what state parks allow hunting and came across a reference that said Green lakes no longer allows any form of hunting on the grounds. That is a serious shame since their numbers are severely overpopulated and since the old Erie Canal borders the property creating a water barrier they won't cross until frozen, the deer numbers are way out of control. -

I love that the FBI agent is quoted asking the elderly not to knock the militants on their asses -
I can agree with several of those but how in the world did Altmar not make the list? How about Red Creek? Roscoe or Livingston Manor?

Squirrel Tails and Mepps...
22Plinker replied to 22Plinker's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
I saw somewhere that if you send more than 100 they credit you the cost of straight shipping. Plus even 50 tails at an ever age of 11 cents each is $11 in mepps credit of $5.5 cash. Personally I wouldn't do it for the money but I use mepps lures for trout, pike and musky so basically 2-3 free lures for doing something I am already doing is cool. Less animal waste -
Out of curiosity, does anyone sell or trade their squirrel tails in to Mepps for cash or credit towards fishing lures? For those who are unaware of what I am talking about please check out the info: http://www.mepps.com/programs/squirrel-tail/

Absolutely! Went out several times in the last two weeks and it seems the squirrels are tucked away in their cozy little bushy tail beds... so I started tracking rabbits and spooked two deer in a young spruce grove.

There is a disclaimer on the DEC page stating that in 2016 "homework" will be required prior to attending hunters ed classes. I am not sure how that is going to affect things now that we are in 2016. My son and I both took the PA hunters ed class: https://www.hunter-ed.com/pennsylvania/?gclid=CKrFi8_Pi8oCFckWHwodZmsJCg You read through the material, takes about 6 hours. take a few quizes on each section and then take a final exam of 65 questions. You can take the final as many times as you need to pass. Once you pass you pay the $19 and change... print out a temporary certificate good for 30 days. We took our certificate to gander mountain and got our hunting license right there. We got our laminated credit card sized certificate a week later.

I have never hunted here but I stopped here this past summer to see if the small pond there was fish-able (it is not unfortunately). On the way out I was making spooky sounds as a joke and heard a coyote howl in the distance. I can't say exactly how close it was but it didn't sound way off in the distance and closer than I would like so we moved just a little quicker back to the truck. A 7'2" Abu Garcia isn't my ideal weapon of choice As a side note, while there we must have seen at least two dozen cottontail. I know its not white tail deer, but signs of life are a good thing. PS. If you like the terrain and feel of Cherry Valley, you might want to also check out Bear Swamp State Forest which is a little south east. There are two or three parking areas along the roads, snowmobile trails allow a little easier walking access and the western edge of the pond is loaded with deer tracks going to the water.

I got a gopro hero+ for christmas from my son. Have not had the chance to film any hunting or fishing videos yet but it has the option to record wide and narrow and 720 to 1080...30 and 60 fps. A good friend of mine (Big Mike 315) does fishing videos he posts on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKeEhKq39Y8Vv268M8GUzFw and he uses multiple gopro's for his videos. I believe he uses a hero 2, hero 3 and hero+. Check one out and see if the angle is to wide for your taste.

Thank you Mike Rossi. I remember hearing something similar to this down near Tully a couple years ago. The year we only got a couple inches of snow all winter. I believe it was guys shooting near Tracy Lake.
