I agree with this 100%. I had an uncle who was shot and killed by my grandfather when I was just an infant. Try dealing with that your whole life knowing that you killed your son. same story, shooting at a noise in the brush. I do think that people are numb to violence these days to an extent. Even as someone in the fire service, when I'm shown graphic images during training or see graphic things happen in real life it really changes the way you look at things.

I'm trying to find out if anyone has tried one of these scopes out yet. They have the BDC reticle which can be used to compensate for ML bullet drop. I've been considering trying it out on my TC Encore muzzleloader. Shotguns are fine so long as they don't have a pistol grip and more than 7 rounds if they are semi auto. Pumps are not affected. Tube fed .22s are also not affected. You can legally transfer them to immediate family members. Any other in state transfers have to go through an FFL.

It's not just NY it's nationwide. Unless they plan on going door to door asking for your assault rifles, they're putting more guns, ammo, and mags on the streets right now than there would've been for years to come. That's only increasing the likelihood that an incident involving an assault rifle will happen in the future. Obama won ammo salesman of the year before his first term. Now he and others are doing it again this time with anything that's scary.

I read an article a couple years back by a guy who actually had a logbook of over 400 whitetail hunts. He recorded everything including the weather conditions. The windy days had significantly less deer sightings. I had an amazing bow season last year myself. I saw deer pretty much every hunt. The windy days, not so much. Once in a while on a breezy day I'd see does milling around the edges of the corn field within the first couple rows. The guy in the article also mentioned that not one Pope and Young record buck was taken in winds greater than 15mph. The records increase gradually the less the recorded winds were. I wish I could remember where I read the article. I know they hunker down in the corn on the more windy days. My theory is that their hearing is greatly diminished when it's windy and they choose not to move much without all of their senses.

The aluminum Vipers are lighter than the primetime lite by 1 pound. I just bought a Viper SD which is 20lbs. There's a Viper that is 16 lbs but has a lower weight rating. The steel Vipers are 26 lbs. Now I have both a Viper SD and a Primetime Lite with a bent platform (see the post about the stand giving out). The Viper is constructed much, much better. The sound deadening technology of the Summit SD stands is great. All of the connections are welded on the summit. The Primetime is bolted together which leaves the possibility of things loosening or creaking.

Here are a couple shots I took of mine last year. Notice the gap under the level. I added the Summit Rapid Climb stirrups to this stand because the factory foot straps broke the very first time I used it.

Are you sure that's an Ameristep stand? It looks identical to my climber which is a Field and Stream Primetime lite, sold at Dicks. Mine is aluminum and painted black but I remember there being green ones too. I thought the Ameristeps were steel which can support more than aluminum but makes the stand weigh around 30 lbs. Either way it's probably made at the same Chinese factory. Just last year I noticed a slight bow in the platform of mine. I'm about 285 lbs before gear and it's always been a rock solid, comfortable stand. I'm planning on buying a Summit Viper SD tomorrow to replace it. The newer Summits aren't bolted together. Bolts rust, stretch, wiggle, and squeak. They're welded all the way around and made here in USA. I compared the Field and Stream that I have to a similar Summit and they're not even in the same league. I'm guessing you got your weight a little too close to the tree causing the back of the platform to slip down the tree and the back cable caught all of the weight causing it to pull up on the front of the platform. I never really thought of this being a possibility until now. I've done what you did dozens of times. I've just been real lucky with my weight being what it is. On a side note, Notice the rounded teeth on the diggers of your stand. Mine were rounded like that from the factory too. The first thing I did was take an angle grinder to those teeth and made them sharp like shark teeth. They started making these stands to appease the tree huggers and sacrifice hunter safety. I don't appreciate the DEC agreeing with this stance either .

Do you guys know if either place will take deer that are already quartered? I have it on ice in a large cooler.

I shot this 8 pointer yesterday morning. It was about 31 yards. I hit him right behind the right shoulder but didn't hit the heart. Somehow the arrow snapped off inside him and made it's way up through the left lung and stuck in the left shoulder blade. Tracking him was a nightmare since we had very heavy snow coming down and he wasn't bleeding well. He ran about 400 yards and started bedding and getting up every 5 yards. Then we found some stumbling tracks which led us to where he died in a small creek. My first buck ever. I'm usually a doe magnet.

I quartered my own deer and brought it home only to find out my vacuum sealer crapped out. Now I'm looking to just have it all made into sausage and pepper sticks. We used to use Bond's in Springville before they had the fire but I heard it hasn't been the same since. I haven't tried it since either though. I'm hoping there's somebody closer to Niagara county. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have the Contour HD camera mounted to my riser right in line with my bow stabilizer. I only attach it to the bow on nicer days with nice lighting. So far I've filmed a couple of Mama and yearling deer families roaming right under my treestand. I also filmed a little of the first snowfall for my wife who loves to see it snow cause she was back home with no snow. It's also cool if you see other game come through that most people never get to see. I have a handlebar mount for it for the mountain bike which I think will also work on a gun barrel. The problem with using it on the deer rifle is that I could be making a long shot and there's no zoom. Probably not worth the effort for the gun. I'm still tweaking the picture settings on it. It has a really nice picture but it has this flickering action like it's refreshing the picture every few seconds. I think it's a light metering setting that needs adjusting. With the Contour, the only way you can make adjustments is by hooking it to your computer.

I've been plagued with this for years. One thing I've done the last couple years is to spend some time just watching deer. I've been letting tons of deer go during the past 2 archery seasons. You'd be amazed at just how much time you usually have to make decisions and plan out shots. I was in a natural ground blind the last 2 weekends and had deer within 15 yards of me munching on apples for 10-20 minutes. I sat there and thought of how many shot opportunities I would have. Play the wind right and sit still and you will have more time then you would think when they're in the red zone. If you have a range finder you can pre-range some trees and landmarks around you so if the deer is standing there you already know the range. I think most of buck fever is making hurried shots.

I like the Hornady SST. I've been using the 150gr. until this year I tried the 165gr. Superformance and my first group at 100 yards were touching each other. I may give that a shot out hunting. I gut shot a small doe last year with the 150gr. SST from over 100 yards and she ran about 25 yards and died. It tore her up pretty good. I got lucky. No more off hand rifle shots for me.

I lived in PA for the last couple years near Scranton but we recently moved back to NY to be with family. I hunted deer and Turkey there. I got my first turkey there too. It was just loaded with turkey where I lived. I had lots of opportunities for deer with the bow but I passed up quite a few and missed a decent 8 pointer (killed a sapling instead). Gun season was like a warzone and I never saw a tail while out with the gun. I shot a doe here in NY yesterday morning. Once again it looks like the deer are all stirred up for the gun season. We haven't been seeing many.

Hello everyone. I'm new to the NY forum. I'm also a member over at Huntingpa.com. I grew up hunting in WNY about 18 years. I mostly hunt deer and turkey with bow and gun.
