  1. Tried an elk hound a few weeks ago which are supposed to be good trackers and she would veer off the beginning of the blood trail that we could follow with our eyes. When we did find the deer she showed no reaction. I've come home before with a little deer blood on my hands before and she went crazy so I know she can smell it. Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk
  2. Unfortunately no helicopter at work but I'm going to try scanning brush piles and tree tops. With all the new oil wells up near my hunting area it's brushy as all get out. Figure I've got nothing to lose trying it. Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk
  3. Just got a brilliant idea I hope. I can borrow a thermal imager from work. Anyone ever try this Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk
  4. I'm afraid that's probably true. I don't know anyone who's ever called this deer search so I couldn't begin to guess their response time. I'd assume they're probably mostly hunters as well so wouldn't expect anything during daylight Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk
  5. I've got a call into them too. Hit a good buck this morning and tracked it to a posted oil lease, was lucky enough to have a well tender on the property today and he gave me and a friend a hand looking but had no luck. He said once he was gone for the day we would have to get permission from the landowner. Luckily after calling around a bit we got official permission and called deer search around 2:45 today. And I can tell you this wait is unbearable since we heard the coyotes in the valley this morning. Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk
  6. I've been hunting different areas with a friend all season and even though were only a couple hundred yards apart normally, he sees way more deer than I do and gets way more shots. Haha and these are all spots I invited him to. He must have a pocket full of those fire balls Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk
  7. Bumped two deer walking in this morning in the dark, got just about to my stand and saw another tail but it wasn't running. Heard another deer coming and watch it walk 20 yards in front of my stand and stop when I bleat but wouldn't turn and come my way. Then I hear him grunt and follow up the hill towards the tail I saw. Another doe and fawn around 9:30 and haven't seen anything since but since I'm sitting until dark, this forum shall keep me entertained. Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk
  8. Good advice. I've done this a couple times. Even with really good shots sometimes stuff plugs the holes which is a possibility if the arrow wasn't recovered yet. Blood trails can be sparse or Peter out completely right before they go down. Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk
  9. I went to a posted line and followed along that in each direction for about 100 yards. And from the last pool I did small arcs in each direction increasing the sweep each time until I hit 4 wheeler trails which I walked up and down looking for blood on each side. It was a real bright crimson red blood and a real easy trail to follow up to the last pool. I checked leaves on shrubs and bushes that it might have passed through as well. The last puddle was starting to coagulate. Don't know if it will gel up after coming from the deer or if wound was starting to clot. Forgot to mention this was my friends buck from a couple weeks ago that we tracked from 7:45 to 3:20 before finding. Very similar scenario, I wouldn't stop looking yet. 10. I couldn't agree more. I think a lot of products out there can be great if used with moderation and within reason. Unfortunately a lot of people seem to trade off good woodsmanship skills for these products instead of using them together. And I hope I didn't come off confrontational with my comment, after I re read it I can see how it might be taken that way. Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk
  11. Haha elieve it or not there is actually an app that will show you all the planes in the sky and their departure and arrival airports and some other oddball info. Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk
  12. There are slight differences in the structure of seasons and tags between the two states though. They're not worried about antlerless numbers being impacted at all in PA but ALL antlerless licenses in PA are area specific unlike NY's bow/muzzle tags. So they are more in control of where the antlerless deer are being taken during the archery season. The article states a possible concern for too many bucks being taken pre rut and not getting a chance to breed which could also potentially reduce deer numbers. The numbers show there is no major concern with that in PA but they also have an antler restriction that NY does not. Maybe these variables mean nothing but they also may make a huge difference between how x bows would affect populations between the two different states. Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk
  13. I would like to see that. Over harvest was always my biggest concern with full inclusion. Populations were already low in my area when x bows were legalized so I didn't personally see any further drop in population nor did anyone I know. Most of the arguments I've heard either for or against inclusion are based on feelings and opinions only so I would gladly be proven wrong with the facts. Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk
  14. I've killed 2 deer that were previously wounded by other hunters. One I'm sure would have survived but the other I think would have died a slow, painful death. Both cases were also very avoidable in my opinion. The first was a spike that I shot on the third day of rifle season with a whole arrow sticking straight out the rear end. I can only assume someone took a hail Mary, Texas heart shot on the last day or so of archery just to fill a tag. That one I think would have eventually died from infection. The other was a doe that had a mushroomed bullet just under the skin in the flank. Another assumption but I'm guessing someone didn't look beyond their target and got a pass through shot on the first deer and hit the second. Or they thought they could get 2 with one shot. Either way both were unethical shots in my book. Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk
  15. Do you think this is going overboard with technology? Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk
  16. I dress in layers now and I'm usually good for a few hours but once I start getting cold my only option is to deal with it or get up and walk. Thought maybe this could help me sit still just a bit longer. Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk
  17. Wow I made it to page 10 and can go no further in one sitting. At the beginning I was swayed more away from full inclusion. For one it seemed like an "every kid gets a trophy" thing. Instead of changing your way to hunt a certain season, the season should change for you so you're not excluded. My opinion is partially out of jealousy too, I've had a lot of deer bust me while drawing that I feel wouldn't have if I just had to raise a crossbow and wait for my shot. I was also worried about this "easier" hunting causing a larger number of deer to be taken in areas with already low deer numbers. My home state of pa allowed full inclusion several years back and seems to have caused no negative impact to deer numbers. After hearing opinions on both sides and seeing no major impact from full inclusion I don't see what it could hurt to allow them. Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk
  18. I agree it would be unwise to rely completely on any electronic device. I was thinking they would make a good base layer that would help take the chill off from sitting for long periods of time. Kind of just add a heat coil into a layer I'd be wearing anyways. Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk
  19. I already own some Milwaukee 12v tools and batteries so that's why I'm leaning that direction. I would go the same route and wear it as a base layer rather than an outer shell so color doesn't really matter to me. I was just thinking that maybe seeing it in camo helped some people consider it's use for hunting and not just for work. Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk
  20. Anybody here ever try any of the Milwaukee brand heated vests or jackets? I see they're offering them in camo as well as their other colors to appeal to outdoorsmen. They sound like a pretty good idea for long, all day sits or even being able to still hunt in fewer layers and take the chill off if you decide to sit for a little while. 21. Haha any 35 fan is a friend of mine. They definitely deserve more praise than they get. Timing didn't help some of the 35s, being introduced in the 1950s and 60s with a bunch of long range magnums. A lot of writers also described several of them as great "woods" and "brush" calibers which they absolutely are but failed to mention that many are also very capable of 250 yard shots or longer at deer sized game. 22. 35 cals are awesome for deer and bear. My first bear was with a 35 rem, I've killed several deer with a pair of 358s and a 350 rem mag which is ballistically on par with the whelen. My dad has a 356 that's accounted for a couple bears and well over a dozen deer. Of all the game we've ever shot with any of the 35 cals we've only ever lost one deer due to a grazing shot. Meat damage is minimal in my dad's experience but I get a little itchy on the trigger and have a habit of hitting them in the shoulder as soon as they step into an opening. 23. Not mine but a buddy hunting with me shot this guy at 7:45 this morning. Didn't find him until 3:20. Good blood turned to no blood real quick but we didn't give up until we found it.
  24. A buddy of mine got a visit from the Dec a few years ago for something he had done wrong and ended up costing him over $1000. He suspects it was a friend who turned him in but admitted he was wrong and blames himself instead of who ever called the Dec. Hopefully your "friend" will be the same way and learn from this mistake. Sounds like a tough call for sure. I hope I never have to find out Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk
  25. I just remembered another, the cough silencer. Used to see commercials for them all the time. Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk
