Ok boys its that time of year, or almost , where we should start seeing rut activity. chasing, rubs, scrapes. Report them all here! has anyone seen anything so far? I haven't , but I have noticed the deer are starting to move more .

I just thought I'd post back on this . These two bucks I saw July 4th and 6th have not been back on camera sense , in fact, all ive had is a family of 3 raccoons, a fox and one doe that comes back every few weeks. . .thinkin I might have to move my stand :/

actually grow a lot, I think this is walking a narrow thin line.. . that paragraph u posted..i believe, is referring to liquids that you can buy that you poor on the ground or a stump or whatever, and it attracts the deer , makes them paw/lick at the ground. They have like a mineral/salt liquid, and there is also a sticky molasses type attractant that u pour on logs and stuff

I use tinks #69, not a lot of big bucks where I hunt, but ive noticed that it does bring the curious young bucks in for sure. One night hunting out of my tripod I had a scent stick with 69 out and shot a 4 point, After field dressing the deer the sun had about set and it was getting hard to see out, my friend hunting about a half mile down from me was on his way walking to meet up with me and in the field stood a nice 8 point, right next to my scent stick, of course my buddy was walking in an open field and by the time he saw the deer, it too saw him. Anyways my point is I swear by the that stuff. I definitely see more bucks now that I started using it 3 years ago.

Lobster claw is on my hit list

I see this topic is still alive. I agree with whoever said something about food plots. .. . whats the difference . . . and in my opinion a plot attracts a lot more deer than a pile of corn, apples, bait, whatever you have out there. Is it because its naturally growing? A lot of people are saying things like take time go in the woods learn the animal blah blah blah. I have done all that, and honestly I can say deer do what they do and not much changes that. I haven't noticed a big difference in the amount of pictures I get on camera with / without bait. As a matter of fact, I have had two bucks on camera before the bait, and 2 doe and a few raccoons and squirrels after bait. So why am I being slammed for this? I get it, its illegal, so is driving 65 in a 55 , but I'm pretty sure enough of us on here do that. Does it really get you to work that much quicker? 5 mins max...but we still do it because we think its giving better results. I'm really not trying to stir the pot, and I do understand the law is the law, but. .. only reason I tried this is because I wanted to see what the difference would be if any, and honestly, again, haven't noticed a positive difference after bait. -

Im not trolling, I honestly thought it was ok!! makes no sense to me why its not. Any ways I guess this officer is super lenient, and for that purpose . . I wont be sharing anymore info, as I don't want him to get in trouble , because then he will drop the book on me. Kinda mad now that I was wrong, I don't see how its a problem to lay down something for the deer so you can get them on camera to see what is around, but again I admit will be sticking my foot in my mouth on this topic going forward -

I don't know why everyone is so spicy about this. Lets face it, ALOT of other states allow baiting as an aid for hunting. . So its ridiculous that we cant here in NY anyways. Secondly, I did Edit my post and agree to put my foot in my mouth, but on a third note, after doing some reason because this now had my curiosity peaked, the law says it is strictly illegal to feed and bait DEER AND MOOSE. SO the loophole in the law is that, the bait is not out for deer or moose, they just happen to come in to the food. If the bait was there, while you were hunting, its obvious what you are doing, but you cannot be ticketed for putting bait out simply "to get stunning wildlife photos." They cant ticket you for baiting squirls, coons, rabbits , etc. that's how im interpreting what the ECO told me -

It was definitely an ECO officer, and as you said, im sure he knows the law better than anyone else here. you can ABSOLUTELY bait deer for camera purposes. If you can find the written law that says otherwise, please copy and paste it. But when an ECO pulls me out of a tree stand while im hunting and then explains the law to me, what is ok what is not ok, Im going to trust what he says. And yes, im in New York. Again, if it wasn't legal, stores wouldn't be allowed to sell al lthe different baits. .and EVERY single store that has a sporting goods section has the stuff. Again, you can argue this until you are blue in the face, but I lived it, so I know for a fact im right. Edit: Nevermind. . someone did post the law. Well .. . lol this guy is the ECO in my area so if he tells me its ok for camera purposes, im going to continue to do it for camera purposes since he will be the one enforcing the law in my area. but for the purpose of this post, I will humbly admit defeat. -

honestly, this is 100% legal , as long as the bait is removed 2 weeks before season. I know this for a fact because I was nailed by Encon last year for hunting over a pile of apples. Ok guys, don't bash me, my buddy and I had a hot spot behind an old abandoned house, between two highways. . and the apples were the only way to bring the deer in. I'm not proud of it., Any ways . .the encon officer was a pretty cool guy. . he took my dunkin donuts, bought me a coffee , explained the entire law of baiting to me, told me that he didn't agree with it. Then he slapped me with a ticket that cost me $200. Not sure if you guys know what "Runnings" is but they just opened up a store in my area a couple years ago and they are now selling the huge feeders, right here in upstate new York. If it wasn't legal to have them at some point in of the year, they wouldn't sell them. As long as u remove the food, bait, salt lick, whatever it is 2 weeks before you hunt it, you are in the clear! -
Thanks for all the input guys, I have been checking the cams Every 2 weeks since I saw these bucks, and they haven't appeared once again, just 2 other does. It has been oppressively hot though and I imagine this limits their movement. I also put down some Acorn feed/attractant to see what I can bring in, and still they haven't come back

this is in upstate new York, Montgomery county. Thanks for the input guys!

Any idea how big these guys will be? Im thinking the one in the day time picture looks like he will stay a small six, but the other one .. could this be a potential 8? Also. . .im guessing these are both young bucks.. maybe 2 years old .. opinions/comments?

Hey all, I am seeking some advise. I just recently started my preseason scouting and already have a couple of nice bucks on camera. Ive yet to shoot a good buck and though ive always scouted hard, I never seem to be in the right time come deer season. This season ive moved my stand and so far I'm feeling good about the move, but how can i make sure the deer im seeing stay in the area?!?! Im really looking to get one of these bucks during bow season this year , so I'm curious, when is a good time to start using doe in heat scents or start putting some fake buck scrapes nearby? Or is that even a good technique?!!? Any advice that helps me get my first wall mounter would be great!!! thanks!

good god what part of new york is this in??

ahh dude! there are thousands of deer in Long island! you should get a permit and go over there to hunt! welcome!

Hi friends! I have been hunting since I was 16 years old and im now 30 (ugh I hate reminding myself of that ) I grew up in, and still live and hunt in Montgomery county in upstate New York. I've only tagged a few doe and a couple spike horns in my time in the woods, but only became a really serious hunter in the past few years. I'm joining these forums in hopes that I can turn to some knowledgable hunters on here to finally get the edge to bag a mounter, and eventually share my harvests with you all. I started pre season scouting so far, picked out a new spot for my tree stand and have two bucks in velvet scoping the area out. I'm hopeful at best, but if any of you could share any techniques with me to ensure these bucks stick around for early season bow and through the rut, that would be most helpful!! Nice to meet you all and thanks for letting me into the community!
