HAh, funny u ask, I have a nice 10 pointer on cam this year and im almost certain its him. . . there is a scar on his left shoulder , right on the bone, and then looks like it exits top center of his back . . . lemme check the pictures I posted in the trail cam section and see if I can blow it up and show you

I agree, it is early, however I've only seriously bow hunted for the past two years and for about the first two weeks of bow season the woods are pretty active, and then you come into the "October lull" where it seems like the only thing moving through the woods is squirrels. Then of course end of October through early November is the time to go get em!

I did shoot a 180 lb doe, it was actually the first "big deer" I ever shot, she was huge!
-
I disagree with you. It is not a cop out by saying this. The reason the "big buck states" are that is because number of people per square foot of wooded area. When it comes down to it, New York just doesn't have enough land available, compared to the amount of people that live in this state. You may argue and say well what about the Adirondacks? Ok , have you ever hunted the Adirondacks... or the catskills even? the landscape makes it incredibly hard to hunt, sure there are some monsters living in those areas, but they are rarely bagged. In the plains states there is MUCH more uninhabited land and it is all FLAT, so you are much more likely to see the larger deer. I 100% agree that it is unrealistic to ever see bucks in NY like in Illinois or ohio or iowa, BUT you are right, by managing we can swing the scale in the other direction and start seeing much better bucks.

I shot them last year, fly way off from the field points. . . I also wounded and didn't kill a real nice buck from 20 yards. . .not really sure what happened, i may have yanked the shot a lil, but they do fly very inconsistant

summer and fall deer movement patterns are completely different. Your point is completely invalid

awesome pics, neat little critters they are.

I think Crossbows need to be outlawed again. Its such an advantage over regular bow hunting, I just don't think its fair for guys to be out there in prime time with a weapon that's practically a rifle that shoots arrows. Idk, just my opinion. Its much more fun and more difficult to get them 45 yards or closer so you can smack em with a real bow.

so will it effect the deer movement?
-
So, I have been seeing some great movement on my cameras over the past few weeks, and I really credit that to the mild weather we have been having. They are forecasting mid - high 80,s this weekend and into the middle of next week, at that point we are ONE WEEK from opening day. Is this a reason for concern as far as opening day goes? I'm praying for the mild weather to come back by the first... heres to hopin!

How would you react to this situation? (Hunting permission)
Iluvracks1359 replied to regulat0r's topic in Deer Hunting
If I were you, I would have went in and put a tree stand up that day.. lol. but honestly you HAVE to hunt it. Just be careful that his idiot is not going to drive the woods with 15 of his friends . . . He does not have the right to tell you not to hunt property that isn't even his own. Honestly, you probably shouldn't have gone to his house in the first place, and if you ran into him in the woods you could have just said, well, they gave me permission, and he could have taken it up with the owners. Now u have a conundrum. but 250 acres is a lot and I feel it shouldn't be an issue! good luck! -
Thanks! I will def post if I get him!!

no no no , this deer is mine, ive yet to kill a buck worth bragging about. I need this to keep my sanity at the end of the year

Funny you say this could be a blessing in disguise. Last year I got kicked off the land ive hunted since I was 16 years old. The land was a part of property that belonged to a house that was abandoned for years. The dude bought the house and all the land that went with it and I found out when he took my trail camera off the tree I had it on and replaced it with a posted sign with his name and phone number. (He did give my camera back) Anyways, this forced me to start looking for new land, and last year, although I didn't get a harvest, I saw more bucks than I have ever seen in a year in my new spot , and this year I have beauty 10 point there ( which also may be a deer I missed with the bow last year). Very exciting! sometimes change is not a bad thing. The best thing about this land I found is that it is state land , nestled in what you wouldn't really go searching for a hunting area, and I kind of found it by accident, So I have it all to myself, whereas my other land I hunted I was always competing with several other hunters. So anyways, keep looking , find beautiful property and ask permission if you have to. Good luck!

Guys, the chase is on!!! I was hunting out near Oneonta this past weekend, saw 4 bucks ( two little guys, one 6 pointer and a monster, all out of range) all grunting and chasing does. The stand I sat is in a hedgerow with a grass field behind me and in front of me . .I was surrounded by 15 deer at one point.. however I'm new to bow hunting and I am not comfortable shooting over 40 yards.. the closest I had was 51 yards with a ton of branches in the way.. but it was really exciting!!!

any activity in the 4's or 6's?

It is huntable, u have to get a special permit to get on the land, but yea ive never seen a hunter on it

ugh . . .hate to see that, I'm so jealous of you guys down there. . . .its LOADED with deer. Are you familiar with the Kensico reservoir? I used to work as an environmental technician on that lake doing bird hazing. So we would drive boats around the lake and scare off the gulls on the water (haha yes, that's a real job.) Any ways, we also did land surveys around the lake and ive never EVER seen as many mature bucks in my life Also these deer never get human interaction, so there was several occasions where these deer would stop 30-40 yards In front of me and not run away. Man I wish I had my bow. Also so a MONSTER standing on the lakes edge one day... he was a bit more weary than the other bucks I had seen, but there was more points than I could count, I chalked up up to be a 12-16 pointer...unbelievable deer. any ways, back to the rut chat :), I'm going to check my cameras this morning
