Did some scouting this past weekend, still over a foot of snow on the ground in the woods there, thank god my uncle let me borrow his snow shoes. HAHA. Seems very promising, spooked 15 deer 5 minutes into scouting, set some cameras, didn't even cover half of the property though, there was just too much snow! Also found a really nice double latter stand that was from one of my cousins friends, whom they told to take the stand out about 5 years or so ago, and he never did, so its mine now! haha. Even if the guy comes back looking for it, im probably gunna offer him some money, save him the trouble of taking it out and and moving it, because its a big heavy stand.

This absolutely baffles me. . . how and why does this happen? I always thought it was related to how mild the winter is, I remember ..I think it was 5 years ago we had that extremely mild winter, we got hardly any snow, aside from that freak Halloween storm, I was also downstate in Westchester county that year and I saw multiple bucks in late March sporting their full racks, but it made more sense to me since the winter was super mild. This year we had a bout of extreme cold, and a significant amount of snow, its strange that any of the bucks would have kept their antlers

Did I mention there is also about 10 acres, maybe more, that is an apple orchard as well? Yes I am turkey hunting their this spring, I was gunna head up this weekend and set trail cams

lol this would never "fly" over in my house :(:( I had to claw tooth and nail with my wife just to get my buck mounted this year. . . . sigh

Hey guys, Im going to be hunting new land this fall, its 100 acres, with a nice 5 acre pond nestled in the center of it. How would you go about scouting a new property for the first time?
-
I never seem to stop thinking about it. Every time I go for a drive im constantly checking woods and fields to see deer or turkey. Now that spring is (slowly) approaching, I am starting to watch turkey hunting videos, and soon ill be getting my calls out and annoying my wife with practice. She knows it, I never stop thinking about hunting.

Only 124 Days till Spring Turkey Season!
Iluvracks1359 replied to buffalojay83's topic in Turkey Hunting
I'm super excited, but after deer season ends, the wait for turkey seems to DRAGGGG, especially in mid april when you see the gobblers out strutting and you are like why cant I just go get them now!!! I had the opportunity to hunt on Easter last year on an air field under a special permit .. . omg how easy it was. Once may 1st comes around its much tougher. . . and then by mid may u really need to change your tactics up... but either way, I cant wait!! -
Agreed, hunting season does seem to be WAYY too long, and we need antler restrictions STATEWIDE.

Its funny, I haven't seen ANYTHING since the end of southern rifle season. .. its pretty odd, because I almost always see them in the fields around me during muzzleloader, but nothing.
-
Honestly, IDK, that's why I asked. If its something like, yuou get in the stand and 5 minutes deer are running over you, like a video game, theres nothing fun to me about that, that's not hunting, its shooting. But say they tell you, well you have a 75% chance. . . I think theres days wehre I hunt that I go out in the woods feeling I have a 75% chance, So in that case, I wouldn't mind it, especially bow hunting, because finding the deer is the first challenge, whacking them with the bow is the 2nd.

Thanks for all the input guys! From the sounds of it, most everyone has negative input on this.

So i saw this article about a guy who shot a 31 point buck somewhere in new York, I don't remember what it said, but the story read that the guy moved into the area and it was his first year hunting there or something and he kills this slammer. Any ways,. the story came back and it turns out he killed this deer on canned hunt, tall tine whitetails in Norwich new York. So, curious, I went to the website, and their prices are outrageous, but they GUARENTEE a shot at whatever class buck u want. I don't remember all the pricing but it was $2,000 for a 120-130 class buck and like 6300 for a 190+ class buck. Personally, I don't have the money to spend 65 hundo on a deer hunt. But the 2000 I could swing. Have any of you guys tried this? Is it worth it? Does it even feel like hunting? I mean if they GUARENTEE u a shot at the buck you want . . . clearly its not going to feel challenging like going out in your own woods and watching a deer for months or whatever. Anyways, opinions?

Yep, fell victimto this last year during turkey season, I'll never hunt after a full moon again for turkeys lol

Thank you, im glad someone gets me. Also, i would like to rip into all that' wrong with alot of what people say on here.. but I dont.. just sayin.

Let us know how u make out today!!

I don't even know why we are discussing this, everyone on here is saying it, and even the dog warden said it. shoot them, plain and simple, uve tried to end this peacefully on more than one occasion, you should have ZERO tolerance for this. Lead poisoning will eliminate the problem, plain and simple.

I am in Montgomery county ive had cameras out all over the place, never saw a "giant". This is the biggest buck ive ever seen in my area, and he was behind my house 2 days in a row, since then . .. gone lol

So I Did the devil face in Jest, I have no hard feelings towards this guy, i just thought it was a funny way to hide his identity. Also, i know it wasn' MY deer, i would just like to think of it that way . In all reality is love to own my own hundred acres or so, that is completely secluded from other woods, that way I can watch deer grow and manage the heard. Hunting around here kind of blows because that deer, or the buck I shot is kind of considered a slammer around here. I see so many huge bucks shot in New York, but they just don' get like that here because no one lets em grow

So, as many of you know, I was had what appeared to be a nice, 9, possibly 10 point on camera, and this also happened to be a deer that I had wounded during bow season last year. I watched him since July, and was certain that I would run into him, but the spot I was hunting seems to kind of be where the deer were going to get away from all of the action, so when the rut turned on, they got up and out of there, and he crossed the main road into a much bigger patch of woods, and someone else took my deer :(. Ive attached the picture, and as you can see, the man who harvested the deer was none other than Satan himself. Terrible. LOL but in all serious, I don't know the guy, and I don't think its right posting a picture of him on social media, so I blocked his face. This buck looks like he got a bit beat up, hes missing a few tines, but still, I wish I could have made the harvest.

so who had luck this weekend? I think im starting to agree with those that said a full moon limits daytime movement. Two days in a row myself and a friend of mine sat a soy bean field that you are almost guaranteed to see AT LEAST a doe in day light hours, given the right weather conditions. However, neither of us saw anything, and there was fresh tracks all over the field, so my assumption is they were coming out after dark, with much better visibility in the field due to the SUPER MOON. That's my input at least.

Killed while walking her dogs at 5:30, that's dark

I just read this today!!! So crazy! Some ppl do not deserve to be in the woods!! Absolutely unreal. -
I have to say that I think hunting pressure is limiting the herd sizes. I used to see 20-30 deer out across from my parents house every fall through winter when I was a kid. Then someone decided to lease the land adjacent to it to a hunting club and on opening day it sounds like a legit war zone in there. Ever since then the numbers have dropped considerably. While I drive the sled through there and see deer tracks everywhere during the winter, I still feel that the hunting pressure has certainly dropped the herd size considerably, and this is pretty much the case anywhere there is a large population of hunters. Also, if people were more selective when shooting bucks, you would start seeing more 8's anmd 10s on the property.

I actually lost a deer because of this exact scenario the day afte open season last year. I shot a 10 point buck, there was snow on the ground, I followed its tracks for 75 yards to a hedgerow and not one spec of blood. My gun had also jammed on me so I was super frusturated about that, and I decided to go home and try to see if I could figure out what was wrong with my gun, and I had assumed I missed. I got a text the next day from my friend who I had told the story to, with a picture of a guy who lives nearby sitting next to my ten point. They thought the deer was jacked, and called encon and encon took it. that would have been my first notable buck kill, and to this day, telling the story makes me sick to my stomach. The Deer died about 40 yards on the other side of the hedgerow that I stopped at. . . I talked to the guy that found him and said there was only one spot of blood right before where the deer collapsed, but his heart had been blown to shreds. . . Next time im in this scenario, im walking until I find a dead deer , or reach an impassable obstacle.
