  1. I think its the story of everyone's life, this year, however, I have 100 acres to hunt, all to myself, and while I know its not enough land to keep the bucks in during the rut, they should be primarily in there pre rut, and im hoping to start managing this land a little bit, let the lil guys go, and hopefully get some giants in there. Although, that's not stopping the guys on the adjacent properties from shooting the bucks I worked so hard to grow and manage. .. such is life in NY .
  2. Last night after a softball game I had a chat with my buddy who has been hunting here in upstate NY for about 20 years, and has also had the opportunity to hunt out west in ohio, and Illinois I believe, a few times. He made an interesting comment to me last night, and I think he hit the nail on the head. Here is the gist of what he said: In NY a buck that makes it to 3 years old makes it to 3 years old because he is SMART, hes figured out a way to avoid hunters, thus, the older deer get here in NY, the harder they are to hunt. Bucks out west however, make it to 3 years old, most likely because they were passed up one or a few times, so they haven't had the fear instilled in them yet, and a 3 or 4 year old buck out west, basically behaves like a 1.5 year old buck in NY. This is why NY hunters are the BEST hunters, because taking a big buck in NY, means you have studied the deer, and outsmarted a buck that was smarter than the rest. thoughts?
  3. officer this giant buck charged me, I took him out of self protection sir!!!
  4. I cant give up the bow, so id have to let the gun go. I just really got into bow hunting and my confidence with the bow is at an all time high, so theres no way I can give it up now
  5. Heres a trail cam picture of another deer, not super far from where this shed was found, meet medusa
  6. I agree with everything I'm seeing on here, the clearing should allow for some new growth and should HELP. All of the activity may initially scare the deer off, so MAYBE this year might not be as good, but the next few years will be great, again because of all the new browse that will be growing in. As far as this year goes, I still wouldn't be too worried, like some of the guys have said, some deer have learned to treat the chainsaw almost as a dinner bell, so they may hang around, and move in once the construction is over with. Good luck!!
  7. GOOD info, what I have heard is that a lot of the land owners down there DO consider the deer a nuisance.. so if it is an area where you can bow hunt, I would say don't be afraid to knock on doors and ask permission? So all of Nassau is 0 hunting whatsoever...not even open to bow?
  8. NOBODY hunts down there... the population is so out of control. The deer are literally desteoying all of the undergrowth in what little forested land exists down there. My suggestion is do yourself some research snd get down there!! Lol..i plan on it!
  9. Check out this shed my buddies friend found while walking through the woods in a state park in long island. My buddy works for an environmental agency down there, and they do some deer culling because the population is so out of control, ive seen so many pics of HUGE bucks, ive started to think the big buck states have NOTHING on long island bucks. Look at the mass of this shed. . .this deer must be an absolute monster, (also notice the kicker off of the g3)
  10. i don't think the ending SUCKED, I mean, I think anyone whos watched it is going to need some serious therapy, due to the emotional roll coaster it puts you through. "how long have you been standing there?" ONE HOUR
  11. Has anyone here seen it yet?!!? at least some of you must have!!! I went last night and holy crappppp I need to discuss this with everyone I can. lol
  12. Barkley to the Giants!!! How can anyone argue this pick? This is a guy that makes an entire team better. Look at how well Dallas played with Zeke, and look at how terrible they looked without him. This was no brainer in my honest opinion. I truly think the giants can grab Rudolph tonight, and sitting him behind Eli for two years could turn out to be better than anyone could imagine. However, ive seen a few mentions in this post, maybe Davis Webb is the guy.... I guess we will see
  13. why did you guys have to post this . . I sold my 2003 Cobra 3 years ago, not because I wanted to, but because I was in a tight spot with money, and of course if I just held out a few months longer I would have never got rid of her. I miss her so
  14. I have put more time into scouting this year than any other, I finally picked out the bird that I want to be my victim on opening day. .. heres to hoping I smoke him! What time should we be sitting in our spot with the decoys out?
  15. "With the second overall pick in the 2018 draft, the New York Giants have selected. . . . . . . . . .Saquon Barkley, Running back Penn State!!" Say it, Feel it, BELIEVE it. I will cry if this doesn't happen lol
  16. Great story, just reading it almost got me to tears, but I am pretty emotional myself, lol. Anyways, that stinks you are losing the property, you'll have to find a new tree to make more memories at
  17. great info everyone, thanks for the replies, I definitely think im going to go out this Saturday morning and tuck in and listen to sum gobbles, and perhaps I will buy a crow call or owl hooter now too. thanks ev1!
  18. Does anyone here keep notes from season to season of things like when and where they make a harvest, weather and temps and times of harvests? Sightings, etc etc? As every year goes by I find myself becoming more and more involved in hunting and I was thinking keeping a notebook of all of these things could be a good way to become more successful.
  19. the horn on your moped?!?! lmao now ive heard it all.
  20. what county are you located in? I feel the same about my area, last year, even as warm as it was, the winter flocks weren't really broken up until the third week of April, and I found that they were strutting really hard at that time. I got the chance to hunt before season started last year, under a special permit on a private airplane strip, and mid April those birds would have come in to literally anything. hunted the same spot the second weekend of season and the toms hung up 70 yards out, but still managed to bring 3 jakes in. couple weeks makes a big difference with these birds
  21. To go out and try to roost birds this weekend? I have been seeing absolutely ZERO strutting action in the areas I would normally be seeing birds strut this time of year. I wanted to go out this Saturday morning and see if I can hear them gobbling in the trees,. but is it too soon for that? Is the information I gather this weekend going to change by May 1st? Also wanted to throw another question in here. What is your guys real opinion on a owl hooter, is it a must have on all turkey hunts? I was thinking of picking one up this year, especially since im on a new property and have no idea where the birds are roosting. Furthermore, when is the right time to use this call when trying to locate, right before sun up? while its still dark? As always thanks ahead of time for any input
  22. I am in Montgomery county, still have not seen any strutting, as far as I have seen all the males are still together, no hens grouped in yet
  23. do you use the paid version or free?
  24. Does anyone use this app? I downloaded it last year just before I killed my buck. found it pretty neat, im able to mark off GPS points of where my stands are, hot spots, rubs, scrapes, etc. Its basically like they took google earth and added a bunch of features to it for hunters. There is also a paid version which adds features, has anyone tried this, and if so, is it worth it? I really like the app just for the basic features, I can pull up a map and find what im looking for quite easily.
