  1. Also thought id add this, as rut relates to shedding, i have a 3d archery target that got taken out, first time end of Oct. Next time after late season. I think it was Dec 18 I was up there last to see it stand, went up a month or so later to check cards it was down, and hit every bit as hard as the first time Sent from my SM-S820L using Tapatalk
  2. So far this year, couldn't tell ya how many miles I walked this year, well over 20 hours in, found a freshy yesterday though( 2nd one down on the right) the shed on the lower left is from last year and is the same buck as the one above, which was my first shed of the year, Sent from my SM-S820L using Tapatalk
  3. damn 10, I guess it helps if you hook a bigger one, I expect to be hooking average size fish, and will take the extra play for smaller fish vs backbone for the occasional big one, although that can lead to upset when the big one bites Sent from my SM-S820L using Tapatalk
  4. Habitat, and there's one critter out there that causes more loss of habitat than anything else, and that's us people. Too bad there wasn't higher authority governing the real nuisance. Sent from my SM-S820L using Tapatalk
  5. well then those cucumbers are cultivated by you, itd be a little different if u were killing the snail that you see eating wild berries because u want the berries for yourself, my point in the original post was the notion the we our somehow helping the animals in our actions and preserving the ecosystem when we are the largest impact on them, ( not specifically hunters but human beings) my belief is that the ecosystem balances itself which it does, to people's standards, not so much. To many deer in the suburbs so cops can lay em down at a bait pile, to many people is the real issue. Gotta label coyote as nuisance critters, because they kill all the deer then when deer numbers get out of control in an area, due to lack of predation we have to enact "management" efforts to do something, ridiculous. The #1 loss of wildlife and our more prized "Game animals" is loss habitat Sent from my SM-S820L using Tapatalk
  6. well an 8wt would be a fly rod, (you probably knew that already), gonna need an appropriate size reel, and line, I'd go with weight forward (WF) IN 8 WT. WF line is easier for casting. 8 imo is a bit heavy for steelies, but hey it can double as a salmon rod. Decide if you want to get into the fly fishing because it's an expensive hobby, especially if u purchase flies, and after all that spending, it's no easy task to manuever. Between getting the line out, mending for a clean drift, and actually hooking and landing a fish is quite difficult Sent from my SM-S820L using Tapatalk
  7. Occasionally when it's a little warmer. some years ago when I first got into steelhead I went a hell of alot, but occaisional hookups 1-2, or no fish days got old. Breaking ice off the rod tip, feet numb, waiting for the float to go down, got old, although they are fun when you hook into them. Go to those creeks in the early spring for smallies THATS fun. I was literally catching fish about every cast my brother too, more than one double hookup, every fish being near 3 lb, best was a chunky 4lb'er, and the smallmouth are quite the acrobatic fighter like steelhead Sent from my SM-S820L using Tapatalk
  8. Was talking with my brother about something like this last night. I think with the exception of WMA's, unique areas, and any refuge or preserve, camping in public lands is allowed, state parks I believe may have fees. But lots of public land available to camp, my goal is to get so far out to camp hardly a soul has set foot on the rugged terrain (at least in recent years). The public land near me is flat land swamps, no camping (WMA) and for the most part the closest large chunk of public around, drawing lots of ppl from nearby populated areas.Unless u go find a spot hidden miles in the cattails, u seldom find a secluded spot. 9. I heard this 2 years ago, to be in place last year, didnt happen. Any validity to this or just rumors flying Sent from my SM-S820L using Tapatalk
  10. Well I won't be frantically be looking for links on your behalf what i know about CWD is pretty much the general knowledge out there from articles in magazines, my butchering book goes into it also, and my understanding is its spread through bodily fluids. Now let's just say this WASN'T the case, what then does the urine ban do. There's a reason for everythin, so what is it, just to oppress the hunters freedom, another way to fine u, or maybe they want control of the whitetail urine market!! Not that it matters, people will do what they want, they ban it, u get it on amazon, whose gonna stop u, the ECO waiting in his car for u to get back. Interesting even when given a reasonable explanation people throw it back and call it ludicrous because it doesnt support how they do things, imo if your using piss, take it from the deer u kill, can't go wrong there. I know I'm sorry it doesn't come prepackaged and labelled but I doubt that stuff in store is largely composed of urine, a bunch of fillers like anything else Sent from my SM-S820L using Tapatalk
  11. Well what'd u wanna do? Steelhead rods will be long to keep line off the water, but good luck working a jerk bait easily with a 10' rod. Reels, keep it simple, sounds like your just looking for a general setup, a lot of the hardcore guys have reels/rods setup for each setup (crankbait/spinnerbait, finesse, ect) forget all that. Medium weight rod will serve your purpose, 6'6" -7. I prefer 6'6" being on the shore. Although 7' is better for drifting, the creeks I fish usually aren't that wide and can keep line off the water reasonably with a 6'6"" or 7'. I have to laugh at the guys who got a free spool 12' rod bc that's what the steelheaders on tv got. Well when u fish a stream 30 yards wide it doesn't need to be that long to keep line off the water, and running your drift 20 ft past you before u recast isn't anything that couldn't be done with a spinning combo. Reels, my brother had the president was a good smooth reel, although I didnt like how the handle attatched. Generally I don't look at gear ratio, I will slow or speed up my retrieve as needed and don't choose my reel from that. the # of bearings, how smooth, and the grip, is how i decide. Also smooth drag, I HATE rough drag systems, but like anything, if u dont cheap out this usually isnt an issue. With a reel just make sure u get the right size for your weight rod, they usually have few sizes of each reel variety, whether a light, medium or heavy setup. If your willing to spend 100 on a reel I can't imagine youd be dissapointed, I hardly spend over 50 for a good general reel, of notable brand. I couldn't tell you the variety of species I caught with my general setup. I think setup is stressed a lot in the fishing shows as being crucial, which it is important but not practical for the once in awhile or weekend fishermen to have 6 different rod/reel combos. Just bc KVD fishes cranks/spinners on his 7'6" MH 7:2:1 gear ratio baitcast with 30lb braid, doesn't mean you can't fish cranks/ spinners with your M 6'6" spinning combo with mono, BUT u will have a harder time fishing these baits and bringing fish in, and can lose them easier. Which equates to money in pro fisherman standards, and why they go into setup so much, that and the fact their sponsored by those companies Sent from my SM-S820L using Tapatalk
  12. no Just think it's funny someone talking about helping the deer out while talking down urine bans. " I DON'T care about the CWD whooey I want to spritz my mock scrape with "dominant buck piss" Sent from my SM-S820L using Tapatalk
  13. Gotta love the minset, gotta help them through the winter so I can kill them next fall. Gotta take out the yotes to help the deer. Between us hunters and vehicles, I bet we take at least twice as as many deer as coyotes. Self serving mindset Sent from my SM-S820L using Tapatalk
  14. U in the southernteir? Sent from my SM-S820L using Tapatalk
  15. Hey, also here in wny, u north or in southern teir. By this time last year I had found quite a bit. I know year to year they shed roughly about the same time but have found 2 so far, not for lack of effort. I know I put in well over 10 mi. so far. Anyway when do u typically see deer in the counties u hunt, shed. I'm in Erie/Niagara area, it would seem S. Tier deer would shed earlier with winter hitting faster and harder down there Sent from my SM-S820L using Tapatalk
