New York Land and Lakes
Single_shot replied to BigGuyNY's topic in Land For Sale, Lease, and Requests
I second that...that's who I dealt with. Pete Martino was the sales executive I had and he was spot on. -
Just my 2cents here but.....my dad used his 22-250 for many years on WT and it never did him wrong. He had alot of other calibers in the closet, but he felt very confident with it,which makes a big difference. I'm open to the caliber as a deer cartridge just from his high success with it. It isn't a brush gun for sure,i'm just saying what worked very well for him. He was'nt a poke and hope shooter either,he prided himself on one shot kills. Whatever you choose, you do best with a rifle/caliber you are most comfortable with.

Brush hogged fields

Too quick reply to both, the fingers point south/south west. There better not be any road hunting on this road....I own it, (not a right of way). Dual gated private road. Like Mr.T once said..."I pitty tha foo". Only land owners beyond me are (allowed) don't want it to sound that way, geez sorry, really ...maybe permitted sounds more better? (sorry to any owners beyond me,my deepest apology) to enter. Before me is all private (about 50ac that I and 1 other, have written permission(ask me) to hunt. We are close to 1/2 mile from main road. Not really far...but far enough. The bigger fields, are about 95% full sun though. The fingers do not get full sun...to guess I would say noon to early/late sun. EDIT: wording -
Not sure how big as I have only seen a pic or 2 of it...it's up stream a few hundred yrds. It's creating no major problems, other than creating more marsh. There are other soft woods for it to eat though, instead of a cherry tree that's 12" across, lol. Is this pic of trees from a beaver or porky? They are a few feet away from the cherry. I'm leaning toward porky....as they are completely girdled from ground up to about 2 1/2'...but not sure right now what kind of tree they are and didn't pay attention when taking pics.

Haha...a sight to see I'm sure. They like to "sharpen" the fangs on nice cherry trees....this one is firewood now. No idea other than that,as it is a larger tree than I have seen them gnaw on.

The fingers I have marked, don't show up because of the angle(the one on the right hand side shows well). At the beginning of the 1st post here, you can see the pic of the left side finger,it shows from front angle and then from the back....the center finger is the same size or bigger. I would rather trees from a NY nursery as that is where the property is. When I get up in the spring,I'm going to video the area and will post it to the tube, will make things alot easier here, lol. EDIT: Also I will get measurements of the areas. -
whether it is active or not you can not disturb the dam or hut. The DEC will not remove it but in some instances a county , town or village will because of a danger to infrastructure such as a road or culvert. The beaver is around our state now like rats and the DEC has no desire to live trap them out and transplant. They will EASILY give you a permit to remove the dam....take the beaver and remove the dam and hut. It is easier if there is justification like a flooding of access into your property of such. The permit is good for the year from Jan to Jan and must be renewed. When I said the permit allows you to take the beaver it will specify how. Mine was any method...shoot....with lights at night....trap out of season...basically just kill them. Your regional DEC office will help you with the permit Very good information, thank you much.

I'm assuming you mean a main paved road, the answer is about a half mile. The road im driving on is our private entrance road. The longest field area is maybe 200yrds or so.There are 3 fingers that run in betwixt the spruce and pine that are quite long, guessing 200FT +/- and vary in width maybe 20-30FT? Just going from my mind, have not measured anything yet. The field shown to the left is a good size field, going to say 1ac. The front right side is bigger and L shaped with 3 fingers. The pic you see here is not showing them mowed, but they are very well groomed hay type fielsd at this time. All the measurements are just guessed and approx. -
When beaver build a hut and dam a creek/river up,and in some instances screw things up,then either move on,get killed etc., do you have to leave the hut/dam there? Can or will DEC remove it for you? Just curious as to what can or cannot be done.
-
You got that right.....we have it over noodles as well,we even throw in some green beans, yellow beans, peas, corn anything. It's all good. Over homemade bread toast is a big one for us as well.

Your facebook link is a no-go.

I too can't wait to be able to get back in to the cabin and start where I left off. Will be nice to see if the 2 apple trees faired well and can't wait to see the yard again and the outside fire and the critters and,and,and.....

OK...for the tree way of thinking, what would be the better way to go? Apple,Pear.....and or? How about bushes? For deer/turkey etc.? I'm trying to get ideas from ALL aspects of this so I can do it ONE time and do it correctly. So ALL input is wise here. If anyone feels that I have'nt listened, believe me,,,,,I truely am. I read each and every one's comments more than 1 time. I'm good with a home garden..lol , but I think this is different and respect all comment. I thank everyone who comments here. -
I had a big one run along the stone wall just below the cabin last spring, was a good size one too. A friend near my house in Pa has a family of them right by his house, they watch them from the porch, really cool to see. EDIT: I hear NY has a reporting link of some sort for them?

I agree 100%. The 308 is a fine cal. Every deer I hit went down in a heep with mine.If the rifle has no issues and shoots fine, then good deal IMHO.
-
Geepers....I can't imagine having to use a SG only for deer. Not putting it down in any way ,shape or form now. Just saying, seems it would make the cheese more binding ,in a way. To me personally,it's the same as ML.....only you(ML) can't(re-) load as fast. LOL Seems like a good challenge.

Just had to share this with you. Nice, nice fisher. http://www.gunandgame.com/forums/pennsylvania/117212-fishers.html Hope it's ok to share it. If not,Lord I appologize.

That thought crossed my mind.....maybe plant a small orchard of mixed trees, fruit and other. Would take a few years to really do anything though. -
Brush hogged fields

Actually it's a field that's been brush hogged probably 2x a year for years and would probably make one heck of a hay field. As far as deer, there are about 8 that call the immediate area home. I suppose I should talk to a farmer or 2 and see if anyone has interest first. There's no way I can prepare this large of an area by hand. -
Gonna try that one. That sounds real good.

Well, a little of both if possible, attraction and overall better habitat for the deer through the winter, maybe something for the turkeys too. Early season ML to early rifle. Not sure I could mow it unless using a brush hog was ok. It really don't have to be the whole field either,I mean,it could be many smaller sections could'nt it? Say 20'x20' sqauares? Maybe one type of planting in one and a different in another? Or just plant it all corn and then winter wheat? -
This is what I have to work with. There's more than what the pics show because of the knolls etc. Would it be ok if the areas were plowed/disc and then plant? Do I have to use a weed killer, would cost a fortune. What should I plant in full sun. I would rather something I just need to plant 1 time vs every year. Should I plant all or just some of it. Should I leave it alone? I was also thinking that maybe I could have a local farmer come and plant corn if he feels it's worth it to him.....and then leave some standing for the rest of the year,or split the area up a little etc. There's already a bunch of good apple trees that produce along the hedge row/stone wall and they are real good eating green apples. Just not sure if I should do food plot/plots or let it be? Any suggestions are appreciated. This would also be something that woild only be watered by mother nature.
