Live From The Woods 2023-2024 Edition

A friend of my son had asked him if we would take him deer hunting some day. His friend Danny had never been deer hunting and wanted to get a deer. We took Danny out this morning with us. It was his first time deer hunting and my son put him in a 2 man ground blind with him to teach him. In the first hour Danny was able to bag a big doe. The joy and exhilaration Danny displayed was priceless. My son taught him how to field dress a deer and we helped drag her out. Take a new hunter hunting with you when you can. We couldn't be happier for him.- 620 replies

Here's how to keep your fingers warm. Get a good insulated hand warmer muff and put a couple of Hot Hands hand warmers inside. Then wear a pair of light gloves and keep your hands inside the muff until you need to take them out. The hand warmer muff goes around your waist with a strap and will not be in your way. I tried everything else under the sun and this was the only thing that really worked. As a popular saying goes "try it you'll like it." Good luck.

Can I use crossbow during regular gun season?
CharlieNY replied to luberhill's topic in General Chit Chat
Simple answer: Yes. Here is the link with info: https://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/68802.html -
I bought an Arris heated vest a couple of years ago and it really makes a big difference on cold days. You can set the heat on different warming levels and different zones on the front and rear of the vest. The battery is rechargeable and will last a long time and you can buy an additional battery and place it in your pocket. I wear the vest under an insulated hunting parka. In addition to layering with insulated clothing I wear a warm neck gaiter and facemask on cold days and have found they are a great help as you do not want to leave bare skin exposed to the cold.

Let's all be sure to thank our veterans today for their service and sacrifice they gave to our country. Better yet pick up a veteran's restaurant check today if you can. Thank you to all our veterans and our current service members.

My son scored on a big wide 6 pt with 10 minutes of shooting time left. He only uses a compound bow and made a perfect double lung shot. We waited an hour and only had to follow the blood trail about 45 yds to make the recovery. And of course old Dad had to help drag him out lol.- 620 replies

Black would be best. Here is a link to give you some good information. https://banksoutdoors.com/dressing-properly-for-hunting-in-a-blind/#:~:text=Many experienced hunters have recommended, and sweatpants in a blind.

Al thank you for the valuable information. For reference here is another pic of Waylon and the birds that I took in my blind right after Waylon brought the birds to me.

Went out this morning solo with my dog Waylon. Shot a pair of big Canada geese that came in perfectly to my small spread of decoys. My dog Waylon loves to pose with the birds and for reference Waylon weighs 70 lbs. which will give you an idea of the size of the birds. I quit after that as there was no way I was going to carry a third bird out lol.

Cook tough meat in a pressure cooker to make it tender. The pressure in the cooker breaks down the connective tissue in the meat which makes it tough and chewy. When done correctly the meat can be sliced with a fork only.

This is a still photo taken from one of my videos showing 2 geese immediately after they were shot simultaneously and falling to the ground. You can see the feathers from the hits.

Yes indeed Al and thank you.

Today was the first of 2 special waterfowl hunt days for veterans and active duty military personnel in the Western zone. My son and his Supervisor are both Army veterans and went out this morning. I went along to video the hunt and handle my son's dog Gunner. They both had a great hunt and limited out. Another day to remember.

My son and I have been using one for many years and it is an essential part of our field dressing kits. We have found that once you insert it twist it one and a half times but no more for best results. Then pull steady but slowly without stopping. Though it is obviously over priced for a piece of plastic, it does work very well and will last a lifetime.
-
Yes we did Al and Waylon and Gunner could not have been any happier. My son and I have much to be thankful for.
-
This morning was our last hunt of the early season. We scored on 18 birds today. It was Gunner's turn today and at 20 months old he did a spectacular job. Gunner found and retrieved 3 of the birds which fell into the standing corn and we probably would have never found all of them without him. You can't say enough good about a good hunting dog.
-
Waylon doing his thing this morning and showing his goose blood covered head after many retrieves. Had to wash his head after the hunt lol.
-
Back out this morning. Today we had the pleasure of bringing along 2 new goose hunters and it was a shoot em up day. Total take was 35 birds. Pic is of my son and me and of course my dog Waylon. It is a great reward bringing out new hunters and having them enjoy a good hunt with us.

Full inclusion of crossbow during bow season if 60 or older.
CharlieNY replied to First-light's topic in CrossBow Hunting
This is the form to obtain an unmodified crossbow permit during regular archery season for hunters with a disability. -
Our morning take today. As you can see it was Waylon's turn today.
-
You're right Al. We are out again this morning and we've got another pile going.
-
Out again this morning. It was Gunner's turn today and he shined retrieving every bird from the water. We are having a great time this September.
-
Thank you Al. I thought the same but I am definitely biased lol.

Waylon on his way back to me with one of the birds. Such a pretty sight.
