  1. Out for the afternoon hunt with my friend “Old Brian” trying to get it done! Round balls, spit patches, buckskins and wool! Encouraged as I saw fresh sign for the first time in a long time! If all goes according to plan, we will be frying some tenderloins in the skillet for dinner! Good luck to those who are out and congratulations to those who have harvested!!
  2. Thought I would mix it up and try hunting from “The Tower of Power”... not cold enough to fire up the stove. Good luck to those out in the field!
  3. A selfbow is made from wood and can either be designed as a longbow or steam/heat bent into a recurve. Selfbows can be backed with sinew, rawhide, linen, etc. to help strengthen them but some backings may not “period correct”. A traditional bow is laminated with wood, glass, etc. and can either be a longbow or recurve in design. The difference between a recurve and a longbow is that the bow string touches the belly of the limb tips on a recurve.
  4. Trying...Creek was iced over so couldn’t canoe to where I had hoped to hunt today...lots of squirrel tracks!
  5. Not any more, I pulled them. I have permission to hunt my adjacent property...that’s where the drag was. I don’t believe anyone else has permission. I spoke to someone I saw here last year and explained the situation and where I hunt...pretty sure it’s the same person I saw hunting from one of my other blinds. I’ll probably follow the drag marks to his house after my hunt and reintroduce myself.
  6. Fingers crossed! I was not to pleased to see drag marks pass by my blind...private property. Such is life.
  7. I got very lucky...I was inspecting the area where I “hit” the deer ...I followed his tracks for about 20 yards and saw some disturbed soil on the side of a hill...I lined the hole up with where I was standing when I made the shot and where I found hair, did some digging and found the slug buried deep in the ground. Trying to make light of missing this buck, I told my wife “at least I saved us $500 for a mount”.
  8. Canoed to my ground blind and was just getting situated when I saw a large buck running off...I was still standing and was able to stop him at about 75 yards. He stopped broadside in the open...the shot felt good but unfortunately I only gave him a hair cut...found the sabot. Fun season, got lots of hunting in although I didn’t see many deer after opening week of gun. I had a great archery season and looking forward to getting out with my flinty. Good luck!
  9. Congratulations Brian!! All that time you put in finally paid off! Glad Michael was able join you with the harvest!!
  10. Worth their weight in gold! I just need to gain a few inches around the waist and figure out how to loose a few inches in length! Most of my wool is Filson. The Filson double machinaw jacket and Filson bibs were wedding gifts my wife and I treated ourselves to...they are still our go-to outerwear for cold weather. (Text me if you decide to thin out your Filson jackets or vests ;-)
  11. Last day before I switch things up! Seeing all those deer harvested fuels my desire to keep at it! Thanks and good luck!
  12. I’m with you guys...clocks a ticking! Trying again...short hunt this morning. Wind is goofing me up a bit...hopefully something picks up on the scent trail I left leaving my blind after yesterday’s PM hunt. Really want to draw good blood with this point...it definitely racked up some serious hours in the woods!! Good Luck!!
  13. Live from my underground ground blind...first time hunting from in it this year. Yesterday PM hunt I broke my ~2-week dry spell of not seeing a deer...and only a couple on my cameras over the same time period. I was hunting behind a berm when I saw a deer heading my way at about 50yds...it was a basket rack...I stopped him around 30 yds as he started heading away from me...I tried making some mouth calls to get him in closer but he lost interest and walked away. 30 yds is a bit outside my “comfort zone” with my selfbow and stone point (confident at 20’ish). Glad I saw the deer and hoping another deer walks my way this afternoon! Good luck!
  14. ...my friend sent this the other day ...10 ft away in a park in NJ...they allow archery hunting there...
  15. 50 cal Hawken style flintlock with spit patch and round ball wearing my loin cloth! Cannot wait!!
  16. My wife told me that I would be living there...I didn’t argue
  17. Finished another few courses on the sugar shack wall...brought my hunting gear with me and paddled my canoe up the creek to my ground blind... hopefully a different outcome from this morning’s hunt (I.e., that I see a deer)!
  18. Starting to feel like groundhogs day...out with my brother...hope one of us has a shot this morning! Very frosty!
  19. Zippo so far...not even my coyote neighbor....although I swear I can smell that stink dog!
  20. Out for the PM hunt...set up in a different spot...after I got dug in, I noticed 10 feet behind me a coyote also dug in...hard to tell from the photo but I could easily crawl into it’s lair. Hopefully he minds his own business until I finish my hunt (and recover my deer if I get lucky enough to have one come within range). Congrats to those who harvested recently and good luck to those out in the field!
  21. My friend shot this buck yesterday at my parents house...crazy long brow tines! ...maybe I’m hunting in the wrong spot??
