The deadline just passed for the 2021 PA Elk drawing.  It's worth it in the future to apply and start accumulating points.  Hey, ya never know!

I just looked that up. For around $36 you can apply for all 3 seasons. Odds get better every year. I'm in next year. Doesn't Tennessee have a season also?

One of my partners  shot a TC Encore  on my 2004 trip and shot a 6x5 that was bigger than my 6x6.. he used the 385 Great Plains bullet which shot well in his rifle...

We could have gone 3 for 3 but  after we had two big bulls on the ground, my other buddy was not going to settle for anything less than a wallhanger, so he passed on several smaller bulls.. It wasn't like we needed any more meat..

BTW, this was  unguided DIY...But I must admit unit 76  was ( and still may be)  unique at that time, with a high population of elk , lots of accessable public land, and relatively few tags issued...  Other places in CO you might see an orange vest behind every bush...I saw more MOOSE than I saw hunters....Could have shot a couple of nice Shiras bulls if I had a tag....

How many preference points did you guys have? I was limited this year.

I wasn't smart enough to start collecting points while we talked about it over the years. I chose the area because it statistically was decent and it was close to 100% chance on drawing a tag.

All I did was mention if this thread gets a few more pages I'll allow myself to drop some cash on a new coat. Little did I know getting the hunting crew on board would derail the thread this much. I did make a mental note on that though.

Some interesting info on muzzle loaders in this thread now. I kept and keep going back and forth on one. I've decided to let it simmer another year and see if I want one of those or to upgrade my bow. I'll most likely end up getting a new bow because the only time I would use a ML is for one week up north ( 5 days tops depending on weather ), and I don't mind using the bow up there so...........

I use my tc encore . I love it. In the last 5-10  years I've shot more deer with it than my rifle by far. I use it up here during the mz season and carry it at  Letchworth during firearms season.

My vintage Hawken shot lights out with 80 grains  of 3F 777....  With  a tang mounted peep sight I could shoot  2-3 inch groups at 100 from the bench.. Dropped like a rock beyond  125 yards or so, but with a little Kentucky windage I could still hit a 20 pound propane tank at 175...Ended up killing my 6x6 bull at about 15 yards...

I also ordered a peep sight today..;)

I'm not interested in getting sucked into this stupid ass political conversation, but I do have some input on full cal.  50  bullets that are Colorado legal...

IF they are still in business, try  NoExcuses  460 grain conicals....  Colorado legal ( less than 1"  long at .50 cal)  easy loading and very accurate  in my TC Hawken .50 cal....

I may have a few left that I would mail you if you want to  PM  me...Worked great on my  2004 Colorado bull..Never saw a more perfect mushroom in my life..

    Thank you for the offer!

That is great news.. I ordered that exact bullet today as well as the thor in 300 gr (I think). I will find something that works.

    How much powder?

I have already spent more money on bullets than I have since owning my muzzleoader ~20 years ago..

That sounds so cool! Wishing you safe travels and best of luck out there!!

Thanks. One of the reasons I wanted to go mid September was that it is the middle of the rut. Once I hear one bugle in the wild my trip is worth it , regardless of what happens next.. Neither one of us has a set schedule to return.  It may be that we have to stay an extra week or so to eat enough pounds of elk to be able to carry it all out..

When is the trip? I'm envious!

DIY trip . We have a cabin rented for a week in the White River national forest. 2 of us . We can use SxS right from cabin. Plan is to drive on these rds /trails as far as we can and then hike from there. We are going to be equipped to overnight as well.  I'm picturing us finding a spot we would rather stay the night then hike back out.. We have talked about it for years. Decided at 50 we better get on it..lol

The videos are from the SD card. I've heard rumors that the next model is supposed to be able to transmit video, but don't hold me to it. I like the Tactacams, because you can set them up to take pics and video during same trigger event. I have mine set to take a 3 pic burst, then immediately roll right into a 30 sec video. Get the best of both worlds, I guess!

Sweet. I think I changed my settings to do the same thing.. I just moved them last week.

Nice, I also built two ladder stands that need to get put out. I have a 3rd still in the box but not sure what I’m doing there yet. All I know for sure is i already put in for October 1st off

Talking about ladder stands. I bought 2 to put on our new property last year and never did. Now , we sold the land and I will have to find another place..lol

You and me both. I changed out my batteries on my 2 cell cams last week, and set them up on a couple mock scrapes.

Did you try adjusting the powder charge? My old TC ThunderHawk likes 90 grains of 777. Will get a solid two inch group at 100 yards. If I go to 100 grains the group opens up to about four inches. Wouldn't think 10 grains would make that much difference? But it does with that gun.

We did . We tried 80,90,100, and 110.

    Even 70 by accident. oops

Hmmm... Then I really can't help.

Elk hunting in CO with a smoke pole. That sound like a great trip, good luck out there.

Thanks. It will be a 1st for me... between my friend and I ,we shot more than 50 rounds through our guns yesterday.(yes. Alot of cleaning too.lol) 4 different bullets and they all sucked. At 1st we thought it was just us not being accustomed to iron sights. So I put the scope back on my gun and the best we shot was a 4" group at 70yds..

Search goes on for a better bullet.
