  1. Has anyone had any weird encounters with deer this season. On four encounters this season I have walked up on deer with in 10 to 15 yards and they didn't run. Some just stood there while I walked closer not bothered in the least. One with my son walking to his stand we say a doe about 60 yards away so we just froze and she started to walk toward us. When she walked broadside she just stared at us and continued walking slowly away. My son said that it would not be fair to shoot such a dopy deer, I agreed didn't feel like we were hunting. Another time I had to toss a stick to get them to move, whats up with that? My neighbor was cutting part of his field on his riding mower as I was walking on the dirt road to talk to him and there was a distance of 25 yards between us and his friendly spike walked between us. Never ran stood there momentarily then just walked off. Must be something in the water, weird deer in my area.
  2. I killed a bear in 1993 and the bear biologist came and removed a tooth. It took about 2 years to get my letter from the DEC. They aged him at 1 3/4 yes old and he weighed 234#. Haven't seen one during hunting since.
  3. Been a good season for me shot a 5pt buck on opening day and shot a nice doe Saturday late in the day. Can't ask for anything more I am very grateful first to be able to get out and hunt and be successful to boot. Life is good, Have a great Christmas everyone.
  4. Eddie, got to get me one of those sleds. Bust my butt getting the deer on the back of my quad, some times I have to hoist them up in a tree and back under them and lower them on the quad. Sled looks like the best way to get them out of the woods. Thanks for the idea.Dave
  5. Joe, that's your problem you think you have all the answers and everyone else is ill informed. What does the oncology ward have to do with this thread? You are reading too much into this topic if you want to talk oncology start another thread don't hijack this one to suite your self.
  6. Joe, is this philosophy 101? Why are you making this so complicated? I think we all get it!!
  7. Don't worry if it bit you it probably died of sarcasm.
  8. Again Steve you hit the nail on the head. If we don't have feelings for what we have just killed then there is something wrong and we are heartless killers. I always reflect and appreciate any deer I have been lucky to kill.
  9. Good response Steve great answer and I agree. I have those emotions every deer season.
  10. To the judgmental members on this site here we go again . We are not living up to your ethical standards , and no we don't need a biological study on the issue if deer feel pain or not. IMO they do! That was not the intent of the original question posed by WOOLY.
  11. I have read many times that we all have a right to our own opinion so why do some have a problem with the opinions of slitting the throat of a deer under certain conditions? How one feels about this is a personal feeling that is neither right or wrong. There are lessons learned from every aspect of hunting and if this is one of them. But some people just want to tell everyone that their opinions don't count but theirs does. No one knows how a deer really feels and can't speak for them. Dave 6x6 I agree with you on this one.
  12. Hector it happens too with rabbit hunting. You get to them and they are still alive so you just ring their necks.
  13. Great topic hard to digest at times but it's a reality of hunting that goes un said.
  14. I have done it a few times . The most recent was 3 years ago during bow season. Not something I wanted to do but had to do it. Was having a problem pulling my bow back so didn't bow hunt till the last week of bow season. Could only pull the bow back once and doing it the second to third time was very difficult. To make a long story short this is what happened, a nice 6 pt buck approached from the back of my ladder stand walking steady with it's head down. Never saw me, stopped about 15 feet from my stand with all my strength I pulled the bow back and let her fly , hit the buck in the neck shoulder area and he dropped in his tracks. He was trashing around on the ground so I knocked another arrow couldn't pull the bow back, waited a few minutes and tried again shot and clipped his ear. Deer still trashing around well finally shot my last two arrows and missed the deer. Now no more arrows the deer still alive, surprised I didn't scare him to death. All my arrows were on the ground some now under the deer from all his moving around. So I got out of my ladder stand walked over to the deer stepped on his rack and slit his throat. All the time apologizing to this beautiful deer , i surely didn't want it to end this was.

    The Drag

Lets see how you feel when you are in your sixties. Life can change a lot from 50's to your 60's. If it's between using a Atv to get to your hunting spot and bring your deer out of the woods or not being able to hunt at all , what would you choose? Health issues change at a moments notice and we have to adjust. And an ATV might make the difference.

    The Drag

I hunt by myself a lot so the avt sure comes in handy when you have to get the deer out of the woods by yourself. When I was younger I use to drag them out but I am in my 60ies now and the ATV is how I get them out now.

Eddie I also use my atv to bring out logs I have cut that are hard to get to. Makes life a lot easier no matter how old you are.
  18. Have to agree with the other responders . Would never have driven 5 hours to cover his mistake. Would have told him if you want it come and get it and you owe me $10 to cover cost of the permit. Next time if you get a DMP don't tell anyone. Once things cool down I would tell the FNL just how I felt about being used in his illegal activity. Personally I would have told him tough shit, handle it your self you shot it not me.
  19. Can you use scent to attract bear like anise oil? Is it legal or not?
  20. Not far from the Delaware river, what town do you hunt near?
  21. Live from my TV room, won't be up till next Friday and will hunt till Monday evening. Hope to fill my DMP. Good luck to all.

    The Drag

Been using my ATV for many years .Park about 100 yards from my stand so the drag isn't to bad all down hill to the logging road. even easier when there is snow on the ground. Plus tying up the deer on the ATV doesn't beat the crap out of the deer on the way out of the woods. It's worth the money.
