  1. I am having a heck of a time finding anything on discharging anything in the county or any of its towns/villages. All I find are DEC hunting regulations. Sad to say, I would not ask any local leo as most likely have no idea or even give you a bum steer. Will probably have pop into the local village hall to see if they have any documentation.
  2. i am a local in rockland, my gf has had coyotes & black bears dining in her backyard on the garbage cans in Pomona. To ward them off when she goes to put out the trash, I've given her my last seasons sailboat air horn cans. I will have to look up the rules of discharging an air rifle in rockland and it's various town laws as I have a .50 cal dragon claw air rifle I can use. If you need assistance I can also use my 60# compound bow.
  3. have only been out there 2 seasons & never did see any sign, though i've run into other turkey hunters (but they say they've not seen anything either). i'll be out there again this season. ha! i see more turkeys on the drive over there than in the forest. the other night, commuting home i called out to this tom (yes, i'm still learning how to use the mouth calls).
  4. getting the bows ready & dusted off a few diaphragm mouth calls. started practicing calling & getting funny looks around the data center timely post as on the commute early this morning, local traffic was stopped due to a dozen Toms crossing the road. this verifies a spot where I suspect they roost. too bad though as no hunting since its a residential neighborhood. I can follow the power lines into the woods, look for sign & see if I can call any in just for fun.
  5. quaker boy calls fit me better. i've got about 1/2 dozen calls, mostly primos (dome, dual reed, triple reed) but only one quaker boy dual reed. i noticed as i was timming down the calls, the qb u-shapped metal piece is much narrower that the wider primos. with the qb its easier (for me) to simulate the purring vs the primos calls. on a side note: after a day of calling, i rinse them in a glass of water & a bit of mouthwash. then place them on a paper napkin to dry over night. the red tape primos calls bleed out the red coloring on the paper napkin, while the grey or white tape type leaves no visible ink on the paper (at least i can't see any). i'm sure the red ink is non toxic unlike the old red used in m&m's. ymmv
  6. that stinks. i dont need to puchase projectiles as i cast my own boolits
  7. no luck (again) while hunting sterling forest, i never did see any animals out in the woods. plenty of tracks in the snow but nothing else other than a woodpecker laughing at me (thats what they sound like to me). soon it will be time for me to put away the guns & break out the fishing poles. sterling forest is having an educational hike, i think i will take advantage of it - might give me some pointers for the next hunt. http://nysparks.com/events/event.aspx?e=74-7404.0
  8. people should be free to express their beliefs... i believe i'll have another drink. /levity off
  9. Just back from Cabelas out in Harrisburg, PA; same as the Dicks in Nyack, NY; shelves bare except for those odd calibers. Asked one worker when the next shipment is due, he shrugged his shoulders & said he didn't know. Went upstairs for lunch then shopped around some more & asked a different worker. He said they get shipments every day & put it all out on the shelves. I was there at 10am this morning & the shelves were already bare. I was lucky enough to get the last 5rnd mag for my M&P 15 though. (Ha! got nothing to put in it though).
  10. she's a .50cal & your suspicions are correct it was about 36-46f degrees that day. the next day I dry fired the remaining air (by the way, manual says that's how to degas) & it seemed to function normally. I filled it to 3k psi & shot a round ball into a stack of 50 old magazines/catalogs with an iron skillet behind from 5yds. Went throught about 15 of them. Seems like all is well & I'm happy about that but now it stinks that I can only use her when it 50f+ degrees out.
  11. down, but not out. spent wednesday at the range to sight in my coyote rig. what a great day took about 30 shots then pfffffft, dragon claw just quits for the day. she can take on air & hold pressure but it just won't fire the projectile. i'm still trying to figure out what went wrong. of course, the weather improved once the gun quit working
  12. dang, picked a great day to take off heading to the range to sight in the rifles, hope it clears up more.
  13. I've got to sight in a few rifles & shotguns plus try out some new handloads made with some projectiles I cast. Once I get 'em all dialed in I'd like to join.
  14. LOL! I invited my gf to go fishing once, we never caught anything that day. She teases me when we're out with friends about it. I remind her that it's called 'fishing' not 'catching'. Though she's 'hooked' now that she caught a few mahi when we were down in Miami. Sorry to stray off topic, I cannot add more than what's already been said. I find that studying & researching the prey & its' habits to be the most interesting part. Then apply what you've learned out in the field.
  15. forcast for some snow friday night, should be good to track for coyotes saturday morning.
  16. happy hunting! when you get a chance - post a follow-up report?
  17. dang, there are 'yotes?! doubt i'd get as close as 50yds to one though
  18. Hmmm, so THAT'S why the shelves are bare of ammo - the ones that will fail the background checks are out hoarding before it goes into effect... /sarcasm off
  19. I believe it is statewide. I'm at the Dicks in the Palisades Center, Nyack. Nothing on the shelves except shotgun birdshot, slugs & muzzle loader ammo. Some .243 & fewer .308. I'm tempted to purchase some .308 just to see what the new process is going to be like.
  20. Yeah, I freaked out too. But I kept reading & searching the 'net to get a better understanding of how the new laws apply to me. In my small collection of rifles, only 1 is semiauto. All the others are either pump or lever action. I only need to register the semiauto due to the new inclusion of the pistol grip.
  21. Keep checking. Sadly, from what I've been reading & re-reading; I believe NYC residents are the lucky ones that still require the permit.
  22. not my work, i just read it & figure it's something to chew on... http://www.nj.com/times-opinion/index.ssf/2013/01/opinion_government_has_no_righ.html#incart_river_default
