SteveNY
Until recently I never considered putting the time or effort into food plots, but as of late I am curious about them. I know nothing about them and I am looking for some info. My property is about 6 acres, bordering a tract of state land that is about 50 square acres, which connects to another tract of state land that is nearly 15,000 acres. All of this land is mostly mature, dense, hardwoods with an occasional swamp here and there. Not many food sources besides a couple of apple trees and what ever the oaks decide to drop that year. I recently did some logging on my property and have made some big clearings and started to flirt with the idea of a food plot. The soil where I am is EXTREMELY rocky. Is there any kind of plant that does well in rocky soil (that deer will like to eat too!), that will get light about 50-70% of the day? Just for an example I know ferns grow extremely well in this area. I also wont have too much time to take care of the plot either, as I live over 100 miles from where the plot will be. I usually get up there 2 weekends a month. Any help is appreciated. Thanks everyone!

G-Man
clover, turnips, brassicas are a good choice, just make sure to kill off those ferns (may take several applications of round-up or genatic vegitation killer. they keep your forest from regenerating as well... erussell
Winter rye, winter rye, winter rye!!!! And brassicas. I have a few plots on the mountain and its very rocky. Both do well, just make sure you spray and lime and fertilize.
cwhite
Right on with erussel. Winter rye. I plant it every year. Just broadcast it. Grows just about anywhere, including the grease on the back of the tractor.
erussell
Mountains deer arent as prissy as their farmdwelling cousins and will eat anything that they can get their teeth on. Just plant the rye thick and make it a good size plot because once they find it they will mow it till its gone.
