Deerthug
Does one need a special tag to hunt/kill bobcat in NY or is a supersportsman sufficient? I know there are no bag limits from what I read on DEC website.

biggamefish
I was reading the regs and I think to shoot them as a preditor hunt you have to have a small game licence. But I think you have to have the pelt sealed.
biggamefish
Remember too, no question is a stupid one except the one ou didn't ask and then get in trouble for. Plus I thought that is what this forun is for right?
BrianNY
Just make sure you are carrying a furbear possesion tag if you plan on taking one. Its nothing you need to buy, just something you can print out off the DEC site, or cut out from the regs book. You need to fill it out after taking a bobcat. You'll also need to call a DEC officer from your county to get the pelt sealed as well.
Stretcher Guy
Which DEC office do you call, the one you live in or the one you took the bobcat in? (guessing the one the bobcat is in) And what does it mean to have the pelt sealed?
bubba
they put a tag on it.
BrianNY
It literally means that they will put a seal on the pelt. I belive it's a little orange or yellow plastic tamper-proof seal, unless they change the color from year to year. Info on getting a bobcat pelt sealed can be found here- http://www.dec.ny.go.../9209.html#Pelt You dont have to get it sealed immediatly, so, you would call a DEC officer in the county you live in. You could also call your regional wildlife office. Edited September 16, 2012 by BrianNY
wdswtr
When I had to have my fisher pelts sealed every year from trapping I had to meet them at a rest stop on 81. At the time and might still be the same the officer that did the sealing was out of cortland. It could have changed or maybe there are a select few that cover different parts of the state. They also recomeded the pelt be already off the animal. Not necessary but that is how this guy prefered to handle the sealing. Was the same when beaver pelts had to be sealed as well. I do believe that sealing has to be done before they transfer hands. example, taxidermist or fur buyer.
BrianNY
It has to be sleaed eithe before it changes hands, or I believe withing 10 days of the end of the open season for the furbear. Where you get the pelt sealed (location wise) I'm sure it differs depending on where you live, and where the officer currently travels. For example, when my Uncle got a bobcat a couple years ago, officer James Davey of putnam went to his house.
