FMJ ammo?

I'm just curious, is it legal to hunt in NY with FMJ ammo?  I know it's not the ideal choice but in a pinch would it be legal?

Yes, I am pretty sure it is. There is no mention of FMJ ammo in the regs, at least as far as I can find.

Yeah I didn't see anything either but I've heard that it's illegal in other states so I wanted to make sure.  That's the last thing I need is a game violation.

I hear ya. You might call the local DEC office and just run the question by them and see what they say. Id be interested in hearing that answer as well.

Most states that I have hunted in specify that only expanding bullets be used on big game , but I am not sure about NY...I'll be interested in what you learn...

Many states allow the use of FMJ for varmints, furbearers and such....

FMJ ammo is legal to use, but even in a pinch, not a good hunting bullet.  You will wind up wounding more deer than you kill.  Shooting fur bearers with them may produce less pelt damage, but you will have to track some of the coyotes you hit.

Perhaps ultramag is not aware that FMJ bullets and solids are used for hunting dangerous game in Africa on a routine basis.  They are sometimes used for Brown Bear in Alaska too.  So they are used as hunting rounds.  I guess the story continues.....

Ive seen quite a few predator hunters use them because they do less damage to the furs.

I have hunted coyotes with hounds for years, and killed many coyotes.  FMJ poke a nice hole. however plan on the going a long long ways.  If it is coyotes you are after, my suggestion may sound odd but it works.  Go with a super light balistic tip or v- max and shoot center mass.  If you stay off the shoulder the bullet will enter and do its damage and never exit.  The exit woulds or the fur killers.  And if you are after fox or cats, Good luck they are suck light skinned anything will rip and tear.

I havn't seen anything where it says they aren't legal . I don't use them due to the high possibility of a ricochet .
