Boar sighting in region 6??

I over heard a guy I work with say that while he was hunting in region 6, he heard what he though to be a wild boar? I sometimes hunt region 6 and myself have never heard or seen anything close to a boar.I found it interesting myself to say the least. I might go and set up a trail camera in hopes of getting a picture.

Has anyone heard of any wild boar running around in region 6. I have heard of one being in Utica.

Just wondering if anyone thought there could be some relevance to the story?

i don;t think it is impossible. They can inhabit any area.i don't know if there is any farms near by that have boar hunts.usually around here thats how they get here. They move in quick when they do but a single boar that far from other groups of them with out being an escapee.I know there is groups of them in PA but only single sightings in cortland county and i think they were escapees.Give it time and they will be destroying acrs of land at a time, costing tons of money in cny.

Well that would lead to my next question I have a few camera's out in the same area he hunts just none near the same place that he "heard it".

If I do confirm that it is a wild boar should I call the DEC I never really called them for anything but not to sure if I should??

What would you do arrow nocker lol??

Well I firgure I will try and confirm it's there myself I surely dont want to go off his word. I'm going to put a camera out this weekend and pull my other ones out see what I got.

And I dont think we can just shoot them around these parts unless DEC gives me some sort of permit to do so.

The hook to it is its on public land and the more I look these things up they seem pretty mean and aggressive. The mate like mice!!

call dec but i think you can cause they are an invasive species. They aren't protected and if you don't shoot it and it mates with a domestic pig and those pigs can inbreed and mate then we are doomed. If i see one it's on the ground. No questions asked. They are very bad to get into your area.

One guy shot one in cortland county a couple yrs ago.450 lbs.It was believed to be an escapee pig from a farm nearby. He shot it then called dec.

I am not telling you to.But i am saying if i see one.It is dead.

He HEARD what he thought was a wild pig....Hmmmm...

Could be.... Might he also have heard a whitetail buck grunting on the trail of a doe ??

Sounds kind of similar... I have heard both..

Not saying that he did NOT hear a pig...There have been some comfirmed cases of feral hogs and escapee game farm hogs here in the state.. I'm just saying that without actual sighting of the critter, I would be somewhat skeptical..

DEC says shoot on sight anytime of day or night with as little as a small game license. I have heard of sightings in lisbon which is in 6A but that is just hear say. there have been definite sightings in Peru ny which is in 5A. DEC confirmed a herd of hogs in an orchard in peru and tried shooting and trapping. the nytimes released an article about the pigs in peru. as much as I don't want to see the destruction they cause I would love to shoot and eat one. google "feral hogs peru ny" it was an interesting article.

Of course you can shoot them if you see them..

They are not native ( or protected) species and there are are no regulations protecting them. Shoot away... Probably you need a hunting license, just as you would to shoot a woodchuck or a red squirrel..

Ok fella's this is the story..

He was in his stand that borders a bunch of high thick brush. He heard something moving around that sounded heavy { By that I mean it was making tons of noise so it would have to be something with some weight }..He looked but couldn't see anything at the time he heard nothing more then the brush moving. So naturally he was paying attention to what he was hearing when he heard the pig make what he called a gargle sound. He said it's very hard to explain so me trying here is even harder. I asked him if it sounded like a buck grunt and he said theres allmost no way.

I went to the stand location today and while I was walking I bumped into some pricker bushes and they had a few peices of black hair on them about 1 n a half inch long, Just a couple of stray hairs not saying that a pig is the only thing that could leave hair behind.

I didn't have enough time to get my camera out of there due to it getting dark fast but I did put one were he "heard" something. I'm really hoping to get a picture of whats running around. I have a huge deer I named the bull and now something else running around the woods. I'll keep everyone posted if I get a lucky pic i'll post it asap i'll be going to get my camera Monday or Tuesday.

I would be more surprised to see a bear than a pig there but anything is possible.

I only mentioned the hair because it may be relevant to what could be running around. I pretty much think it MAY be a pig, fisher. Idk im hoping to get a picture or too it has a bunch of us thinking what it could be.

Off topic your profile picture is sweet that's a wolf right?
