Hunting Location

Recommended Posts

Never takeoff more than a 3rd...I prefer 1/4 when revitalizing an older apple...then prune yearly as needed...only during the winter months when dormant...If you have an area that is "damp"...clovers and chicory work well...Figure out what plants interest you...then "Google" what growing conditions they need and will thrive in or tolerate.

For me ...looking at an aerial map is impossible to judge....wind currents.... easy access...deer movements land features....even a small rise or dip in the land can make a difference....Nice place to work with though..Good Luck

I seem to be against the grain here. I find aerials or aerials with topo overlays extremely easy to pick stands from - ones that I have killed mature bucks out of or especially when going out of state, identifying the spot and then hunting and killing deer from that spot. Predominant wind can be determined by checking online. Topos will also give away currents.

It's really not that hard. Sure, it doesn't provide a complete picture, but I can bet more times than not that I'll ballpark you into the deer.

Virtual scouting has become one of my best tools to success.

Ask Moog how my virtual mapping turns out. He's starting to become very good at it, too, and it is his first hunting season.

From your maps and a big picture thinking, it looks like most your likely year-round bedding or primary bedding areas are just off your property lines. The ag (corn) will be a factor in that bedding, but it really looks like you got one north and one south off the lines. I would need a bird's eye view in Bing to confirm, but pretty sure that is the case.

^^^i think ur right....^^^ BTW the wind almost ALWAYS blows from bottom of map to top or from bottom right to top left...

when i was out checking my trail cam today i drove back a little farther back to the beaver dam(u prob can c it on the map) and walked thru the brush over on the left side of it and jumped two deer so there are some bedding areas on my land i think just not PRIMARY ones

No doubt that phade is good at this. He identified a buck bedding area before we scouted a site saturday and low and behold, we kicked out a nice buck. It was almost comical. I had to go back and look at the map to be sure you couldn't see the antlers on bing. lol
