After taking a friend's son to this spot over the youth weekend, we saw this bird in there but couldn't close the deal that day. He looked like a good bird then. We went back there and after some light calling the bird flew down and was gobbing walking away. I moved up to close the distance and after a short wait he headed back to where he heard the calling. He was a "long beard" measuring 10.75 inches with 1" spurs. One of my best birds yet.

On 5/29 I shot this guy. He was all by himself out in a field in full strut and gobbling. Stalked him and got a 35 yard shot, after moving on him a couple of times to meet up with him where he was close enough. His beard was 10 3/4" and his spurs were 1 inch, similar to the other one I shot. A much heavier bird though - 23 lbs. Also, this bird had a terrible smell associated with it - absolutely rancid. It wasn't due to any previous wounds, I inspected it closely, it was almost like it was something maybe an oil secreted from its body or something. I don't think I am going to eat it though, the smell is atrocious. I actually had to wash everything because of it. Never heard of this before.

Beatiful bird, congrats. Can't imange what the smell is, but might be worth a phone call to DEC..
