Pav2704
I was talking to the guy at my local agway and he suggested to wait and plant buckwheat the end of July. He said by planting then, it won't go to seed to earlier and the deer would be feeding in it during the season. Any thoughts?
landtracdeerhunter
Use to grow buckwheat for pancake flour. Planted it from June 10th to July 20th.That way, had half a chance to get some yield from some field. Buckwheat don't like hot weather, blossoms will blast and not set seed. They call it the poor mans crop, because it never needed fert.. Emits a chemical from the roots to kill weed seed, seedling. Don't know how much deer like it, but turkeys do. growalot
It depends on what he's looking for...because BW has such a fast growth rate and provides so many benefits it can be a double cropper...so he could let it seed out for the turkey... and then mow and incorporate for a good fertilizer then plant braccs/WW...the seeds that were buried will sprout up in the braccs.or just replant it again good weed control ...or just cut scratch the ground up and walk over fall braccs...but like all new things to an area it will take a little time for some deer to get use to a new food source..Great thing about BW is even if they don't hit it well...your not out anything and have gain a lotas far as your soil goes I plant beans after it because the seed residue will grow faster than the beans and the deer hit the taller stuff...giving the beans a better growth rate...
