Got to my spot opening day to see two flashlights in the distance setting up where I had planned to be. lol. Ended up on my plan B but didn't see anything.

 

Sunday saw two does 75 yards behind me moving fast about 30 min before sun down.

 

Still alot of hikers throughout the day. worst part is all the dogs off leash (not allowed) had boston terrier run under my stand.

 

Sorry, forgot to add, Fahnestock State Park.

How is the hunting in Putnam county? I was looking to deer hunt that county this year and see that Kent Hills and Caramel has available land. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Yeh, I could imagine the close proximity to the city would attract a lot of hunters.

To be fair, if you can get permission on private land Putnam is really nice. I still go to the multiple use areas as well but I stay away from them on opening day (weekend) of any season. It's just scary out there with the crowd.

I'd really love to pick up some acreage where I could just go out and do my thing quietly, without all of the craziness of Public Land, but I'm not sure that's ever going to happen.

You guy's should look into the NYC DEP Lands in Putnam Co.total of about 17k acres even has a section under antler restriction,go to their web site and read how to get a permit,

 

also small game hunting is allowed,good for fishing,rules are not so bad.you can also hunt west of the hudson,some areas allow rifle hunting

Yeh, I did check them (DEC land) out. Question about DEC land though. Where do you park? Do they unlock the gates and you can park on the property, or do you park outside the gate along the road?

Depends on which park.  Each park seems to have their own rules.  If I'm visiting a new park for the first time, I always drive to the main entrance and read the rules on the board.

there are places you can pull into so you can get your car or truck of the road,check the maps,I think they still have them on line

During bow season...I feel the hunting is great. Yet come gun season, its BOOM,BOOM,BOOM...alot of NYC hunters. Still opening day and the first week is a great opportunity on the DEP Lands. Good Luck. Check out the area off of lockwood lane.

I thought there was no permit required to hunt all DEP land ?

Anyone have rut activity yet in 3N? Saw 3 small bucks following a trail with the nose to the ground this am...

I walked NYC DEP and NYS land today in Putnam and found it especially quiet. The only thing I ran across was a hunter from CT. Said he was turkey hunting, but didn't have a bag tag on from what I could see when he walked away.

No tag, no permit, call the dec.

He was from CT no less, he had the NYC DEP parking sticker displayed in his window, but that was all I saw.

I have 2 really great spots in Putnam produce great bucks every opening day last year got a nice 8 that I had mounted and in another spot seen a 6 with extremely large diameter antlers and a 7 yesterday chasing 3 doe

My friend saw a 7 pt chasing 3 doe this past Sunday mid day in Putnam. That's all I know as if now

I may hunt state land in Putnam this year. I am told, get there early. What is the definition of early? 30 minutes before sunrise, 60 minutes before sunrise?

60 minutes before sunrise, most cars are empty and everyone is jockeying for spots. I have been to some parts of Putnam at least so hours prior to legal light, and I have not been first! Scout deep but even then you still will not be alone in some areas!
