Can I night hunt on the DEP property?

I've got the next week off, I want to get as much time in the woods as possible. I'd love to jump on to some DEP land to do some nigh time coyote calling. Anyone know of any legal issues with this?

I've done it before on DEP land in Putnam County for yotes/fox. I usually leave a note on my dashboard saying that I am in there hunting at night for furbearers so that they don't come in looking for me thinking I'm lost or hurt. Remember only coyotes are open right now.

Keep in mind that you may NOT use a centerfire rifle so long as there is a deer season in progress (including bow, muzzleloader and gun season).  Shotgun with "shot" is ok.  Check this out on the DEC website to ensure I have it exactly correct, but I am pretty sure it's as I stated.

 

And like Biz said, leave a note in your car window to avoid unneccessary trouble, although you can't guarantee that someone isn't going to call the police if they hear a shot at night.

By the way, what property are you planning to hunt?  I haven't tried predator hunting in a few years. I want to give it a shot again this winter

DEP property may have regulations that are different than what the DEC specifies for state and private land.

Thanks guys, I'd be using a shotgun at night, no rifle. We hunt in Prattsville, NY and there is  plenty of DEP land near our property. I've got a pretty nice rig setup w/ the Wicked Lights predator light on the barrel of my shotgun.

Went several times.  Not on DEP land though.  It's fun.  Always went in a 2 man team though so we can shine multiple areas/direction.

Read an article awhile back that made sense, a night time coyote hunter would contact the DEC / Local Law Enforcement agencies to let them know where / when he would be hunting should any concerned citizens call in.  He stated once he started doing that, he never had an issue.

That's advisable practice, but not a requirement. Some guys even put a note on their vehicle. I personally have never been bothered by law enforcement and I night hunt for yotes from October to March.

not true I called the dec last year and they said you can use rifle in a shotgun zone I called about 9a which is wny

I'm not so sure about that. It's possible for one specific zone they may make an exception but generally speaking, " Archery only and Shotgun only zones" are exactly as described...... ARCHERY AND SHOTGUN ONLY.... but always consult the DEC book and an officer to be safe..... and be sure of your target and what's behind it in those areas as well.... they are generally tight and close to houses or other private land hence, the initial use of archery / shotgun

The DEP may have different regulations for certain areas, but shotgun only usually gets thrown out the window after deer season.
