Culvercreek hunt club
Says the guy who has had tag soup... even in the last 7 years. Where you are, you had doe tags and had tag soup?
WesternNY
Wayne yes. Good hunting? Depends where you are. I do know certain parts of the state dont have deer numbers like other parts. Thats where not getting doe tags and add on AR's kinda puts some hunters in a bind. I agree with you Tee and most of the other comments... but my point is it is not the end of the world if (and I doubt it will) pass for a 3 pt AR. But some people are acting like it is the end of the world.
TeeBugg
Maybe not the end of the world for certain areas. Agreed. But some areas will obviously take a huge hit.
WesternNY
Where you are, you had doe tags and had tag soup? Yes in 2010. My choice however... I was hunting a true 150 inch on my farm and let many many nice 100 inch and one 120 inch buck walk that year. Even this year, yes I have seen 9 bucks, but I am not going to shoot a 1.5 year old, and not a 2.5 But the doe patrol has been slow. Today finally after 14 hunts I was able to see a doe in range, draw on her, but I second guessed my yardage, hesitated a second and she was out of the lane. The point is IF it passes it is not the end of hunting as we all know it and enjoy it. That is all I am trying to voice. WesternNY
In your opinion. Pretty difficult to know another's perspective Also for the record PA hunters voiced the same concern as some of you.... their total harvest numbers have stayed pretty much the same pre and post AR.... and according to most PA hunters.. they are seeing better bucks than ever before. You all know I am anti- Mandated AR and pro voluntary and education.... but I can't take all of the drama over a slight chance at them passing a 3 pt min. Good god man. burmjohn
I got to laugh at you guys who do feel if AR's were to pass it is dooms day, and if you don't get a doe tag even worse. If it is 3 points a side.... do you really think you are going to eat tag soup every year? The first year or 2 would be the toughest.... I agree. But the sky isn't going to fall. Stop the panic. It has zero effect after a year or two based on the historical buck harvest per square mile. Unless you think that getting a bigger buck with some more meat on it is a negative. bluecoupe
Other than making it easier for guys to be able to more easily get a big rack, can someone please succinctly and unemotionally list the benefits of ARs to the deer herd, which is what this whole thing should be about. I don't give a rats a** if it's easier for anyone to do anything or not. How does the herd benefit? Culvercreek hunt club
I don't think I ever said I didn't have doe tags that year. So not really the same situation the guys in some of the areas face. If a guy is only a gun hunter in a low probability area for doe tags, and has access to areas without the type of buck populations we enjoy, he may as well save his money on the licenses for a few years if this goes through. I do have to disagree with you on your view of not needing to get fired up over this. THIS IS the time to get fired up over it and get as many as possible fired up over it to voice their opposition. Better now than waiting until the train is already moving. There are too many pushing in this direction and some of those are in organized branches.
steve863
You all know I am anti- Mandated AR and pro voluntary and education.... Can someone please direct me to where I can find the smiley face holding up the BS flag for the above statement?? If you were so anti-mandated AR's you wouldn't have such an issue with people killing bucks less than 3 points to a side. In the scheme of things, it don't make one bit of difference what size the antlers happen to be on a buck when it gets gunned down by a hunter. The only people worried about it are those who want BIGGER antlers on the ones they gun down.

bluecoupe
So it comes down to people wanting to be able to shoot bigger horned animals easier. And I should support that... why?

Steve I don't think it is going help make it more easy to get a big rack. It will lessen the buck harvest from 54% yearlings a bit and give the 1.5 year olds a chance at seeing 2.5 AR is not going mean a huge jump in Inches taken every year.... but it will help with the number one thing that is needed and that is AGE. Currently around 60,000 of the 120,000 bucks taken each year are 1.

I know that for a fact and he has gone a long way down the road to bring the effort for voluntary AR's through education.

DROpTINE
The state record gun typical and gun non typical were both taken in 1939..... There were some huge deer taken in NYS throughout history, way before anyone knew what an AR was. The deer still grew back then, obviously, but with no AR's. They have always existed...but we want more of them now so we are trying methods to having huge bucks everywhere and anywhere. Don't get me wrong, I love hunting and love the thought of a huge buck coming my way. I guess I just think AR's are not necessarily needed to experience that. For the record, this is coming from a hunter that has not cracked 100" on a buck yet. Still trying. IN FACT I HAVE advocated for NO mandatory AR's for NY I don't really care what anyone shoots.... I prefer to hunt an older animal than a 1.5 year old. Have I shot 2.5 year olds... yes, in fact in the past 7 years I have, as well as a 3.5 and 4.5 year old buck. I am simply calling out the panic that IF, IF 3 pt min passes there is no need to panic... when I see the panic it gets me fired up. For those of you GUYS who hunt in "bad areas" and have taken bucks in the past 5 years... list the year and points on one side and lets see how many are really less than 3 pt a side. In regards to the bs flag.... if I was Pro mandated AR, 3 pt is not the way do it, same for PA... there are a lot of bucks at 1.5 that have 3 pt's and that is my point on the points. Just because someone disagrees with the panic doesn't mean there are full of bs.
