growalot
I believe the tops being left is a way to protect new growth seedlings...at least that is what the State forester told us....when we had our place done the loggers knew our son was going to cut the tops for fire wood $$$...he was in his teens at the time...so they "cut down" the tops....in other words limbed them because they stated the most accidents that, they have seen in the woods, are ppl cutting big tops for fire wood... Any hoo....there limbing the tops caused them to disappear very rapidly in our woods...talking ones our son didn't get to...
zoschag08
Why would it suck? That thick undergrowth is much better habitat and will hold more deer and other wildlife? My thought exactly! The thicker the better!
G-Man
dragging tops out does more damage to the woods even if it clearcut, as for money 2-3 bucks a top. they are best left in place to return nutirents to the soil (free fertalizer) and provide seeding from browsing damage.as well as cover for game(rabbits, grouse, turkey, bear) as for growing up to thick to walk thru..i've never seen a deer not be able to go thru brush.. multiflora rose stops me in my tracks but deer nope.... a nice sanctuary for deer to grow up and old in... think of it as trophy management...without mandatory ar's
Culvercreek hunt club
Two timber managers I have dealt with have stated to me their approach is just as mentioned. Leave the tops as a partial barrier to browsing until the seedlings get growing.
